Need Help Upgrading My Home Router

Have a Netcomm modem/router that was provided by Aussie Broadband a number of years back.

Works well to provide internet but seems to have issues connecting my eufy homebase and philips hue bridge. Synology nas seems to connect fine.

Also have an eero mesh that helps with the dead spots we used to have at home.

Think it might be worthwhile just upgrading the router. But after looking around, it's gotten quite confusing.

Is there an OzBargainers favourite for routers? That I can just plug and use without too much tinkering?

Thanks all

  • What NBN do you have?

    • -7

      National Broadband Network®

      ABN 86 136 533 741

I have Tasmanian Narrow Band Network.

  • perhaps just a simple switch between the router and your home network devices?

    Something like this for $19.

They are asking for a router, not a switch.

      • +2

They're suggesting an ethernet connection. The Eero device appears only to have 1 LAN port.

  • Are both hubs ethernet compatible? if so, have you tried ethernet?

    • Ive tried plugging in with ethernet cable but still doesnt work. Bought a new hue bridge as i thought that might be the issue but that also wasnt connecting

  • I use a TPlink x20 mesh - but i've been looking at upgrading to the Eero system.
One of the good things the TPlink does is an IoT network, which only runs on 2.4ghz. This separates all of the smart devices on to their own network. It has made my regular wifi much more stable.
You could try using a guest network and removing the 5Ghz bands and see if that helps the devices connect

    • Thats interesting. Will have to give that a go thanks.

  • I'm guessing you have an NF18 or later router. If so, these are perfectly fine.
How is your eufy homebase and philips hue bridge connected? They should be via ethernet directly into your router.

    • Have tried via ethernet but issue still seems to remain

      • Just buy a mesh wifi 6 device with wired backhaul. Then turn off wifi on your netcomm and use the newer device, should be fine after that.

  • OK, I probably have the same router (NF18) and similar issues when trying to do smart home things. Basically the WiFi went flaky after trying to connect more than ~10 devices. Seems like they never tested it beyond the 2-3 device level.

Anyway, I put on a newer Wifi 6plus router (similar to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/862337 ) to take the WiFi load, acting as just an access point via a wired connection. That did the trick and I can hang 20+ devices off of that, no problem.

Not sure the vintage of your eero mesh, but I'd aim at something with a Wifi 6 or Wifi 7 spec in the access point role, chained off of the NF18, with the wifi devices of course moved across to the newer standard. Seems like its a software/processing issue that the newer devices address.

    • That actually makes sense. The issue has only been recent and i have added quite a few devices on the wifi. Ill try the suggestion from the other comment then look into that kind of router if no luck.

  • I have Netgear WAX206

  • I have the same modem and I used the 2.4 network to connect these devices (Meross wifi garage opener and wifi lights)
Then I connect that Netcomm router to my Asus wifi 6 mesh network and its been great (asus mesh wifi 6 xt8)

  • Ubiquiti ER-X (router) with whatever Unifi AP that suits your circumstances/budget.

    • +1

I'd rather stretch for a UCG-Ultra and a switch over the ER-X. It's a lot more user-friendly than the old EdgeRouter firmware.

      • Good point, I am a bit out of touch so I'm sure there's better integrated alternatives nowadays.

  • You might have a double NAT problem.

    1. What model eero do you have?
    2. Is the eero setup as a router or access point?
    3. Is the eufy Homebase and Philips Hue Bridge plugged into to the NetComm or eero?
    4. Do you have nbn FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, FTTB, HFC or Fixed Wireless? If you are unsure check here.
  • You could consider an Eero Router depending on your Eero model(assuming the mesh only) and compatibility.
