[Pre Order] Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 128GB $43.68/M for 24 Months on 100GB/M Student Plan ($39/M for 12M, then $52/M) @ Optus

121

Pre-Order. Ships from 22nd August. Device repayment $43.68/M for 24 months. Optus Choice Plus Student Plan $39 per month for first 12 months, then $52 per month (or as notified).

OK so a few things first: Sorry for the title format as was just trying to get as much info in there as possible and secondly, yes I know its Optus and people seem to hate Optus. Lastly, I know a lot of us can get discount codes, trade in bonuses, student perks etc, but this is moreso a deal for people who prefer to get theirs on a plan vs buying outright and getting a prepaid 12 month sim etc. For those people and those who get plan costs reimbursed by their employer, I felt this was a decent deal if you have a student email you can use to get it :)

Anyway, here's the deal. Optus is doing $800 off the Pixel 9 Pro XL if you take it on the 24 or 36 month plan. I am doing the 24 month option as an example.

Pixel 9 Pro XL 128GB cost over 24 months - $1048.32
Plan cost for first 12 months as $39 deal is only valid for 12 months): $468
Plan cost for months 13 - 24 (taking next cheapest plan at $52 a month): $624

TOTAL: $2140.32 over 24 months

Given the phone cost is $1849, thought $291 on top of that for 24 months of mobile service ($12 per month) wasn't too bad

Again, I know a lot of us can get discounts, codes, bonus credit etc under various deals, but if you're after a plan with the phone being paid for over 24 months instead of upfront, thought it looked OK

Not the best deal IMHO. Better to get it from Jb Deal and take plan separately

    • Depends really. If you factor in the same discount with other retailers (ie not JB but rather the deals like fromHN, the plan itself costs only $800 over 24 months

Which is $400 per year with 100GB per month is kinda decent

Nice deal. Shame its with optus.

    • +1

Why ? Optus is fine for me !

      • +8

cause they don't take their security seriously and you'll likely lose your personal data in the future?

        • +1

Notice how the the other network providers kept quiet at the time though, because they know it could have happened to them.

          • @WatchNerd: This. People are delusional if they don't think all of them have or will leak personal data

        • I think they do - weird thing to say.

A breach is bound to happen- no system is unhackable. You live, you learn, you adapt.

          • +4

@john676: Sure, but they left the door open and didn't notice millions of API calls. That's not unfortunate, that's just bad.

        • Mathematically speaking Chances of that happening at Optus is lot less than other providers, but I guess I know what you mean because I got burnt as well.

        • There’s a whole lot more companies that have joined Optus in data breach , just in case you weren’t aware

      • +8

Terrible reception around my area. Leaked my data with no compensation/ remedy. Hired the Crooked nose crook ex-nsw premier…..whats to like?

        • Ooo didn't know this

        • What Gonzo from the Muppets would look like as a human being.

  • Student discount can only last for 12 month, but the plan is 24 months or 36 months..

    • Can always hop on chat and ask for a discount. I'm paying $29.50 per month for 100gb on optus

      • +2

optus retention is like a car dealership, theres a manager deal then a managers managers deal xD

If you cant afford a phone upfront, should you really be buying the phone?

    • +3

Some people get a monthly allowance for a phone plan as part of their job though.

    • +5

This is ozbargain, what kind of comment is this!

    • +3

an interest free loan essentially, why not?

    • This plan basically becomes a loan for the phone with an extremely low 'premium' for splitting it out over 24 or 36 months vs buying upfront, if you could use the plan.

Keeping nearly $2K in your pocket (or your mortgage offset account) vs putting it on something you could split out makes good financial sense.

The only reason why you want this over the JB Telstra deal is you not paying upfront.

So you rather pay like 2k for the phone than $1100 with the Telstra deal?

        • Which JB deal are you talking about? The $99 plan?

        • The $2140 does include two years of Optus service though, so it isn't just the phone. Didn't you still need the $99 plan for 24 months to get the phone for a decent price?

