Such a pain for small remaining balance this kind of gift card. :(
yes, although some places allow you to split your bill to use up those small balances, I just always ask a place if they do split, sometimes they can use 2 card payments, or 1 card and cash etc, or sometimes unlimited.
The thing I hate is the places that charge a fee to use a debit/credit card, as that is how this is processed, even though it is a gift card….some restaurants/bars etc charge a % to use the card for payment, so you have to take that into account when paying….say the amount on the card is $50 and your bill is $60, you can't just say to use $50 if there is, say, a .06% fee, you have to work out the fee amount and then take that off the $50 and then tell them to debit that slightly smaller amount of $49.70 and hope that goes through. The other thing I hate is when stored in your wallet, you can't tell which card is which…i.e. one might be for $100 and the other for $50, plus you can't see remaining balance on there either. Have to log into the black hawk site and search the balance, or keep the info somewhere and update it every time you use the card until it is finished. It would be good if you could use these cards to pay for app or online food orders with split payments, that is another annoying thing. $50 card $60 purchase and you can't use the card to pay
Its a prepaid debit card; if it really were a gift card, then it would only work at specific places. So the surcharge is understandable but annoying.
My partner and I use a spreadsheet with all our small balances to keep track. We have so many.
although at Meat & Wine Co, if you have a physical card, they do it as if it is a gift card and waive the % cost
@souths123: Meat & Wine Co have their own dedicated gift card program (outside of generic restaurant gift cards) which is probably why they do this.
@wangasm: ok, good to know, although if it is digital I am not sure if you get get out of it. I just know I did when I had the RC physical card, the manager waived the fee
The way I differentiate/track card balance manually is to use the nickname option in Google Wallet. I put in the remaining balance as the nickname, then update it as I use it.
Though a really dumb thing is that Google doesn't allow numbers in the nickname, so I've had to spell it out (using Asian characters help the character limit haha)
thanks for that, I didn't even know there was a nickname option in there. Just added that description incl balance to this card
Yes it is annoying since most places have a card surcharge. This is not technically a gift card but a restricted prepaid Visa card which is why there is a surcharge.
For reference, the formula to calculate the right amount to "charge" excluding any surcharge is:
($Amount left on RC card) / (Surcharge % + 1)
For example if you had a $50 RC card and the surcharge was 2%. The actual amount to charge will be:
50 / 1.02 = $49.02
no wonder I can never get it right when I take the charge into account, as I only take it as 2% of $50.
@souths123: Yeh the surcharge is calculated on the initial amount charged ($49.02) and not the final amount ($50)
So you tell them to charge $49.02, then 2% of $49.02 is 98 cents (rounded) which is added to the original amount which results in $50 charged to your card
Though there are rare cases where some payment systems will do this surcharge calculation upfront and you don't need to do this, but I've only ever come across this once before.
@wangasm: yeah, I've never seen that, so I have to try to work something out on the spot, which is a bit intimidating when you weren't expecting to have to do it at all. If I know I am going to use one now, I find out if they have a surcharge for this payment type to get ahead of it
@souths123: That's not even mentioning that the card will just flat out not work at some places because they are not using the right merchant codes and you won't be able to know that beforehand (unless they are in the MCC wiki).
@wangasm: so far I haven't had an issue using them. Fingers crossed
@souths123: Especially if you are in the queue at Aldi.
@Yola: lol, you can't use them at Aldi as far as I know. Has to be eateries and bars etc
@souths123: Sorry meant the SB Supermarket cards that can be used at Aldi and suddenly your card gets declined because you did not factor in the surcharge. And 10 angry people in the queue are giving the death stare.
@Yola: Some Aldi stores offer self serve checkout now.
thanks, just got one
