Note that the Sydney flights are direct, while others may require connections. Also on some dates, other airlines are cheaper - they'll show in the search when you click through.

“ Vietnam continues to be the hot destination for Aussies, it seems,” I agree, as a pilot flying for VNA, lots of Aussie and Kiwi going between Hà Nội, Đà Nẵng and Sài Gòn. More should come tbh !

Whenever I see Aussie onboard, I’ll exaggerate the “G’day” in my PA or “Kia Ora” if they’re Kiwi. People seem to like it.

      • +16

you can live in australia while being or being able to speak vietnamese

        • -5

Yes but it's unusual to live in Australia and work for a foreign airline. How many Vietnam residing pilots do you know who work for Qantas?

      • +16

        Level of stupid is showing

      • +8

Pilots must speak english. Its the travel standard language.

        • -8

Of course, I never said they didn't. But if you work for a Vietnamese airline you've got to speak Vietnamese.

          • +6

@Mr Bob Dobalina: There's literally nothing about his post that says he doesn't speak Vietnamese. In fact, the way he's spelt Hanoi, Danang and Saigon suggest he does.

          • +5

@Mr Bob Dobalina: Nah plenty of my expat colleagues don't speak Vietnamese and they've been with the airlines for decades. English is enough.

          • +2

            @Mr Bob Dobalina:

            Says who?

            • -5

@1st-Amendment: Says common sense. How are you going to make announcements to the passengers if you can't speak the language?

              • @Mr Bob Dobalina:

How are you going to make announcements to the passengers if you can't speak the language?

Doesn't really matter since international flights are usually a mixed bag of people from everywhere who don;t share a common language. I believe it is requirement of an international pilot licence to only be able to speak English (to ensure everyone can communicate with each other over radio). I may be wrong though. I've travelled extensively and most of the time on international flights, it's in English. Domestic is another story…

                Flight attendants.

      • Perhaps they can speak Vietnamese. Perhaps it’s not a requirement.

        Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

      • I thought the required language was Swahili.

        • +1

          that is for space pilots.

    • +2

For real? From mortgage broker to pilot? Quite a transition…

      • +1

haha mortgage broking was 7 years ago at this point.

        • -2

          Do you do….kaboom?

    cheap pho here i come

    • +9

Can’t believe restaurants here are now charging $17 for a bowl of pho

      • +4

        17 is cheap lol

      • Try $15 for a banh mi without Pate!

      • +8

You should ask yourself why you are willing to pay $23+ more for a bowl of pasta, which has ingredients that costs about the same as a bowl of pho ;-)

        • Pasta is a ripppppp off.

          • +5

@tomleonhart: People happily paying $35 for a pasta and complaining about a $17 bowl of pho…

      • Pho here is better, but not enough to justify the price differential.

        • I cook both but the amout spent on cooking pho like… 3 times

  • Any cheap flights this year?

    • +8

Cheaper booking using a VPN pointed from Vietnam, my wife just found ~$200 each way with vietjet

      • Is it in English on the Vietnamese site?

        • Vietnam site in English

      • +1

        What month and from where

        • +1

yep would be good info, bc ~200 each way is still ~400 return which would be more than the cheapest Sydney return price

        • +1

Sale ends today, travel from now until end of September next year
          from Melbourne
inc food and 23kg cheked luggage

  • What are the best months to travel to Vietnam?

    • +3

Any month you can, Just go North when it gets hot and higher altitude when Humid.

    • January is best for HCMC. It’s dry season and quite pleasant.

  • +2

    Good Morning Viet Nammmmmm !!!

    Welcome to Sai Gon ^^

  • +4

I went to Vietnam last year for the first time and goddamn I had a great time. Tempted to return again!

    • Curious to where you went and what things you did to enjoy it so much? I like Vietnam myself too.

  • -6

I went to Vietnam and had a horrible time.

    Never again.

    • Are you trolling? Seems like an unpopular opinion. Elaborate.

      • +1

It's not for everyone, really depends where you go and especially what you like doing. I've been a few times and enjoy, but im a planner. Those with viet backgrounds or extended family/friends will always be able enjoy more of what it has. Language barrier is much more of a factor and tourism in general is nowhere as well supported as say somewhere like Thailand which anyone can rock up to with zero knowledge or planning and still enjoy.