          • +1

@FabMan: cancal within the first month get the phone for like $1100, I did TRS so another $180 off

            • @SS625: Nice, great work.

Now, over the next 24 months you'll still going to have a contract for the phone right? A $39 contract over 24 months is still $936, so $1100 + $936 is $2036. That is just $100 less than the Optus deal above, but you have to pay $1100 up front and that money could be working for you on an offset account. If you SIM contract is more than $39 a month, the cost difference shoots up.

So the Telstra deal is better if you don't want to go with Optus, but Optus in my home and work area have the better reception, so it makes them default for people like me.

              • +1

@FabMan: Nah you can easily get a prepaid SIM for like $100-200 for 12 months

                • @SS625: Cool, so you'd be using the mobile phone mainly on Wi-Fi as the data on pre-paid would be severely limited at the lower cost pre-paid options, on the higher ones you get closer to having a contract and not paying so much up front. Not a bad idea if the most places you go have Wi-Fi access, such as home and the office.

So it would really depend on data usage outside of Wi-Fi access. Optus Flex Plus has 260GB for a year for $220, say you used just two of them over 2 years, that is $440 for 520GB data. So, $1100 + $440 for $1540, good saving if you do it that way and have the access to Wi-Fi majority of the time.

                  • @FabMan: you use more than 20gb a month ?

                    • @SS625: 6 days on my current one and I've done 30GB already, probably another 7GB to 8GB will be done before the end. So, I'm not sure how that compares on average, might be more or less, but l wouldn't be surprised if 40GB a month is standard for me.

  • whats the cancellation policy on this offer from Optus? Like do i still get the 800 off on the phone cost if i cancel the plan say in the next 1-2 months?

    • just read the terms:

Device discount offer: Available to Consumer and Business customers who sign up or recontract and stay connected to an eligible mobile SIM plan and purchase this device on a 24 or 36 month device payment plan. Discount off RRP and applied over length of payment plan selected and applied from the first invoice for the device payment. The discount will be forfeited if the customer cancels, recontracts or changes to an ineligible plan and the customer will have to pay out the full cost of the device on a pro-rata basis, excluding the device discount Optus was going to cover. N/A with other device discount offers unless specified. Limit 5 device discounts per account. Offer ends 03/09/2024.

      • So it means if we cancel, $800 discount won't apply anymore and we have to pay full price of the phone (around $1800) ?

        • +3

          yupp

  • +1

This would have been great if the plan was to stay at $39 for the full duration. Shame, I would have jump ships again.

    • most likely when you threaten to cancel theyll give you the discount as a loyalty bonus

      • so is the plan month to month or a 12 month contract?

        • +1

after 12 months its month to month, and then their retention can give you a monthly loyalty discount

        • +1

          The plan is m2m.
They literally just apply a discount every month for up to 12 months.
The same for the phone, they split the discount over 24 or 36 months and apply it monthly. If you cancel, you don't get the remaining discount.

  • Anyone know if you can pay the phone off early and then keep that $800 discount?

    • No, you must stay connected for 24 months to receive the discount. Otherwise, there’s no incentive for the provider to give you a discounted phone. $39/m for 100gb is crazy though. I would actually sign up for this if a) I was a student and b) I wanted this phone.

      • Thanks for that. What if I do the 36 month plan. Can I then pay it off after 24?

  • +2

For anyone failing to understand the title of this, total is 82.68per months

    $43.68per month + $39.00per month

I know it's all there but that's not how it reads to me

    • +1

Yeah I originally had that all properly spelled out in the title but a moderator went through and changed it all. I'm guessing in an attempt to be better but is much worse. I tried changing it back but no luck

  • +1

For buying a phone on a plan this does seem like a good deal. Also, I'd be inclined to think that Optus would be more careful nowadays. You'd think they've learnt from that horrible experience and upgraded their security.

  • +1

I ended up grabbing this today in store. I was able to get the same deal and walk out with the phone vs waiting for it to be posted. The optus store I went into only had white and black though, so keep that in mind
