  • Question please.

I have fixed wireless NBN and a single Deco M9 Plus to supply wifi to the house. Will this device be 'better' than what I have? I currently get about 50/10 from the NBN and good coverage through the house.

    • +1

This is technically better; your AC wifi does 867 Mbps and this AX does 1201 Mbps, in theory.

On 50 Mbps internet this will probably be unnoticeable, but if you have many AX-capable devices then it should "work better".

  • +2

i wonder who the oem is and how would one get firmware update?

  • +1

I can't say which one is better, but we have a 30-day guarantee of service, if you are not happy with the device, we will do a full refund for you and organize the return as well.

  • Hi Rep - does this router connects NBN FTTP directly?

    • Except for FTTN, every NBN type requires at least an NBN box in addition to the router. Some, like satellite, require significantly more.

      • yeah i wouldnt use this as the core router

just disable all the wifi on the isp supplied router and use this as an ap

      • There is a NBN box installed already in the garage. So do I just need to plug this router to get the internet?

        • +1

So do I just need to plug this router to get the internet?

That box and a router, like the one in this deal, are all the hardware you'll need to connect to the internet. Assuming, of course, that you already have a PC or laptop or tablet computer or mobile phone to actually USE the internet.

And you'll need an NBN plan. NBN isn't free, you have to pay a subscription to use the NBN. The very cheapest plans start at about $45/month, or a little cheaper if you're a senior.

          • @Russ: Yep mate I got everything just unsure what router to go with as i will be move in the next 2 weeks. Thanks for all the details.
$49 for a wifi 6 router to go with nbn is quite good.

            • +1

@arctan: Also, as your NBN box is in the garage, that's usually not a good spot to place the router, as WiFi signals get slower when they have to go through several walls. It sounds like you're moving into a place that already had NBN installed, so see if the previous occupants had an ethernet cable installed so you can put the router in your living area. The living room is generally the best location to place the router, so the signal only needs to travel through one or two walls to get into all of the rooms where you want to use the internet.

              • +1

@Russ: Yeah I am hoping to get 3 wifi mesh units so I can get full internet for the whole house. I connect the NBN box with the BDI router and then connect the tp link mesh unit by using the ethernet cable in the living room. The other 2 units will be on upstairs separate rooms.

  • +3

I need to unsee this, but the little man on my shoulder is saying get three and see what happens.

    No…..

    Yes…..

    ???

    • the problem will be you are largely stuck with the firmware it comes with

the xiaomi is actually a decent router in hardware but the firmware eats a load of shit

i would not even bother trying to get mesh to work

i'd get this if openwrt actually works but it doesnt look like it does

  • $50 delivered? I yolo'd in. Can't be any worse than my TP Link. Let's see how it goes

  • +1

Does it ping china? if less then 1 an hour im in

  • so they say it was $199 and now it is $49.

    • +2

That's how discounts are advertised, yes.

  • I have bought from them before and highly recommend their after sale service

  • Question, if I connect this to my provider supplied router through LAN, will it be able to transmit my 250mbps internet better?

And can I piggyback of this to get more LAN ports for my devices? Like from the 1 LAN coming from my current router, can I then use this to split that into 4 other LAN devices through this? Or is the one LAN to the current router a bottleneck?

    • if your router lan port is 1gbps and the wireless routers aren't that far away with line of sight or minimum obstruction

  • have 3 of the white xiaomi ones, paid around $60 per unit around 2 years ago

just ran a test, this is with 2 routers separated between 3 walls over about 6 meters

    [ 1] 0.0000-2.0000 sec 107 MBytes 449 Mbits/sec
    [ 1] 2.0000-4.0000 sec 105 MBytes 441 Mbits/sec
    [ 1] 4.0000-6.0000 sec 106 MBytes 445 Mbits/sec
    [ 1] 6.0000-8.0000 sec 98.8 MBytes 414 Mbits/sec
    [ 1] 8.0000-10.0000 sec 104 MBytes 437 Mbits/sec
    [ 1] 0.0000-10.0727 sec 521 MBytes 434 Mbits/sec

they are alright, fast but signal drops off over distance quite quickly, iirc line of sight over same distance sees around 800

i tried to replace them with "D-Link M32 Eagle Pro AI AX3200 Mesh System 3 Pack" but those actually performed worse so i returned them in pristine condition only for JW computers to screw me with an outrageous partial refund of ~70% - fortunately ebay plus fully refunded within the hour

at any rate these look better value and unlike my white ax1800 version these can be flashed with openWRT

  • I have one of this which I use as a router. I find that the streaming on my TV is slow and sometimes dropping off as the Tv is 2 rooms away from the router. My NBN plan is 250/20 Mbps. If I buy one of this and connect the TV via an ethernet cable direct to this, will it help? Thanks.

