Going to Europe in a few weeks, so I'll grab these cheers

AliExpress has generic versions for about $5 each, you only lose out on precision location but more than good enough for tracking luggage.

    • I thought they were Bluetooth only. Thanks will be checking that out

      • +1

That’s the protocol they use pretty much (same as AirTag) but the Apple find my system is open to third party vendors so they’re legit. Sets up and works just like an AirTag

      • +1

This correct, third party ones don't have the UWB chip, but otherwise work flawlessly within the Apple Find My network. You'll just rely on the sound speaker to locate them instead of the arrow that points to where it is in the room/house.

      Got a link?

    • Second the request for a link. How does this work, do you need a third party app or they just somehow sync with Apple's system?

    • I’ve actually used the cheap ones from AliExpress. I must have got them around Nov/Dec last year and they were all out of battery within 6 months (maybe earlier, I didn’t get a warning they were dead).

They worked mostly well for that period. And $7-10 vs $40 is a big difference! Buuut be ready to change batteries.

I really wish these worked on non-Apple devices.

    • Not a perfect solution but you can use the iCloud website

      • I was just googling, sounds like you need an iphone or ipad to set them up though?

        • You'll also need an iPad or iPhone to be able to ping them.

          • @jmacftw: I thought the whole point was they work of anyone's nearby iDevice? And you can then access via iCloud on any device?

            • @caitsith01: Yes, Airtag works by regularly pinging other iOS based mobile devices.

However, you need an iPhone or iPad to setup the airtags and to also monitor/maintain.

You cannot use the find my device feature via iCloud web browser to ping the airtags as that feature only works on Apple Macbooks, iPhones and iPads that you've trusted. You can't ping via another computer that isn't trusted and isn't Apple. Basically you need to be part of the Apple ecosystem to use them or have a spare iPhone around.

In my case, I had an iPhone and swapped to Pixel 7 to experince Android first hand. I kept the airtags as I still had an iPad. I then lost my keys at work and thought I could just log into any PC at work to my iCloud account to ping the airtags. That didn't work as I could only ping the iPad which was at home. Lucky I did find them without the airtag.

I would have had to go home and bring the iPad to work or guide a colleague to the rough location while pinging it. These are basically useless, unless you have an Apple device.

Having said that, when I did have an iPhone. These airtags were really useful and have helped me locate lost keys on many occasions.

Oh apologies, I hadn’t thought about the set up aspect. You’re right you’d need one of those devices to set it up.

tile is crap in aus unless you don't care about being able to find stuff that isn't near you, and the generic ones are also hit or miss with update frequency. If you have apple devices proper airtags work great.

    • +1

yes, but there are some good uses about tile. I have attached one slim one to my Samsung remote and since its louder (and flat) than tile, it works great for me.

      • Yeah no problem at all with them as long as you don't want to utilise the "network" finding features. The card form factor ones good for wallets etc

    • +1

i drop my keys once in emporium in uniqlo and found them with tile. it doesnt even come close to the airtag's capability but i suspect if you're in a urban area it'll be fine.

When it comes down to what tracker you want, you have to consider the market share between iOS and Android devices in the country you intend to use the trackers in.
For somewhere like India, Brazil and other developing countries, as well as South Korea, that primarily have and use Android devices, tags compatible with Google’s Find My Device network (such as the Chipolo Point or Pebble for Android) will work better in those countries.
For places like Europe, NA, ANZ and Japan, you’re better off with AirTags, since they primarily use iOS and other Apple devices.
Tile is trash, though, simply because there is increased user friction in requiring to download an app to be part of Tile’s mesh network, while buying an iOS or Android device instantly enrolls you into that respective OS’ mesh network.

  • Is there a way to make them work with Android devices?

    • +3

Strap an iPhone to the back of it.

Warning: Seller won't send to PO Box / Parcel Locker / Parcel Collect.

  • Ended up trying 2 cheap ones from ali express for $10 each delivered. Probably junk but worth it if it works on my next trip

    • +1

My two did eight countries and ten-plus flights getting thrown around and didn’t skip a beat.

  • Would it be sacrilegious to stick this to my Samsung phone? In case I can't find it..

  • Just used these on an overseas trip to keep track of 2x suitcases & 2x backpacks, worked great and gives peace of mind.

  • Grabbed the single pack, cheers OP

  • Just bought. Wish I’d done the math first though. Still cheaper at Kogan with First discount and TCN gift card discount. Dad card is straight 10% off.

  • Exactly what I needed thanks Op.

  • Does anyone store these in the car as a anti-theft?

    • Anti-theft device? Not gonna do a lot to stop someone stealing your car.

You might be able to track its location later. It was identified pretty early that these would be used for stalking etc so if you're travelling in range of the same one for a while then you'll get a warning on your iPhone.

  • I'm getting code expired when checking out.
