      1. These aren't LCD
      2. They are brand new stock, and not refurbished. No damage to the boxes in almost all reported instances or any cosmetic blemishes - see previous posted deals as confirmation. They add "box damaged" to not upset their partners by massively undercutting them.

I agree that box damaged stock is okay to buy, but I disagree with your two points.

        1. These are LED TVs, which are LED back or edge-lit LCDs.
        2. I’d buy regardless of whether these were new box-damaged or refurbished - both come with warranty, and both have been checked by the distributor. I’ve had more luck with refurbs in the past. I assume quality control is better on them because a human looks at them, which isn’t realistic with high volume products.
        • A little ironic that their "quality control", doesnt extend to careful shipping or storage - thats the most likely way boxes are damaged. 🤣

Of course LB's comments about undercutting probably is nearer the truth.

I'd also probably buy one, but Mrs R would have my OzB account banned…… on basis of we dont need another TV and there aint much quality on the box anyway.

          • @RockyRaccoon: You can give the tv free for me

These aren't actually box damaged, it's just the way Sony shift old stock without devaluing their products with deep sales.

        • 'a human looks at them, which isn’t realistic with high volume products'

thank heavens for that - I don't want robots looking at my 'stuff' - know wo' I mean ?

        • +1

LCD is the display panel, LED is the backlight.
          LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
          LED - Light Emitting Diode

      • I’ve read many comments on Whirlpool and OzBargain that people have received damaged units and Sony were a pain to deal with so I’m not sure who started this “undercutting retailers” story.

  • +1

    Here we go again.

    • It's almost like there's Sony reps or fanatics down voting any negative experiences or opinions… 🤦‍♂️

      • +6

I read the reviews and very cautiously bought a box damaged Sony a few years back. Box arrived and the tv was untouched and worked great. Did it again with a box damaged 75 inch and again - TV was untouched and has worked great. I think a lot of people that have gambled on this provider have in the end had a good experience and they generally want to encourage others to give it a go. Sony seem to sell a hell of a lot of TVs so I'm not surprised there have been customers that have had bad experiences just based on the sheer volume of logistics they deal with.

    Fantastic TV. Owner's experience.

  • +1

How does this compare to the TCL range?

    • +1

Way better than TCL, especially if you like watching sport. Cartoons may look better on a TCL though.

      • +1

This is at least two steps down over a similarly priced C855 TCL

        • For cartoons perhaps.

        • +5

Specs wise yes but the Sony premium there's a reason for it. Their algorithm with full array and their upscaling is unrivalled.

          • +2

@Allaa1980: 90 Zones vs over 1000+ on the TCL, no algorithm is making up that deficit

            • +1

@cille745: You can have as many zones as you want but if the algorithm doesn’t know what to do with them, it’ll be a blooming mess. I would rather take 90 in this case.

          • @Allaa1980: Considering This is Too much perceptive.

        • For the price, LG C2 is probably a better choice than the QM8?

          • +1

@ahappysloth: Unless you live in North America, we don’t have the QM8 in Australia.

      • +1

        Way better than TCL

The fact that you didn't even use a model comparison shows you are talking out of your hat.
The TCL C855 is MiniLED and gives a much better picture than the Sony X90. Just go look at them side by side in a store it is quite obvious.
The Sony X95 is MiniLED and a better TV but it cost twice as much as the TCL.

So in this price range, TCL is a better TV.

        • +3

Every TCL is horrible for sport (and motion), therefore no need to refer to a specific model.

          • +2

@eccaz: Agree. TCL and Hisense are the worse brands to own for motion handling.

            • +1

@1r4n14n: Hisense can't even do BFI, pretty much bottom tier for motion.

          • @eccaz:

therefore no need to refer to a specific model.

            Have some more cope…

    • +1

I'd agree a TCL C855 is significantly better. X90L is FALD which is old technology. Here are reviews, including from rtings.com, which is one of the most trusted sources of reviews for TVs. Even with objective reviews, you will still get comments saying how much worse the TCL C855 is though:

      vs

      QM8 2024 is America's version of TCL C855
      - https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/qm8-qm851g-qled

      vs

      • +2

I had a tcl and returned it for the Sony because my priorities were sports and colour accuracy. Colour on a the TCL wasn’t my taste and sports was jittery. Brightness and vividness on the tcl blows the Sony FALD out of the water.

        • +3

Finally somebody speaking some sense and looking beyond TCL’s supposed numbers on paper.

