Was looking at budget compact wireless router options for travelling, and noticed a good deal currently on these direct from the manufacturer, with 30-35% off their list price, and a reasonable discount on current prices on Amazon:

Opal (GL-SFT1200) Gigabit Wireless Router | AC1200 | OpenWrt | VPN | IPv6: https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/travel-router/products…

Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) Pocket-sized AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router with 2.5G WAN Port: https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/travel-router/products…

As in @dohv's post about one of the higher end models in the current sale, try coupon code GLFANS5OFF for an extra US$5 discount!

Lastly, make sure 'AU plug' is selected if you want to use it in Australia - or another option if preferred for travel elsewhere.

  • If only it had USB3.

      The Beryl AX does!

      USB Port: 1 x USB 3.0

  • +2

Note that Opal is stuck on a very old version of software (based on OpenWRT 18.06) due to the chipset. Still a good router, but more limited than many of the other versions which are based on a much newer base firmware.

Thank you for the heads-up, @mmrazz

  • Thinking about the beryl AX
My use case is as follows:

I have a 4g hotspot i want to share its internet signal to the Beryl
Then the Beryl run a simple network (wifi and ethernet) to allow cameras to connect to my laptop via FTP
Powering the beryl off USB power bank

Anyone see any holes in the plan?

    • Interested in this too… Felix?

Travel routers, good bit of kit to throw in your travel bag.

Some hotels only let you connect one or two devices to their network - with a travel router you connect to the hotel either via ethernet or in repeater mode and then connect everything else to the travel router.

Less setup hassle - connect the travel router to the hotel and then everything else (assuming it's previously been connected) automatically connects to the travel router.

You have your own private network so safer than using hotel wifi, you can also easily run a VPN or Adblocking.

For extra points, Beryl also does Tor, Tailscale and Zerotier.

      • Nice cheers!

      many use cases really

      for me:
      1. use it with hotel wifi where only the router needed to be connected, and all other devices just connect to router (saving lots of time in login for each phone / tablet, entering wifi pin / guest information)
      2. devices that cannot setup internet via captive portal (eg. google TV , firestick etc.) can just connect directly to the router
      3. when travelling in China, I installed SSR VPN client into the router which allow me to pass through the great firewall
      4. if you want certain devices at home to pass through VPN (eg. your TV netflix to watch US netflix), you can set the VPN profile into the router, then connect your TV to the router.

  • I have the beryl ax as permanent router from a 4g modem at home
the interface and reliability is the best ive used

    • What is your 4G "modem"?

      • its a B818-263 huawei

    • Interested to know which 4G modem do you use ?

      • its a B818-263 huawei

  • Can someone explain practical use of this while traveling?

Is the Glinet app any good or easy for setting up their travel routers?

Play store shows it with a 2.5 star rating.

Asking as my Dad isn't tech savvy… he knows how to pick a hotel wifi network and put in the password but that's it. I'd like to be able to set up one of these travel routers with a VPN to get around the great firewall of china and also keep things more secure for mum and dad. Assuming he can just log into the router settings via the app, pick the relevant wifi network, type in the password and then everything else works, this might be good for him. But yeah, he won't have a laptop with him and it'll have to all be done via phone.

    • Easy setup? - not sure there is a one answer fits all to that question as I think it depends on the hotel wifi.

If your Dad can connect to the hotel internet via ethernet it 'should' be plug and play, if the internet has a captive portal it can be a bit more fiddly sometimes requiring Mac address cloning.

Plenty of setup guides available though if he is good at following instructions:

      https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/3/tutorials/connect_to_a_…

If he doesn't have a laptop and is only using his phone can't you just setup a VPN like Surfshark on his phone?

Point taken on the varying degree of ease.

Yeah, connecting to hotel internet will most likely be via wifi repeater mode. From my time in Chinese hotels (back in last decade mind you), ethernet isn't usually available… and hotel wifi is always hit and miss. Sometimes, they just don't work.

I might get one of these things to play around with myself so I can judge how easy Dad would find it.

        Thanks again for the reply.

EDIT: Regarding setting up the VPN on the phone, I'd prefer not to. New laws in China came into place this financial year allowing customs to scan laptops and phones for anything that may be a threat to their national security. Since unsanctioned VPNs are illegal there, I'd prefer to not put my parents in a position where they may be accused of doing something illegal.

The travel router though… no power without a power source to plug into so unlikely to be scanned.

Though, it might be easier for my Dad to just have more data on his travel esim and hotspot that to mum.

  • Hi please someone guide me which travel router is best for hotels to connect hotel wifi, with high speed connectivity, and plug and play, I mean easy to setup with hotel or with 4g mobile device when travelling with family connecting multiple devices. Thanks in advance

is it worth waiting for the slate to come down in price? the idea of having an SD slot in my router is very appealing to me. Can be my own mini NAS on the go without having a usb protruding out.

  • Ordered. Looks like it might get hit with tax at customs?

  • Hrmm, what do I have to do for free shipping? It shows as $10 for me for the Beryl AX, and the GLFANS5OFF code doesn't apply to that item?

  • Hey all, question if I may, can I use this like an extender for the mesh wifi set up at home?

  • +1

Also, i think the Beryl is now also in sale at Amazon for $115.00 or so.