    • Do you know how to access your router settings?

      • Yes. I do.

  • Can this have stock Openwrt installed on it? If so, it'll be a good option for a lot of people here.

    • +1

Not supported apparently otherwise would have jumped on it

    • +1

the current openwrt Firmware Version is: OpenWrt R24.5.1 / LuCI Master (git-24.141.58422-8db02ef)

we think this version is much stable and powerful, you are freely to install other version, just please do not burn it, as we can not help you with the warranty at that time.

      • So basically your GUI over the top of Openwrt base OS?

AFAIK, one can't flash stock Openwrt without killing the manufacturer's GUI/frontend (which is good and bad, but you're either going to learn how to use stock Openwrt, otherwise don't bother installing it, IMO)

        • So basically your GUI over the top of Openwrt base OS?

??? The firmware version says "LuCI", so isn't LuCI the GUI?

          https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/luci/luci.essentials

          • @Russ: Just like Gli.net routers that use an Openwrt base, but have their frontend over the top.

I have no experience with this company's routers, so I can't say I know, which is why I asked for clarification.

            • @Oofy Doofy: I've read through some of the comments on the OpenWRT page, and it sounds like nobody is interested in putting in the effort to make OpenWRT run on it.

Yes, they've based their firmware on OpenWRT, but it appears the router barely has enough RAM to make it work. If you wanted to run "normal" OpenWRT, you'd have to know a heap of configuration information that the manufacturer doesn't provide, and nobody else has managed to work out. And you'd most likely have to load a cut-down version of OpenWRT due to the low memory available.

Hence why the seller recommends not trying.

              • @Russ: They've got a very recent version of openwrt running behind the scenes, so there's little doubt this device can handle it.

                • @Oofy Doofy: Read the comments yourself. Not the full version of OpenWRT, by the looks of it.

                  • @Russ: They're using it, it's just that they have their own GUI to simplify everything.

If i understand the OP correctly, you can flash the stock version of openwrt and use it, but due to not wanting people to have any issues, they are not recommending people to flash it.

                    • @Oofy Doofy: The OP probably has no idea of OpenWRT compatibility. Who are you going to trust, a salesman, or the OpenWRT forum?

                    • @Oofy Doofy: If you're after an OpenWRT-compatible router, this deal has a faster router, cheaper:
                      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/862337

And OpenWRT say it is compatible.

                      • @Russ: I have several routers. I'm always developing Openwrt backend.

There's lots of defaults I'd change for Openwrt, but there are "nerds", and there are nerds.

      • +1

the current openwrt Firmware Version is: OpenWrt R24.5.1 / LuCI Master (git-24.141.58422-8db02ef)

Pretty clear that this isn't a stock OpenWrt image. I can only find references to this on Chinese sites, possibly an image vaguely based off popular CN OpenWrt forks?

Although given it's a Qualcomm 11ax router of unknown providence, this surprises me not.

I'd avoid purchasing a Qualcomm based 11ax router if you were looking to run OpenWrt anyway.

  • Hi All

For anyone with the device can not save setting, please help to update the firmware before config.

please download the patch file and upload it to your device, then the issue should be resolved.

    • Ohhhhhh, it's a Xiaomi CR660x then.

Explained: These are Mediatek-based AX1800 routers from Xiaomi, but are only available via ISP plans. Basically the Chinese equivalent of of Telstra modems that everyone sells on gumtree, but with even more mediocre specs.

They're decent, but they're also $25 boxed if you're in China. If you like it pre-flashed and don't mind the so-so CPU… Maybe? Just don't depend on enough grunt from the CPU to have QoS shaping working above 200-300mbit.