          • +2

@eccaz: I know right? It's so funny how people look at one or two numbers and think it makes a TV. Particularly something like dimming zones.

There were TVs before local dimming and some were good and some were crap, and likewise after local dimming became a thing there are crap TVs and good TVs.

Not jumping on the TCL are crap or Sony are good bandwagon, just saying highly specced TVs can still be a very poor overall experience depending on your preferences on the content you view.

      • And TCL’s motion handling is worse than a CRT.

        • +1

Ummm, CRT has better motion handling than any flat panel. One of the main reasons that BFI exists, is because flat panel tech is so far behind CRT for motion. Place like blur busters anticipate flat panels won't achieve CRT levels of motion until they can do 1000hz.

      • +1

It literally says the following in the RTINGS link…

The TCL QM851G is currently only available in North America; in Europe, TCL released the similar TCL X955. Typically, similar models from other regions perform differently, so these results aren't valid for it.

The QM8 is not the C855.

    • Depends which model. If MiniLED, then that will always look superior to a FALD panel.

  • Aren't the Sony "box damage" products really suss? I swear I have seen reports that they are just repackaged faulty returns

    • It says - "new Never used" I doubt if Sony would risk it's high reputation if this is not true

        • +1

The writer discusses faulty items, they call be present in all new items as well as used items.

Not good in a new item, but can happen. So no direct evidence they were used or even directly claimed they were used. Just that they got the same issue with the replacements, indicating poor quality.

          • @RockyRaccoon: I think you're reaching here. To receive multiple "brand new" TV's with dead pixels would suggest this person is extremely unlucky, or the DOA returns could be recirculated.
Normal fault rate is around 1% and DOA is a lot less

    • -2

Yes they are… I got no damage box but a damage TV… almost like it's been repackage?! And the inconvenience of repackaging the box and TV and then wait for pickup and then wait weeks for your refund! Not worth the savings… imo!

      • +1

I had the same experience with an X90K during Black Friday deals. Unit was DOA and I missed out on getting an alternative. Some have had good experiences but I wouldn't do it again.

      • +1

Imagine getting downvoted for sharing your experience. The Sony fanboys be strong in this one.

  • +6

    Bought in the last deal.
Box had no damage and tv is fantastic.

  • +1

Box damaged or refurb? Refurb a few hundred cheaper for the 75inch

    • The former is unused. The latter is a faulty TV repaired and resold.

  • Thank you, just purchased it. Been waiting for a while :)

  • +2

    85 incher very tempting

  • Damn no ship to Tasmania

    • +15

…because the box may get damaged.

  • Bought one few months ago. Box has unnoticeable dent. Something you would get from normal delivery - tv no issues.

  • +3

Got the 85 inch for $2600 from jb end of last year with a new box haha
    TV has been solid

  • +1

Love my 85 inch. Arrived without an antenna port though. Had broken off. Sony eventually sent a repair guy to fix it. Make sure to take photos.

  • So the new term for refurbished is now being called "Box Damaged”?

  • My refurbished one has been great. Box had clearly been opened but the TV is perfect

  • Is this better than neo qled or oled Samsung tv. Contractor broke our tv

    • No

      • why are people buying it?

        • LED TVs are better than OLED is some conditions, namely brighter rooms and OLEDs are a bit more pricey.

          • @Caped Baldy: That is pretty much not true these days. I think new OLEDs have enough NITS now

  • +1

Bought one… Have always loved my Sony tvs

  • 99% of gamblers quit before they hit it big

  • +1

Caution - Read their negative feedback before purchase.

  • For anyone with a recent TV of this variety, how good/bad is the TV for watching sports with lots of motion?

Is the stuttering/lag sorted these days? Does the OLED offer significantly better sports viewing experience?

    • +1

Its great for sports. Its smooth with great colours. Sony are one of the best for motion processing. It even upscales the definition.

  • Yup have the 85inch and it is great. At this price it would be hard to pass up.

  • 75-inch is OOS and 85-inch is down to 2 available. Was gonna return my good but buggy af 65-inch Hisense U8K and get the 75-inch X90L. Dangit.

  • For anyone hesitant, I bought the box damage 55 for $1300 not long ago off eBay. Was perfect condition, box was perfect.

    Couldn't be happier.

Would love the 75 for my lounge. Picture quality really is excellent. Coming from lg c1 to the x90l was an upgrade in image imo.

    Beat of luck!