      • -3

I had a horrible time in my 3 weeks in South Vietnam:
        .
        1. There were officials openly taking bribes at Saigon Airport.

        1. My mobile phone was stolen from my pocket within one hour of arriving in Vietnam.

        2. A bar owner tried to break a bottle of beer over my friend's head.

        3. A Saigon Tourist taxi had a high speed meter.

        4. Prostitutes enter restaurants, sit down at your table and proposition you while you try to eat your meal.

        5. Staff of tourist bus companies laugh at you, if you miss a bus and do not offer alternative arrangements.

        6. There were used syringes in the gutters.

        7. Traffic does not stop at crosswalks.

        8. Motorcyclists ride on foot paths.

        9. Stock at the Ben Thanh Market in Saigon was overpriced.

        10. Drug smugglers openly discuss in English their plans in bars.

        • +7

          I had a horrible time

Sounds like travelling is not for you… most of that stuff sounds like fun to me. I remember the old Bali airport where you could bribe customs to skip the queues.
This is the sort of thing that makes international travel interesting. If that's not your thing, then maybe stick to the Gold Coast.

        • +5

Seems you sent to the most seediest places in the country

        • Sounds like Australia, where did you go?

          • @Headless: Saigon, Vung Tau and Dalat.

From Saigon, I made day trips to the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi Tunnels.

From Vung Tau, I made a motorcycle trip to the Long Tan Cross.

        • +3

I can certainly verify on what you said. As a Vietnamese myself, i find Vietnam is not for everyone, it's more suitable for people who have moderate to high level of street smart. Equiping yourself with life skill to avoid those situations, researching places where locals prefer going, only then you should be able to see a beautiful Vietnam. Otherwise; Japan, China, Korea, Singapore are the safe bet.

    • Curious to know why and what your expectations were.

      • +2

Vietnam was recommended to me by my work colleagues.

After arriving in Vietnam, I realized that their enthusiasm for Vietnam was based on their family living there. their GFs and cheap beer.

I do not have any family in Vietnam. As a married man, I was not interested in a Vietnamese GF. There has to be more to a country than cheap beer.

        • +4

There is more to Vietnam than cheap beer. Sounds like you went to the wrong places judging by your post above. A bit of that, a bit of bad luck, and a bit of a reality check about how the world operates.

How many days for a solo traveller you think it's good for Viet?

    • +6

      180-3650 I’d reckon.

    • +1

You could see the highlights in 2 busy weeks or 3 good paced weeks as solo. No1 to slow you down.

Fly in to Saigon then fly out of Hanoi or vice versa.

If in Hanoi travel north to Ha Long Bay, if in Saigon travel south to the Mekong Delta.

Take the reunification express. Stops include Danang (visit marble mountain and Hoi An), Nhatrang, Hue. Or fly if you want a less authentic experience.

Add 3 more days to visit Dalat.

It’s best to just search online for a tour/itinerary and just copy the bits you like.

    • How old are you and what are you into.
Did Ha Giang, Hanoi and Ha long bay the beginning of the year over 8 days return (tight timing).
Would recommend same trip over 10ish days. If you have 2 weeks then add in Ninh Binh.
Ha Giang was probably the best driving (riding) view of my life. Can self ride (like me, not recommended unless experienced, which I ain’t) or go pillion. There’s hundreds of all inclusive tour providers and is super affordable ($250 USD for 4D3N)
This would be the itinerary of someone in their 20-30s though and defs not family oriented.

Well we do live in Asia and we are the southern part of it. From Sri Lanka to Vietnam, Penang and Malaysia Cambodia, Indonesia's 350 islands and of course Melanesia, Solomon Islands, new Georgia or Indian ocean countries. In all that I would only pass on India and New Guinea for health and sanity reasons.
It a big World and your not in it. Do it before you cannot, I mean that at 70, i'm finally feeling the end of the end.

      • -3

It a big World and your not in it. Do it before you cannot, I mean that at 70, i'm finally feeling the end of the end.

I've visited Japan before but I don't travel to Asia for sex though. Just not that type of person I guess.

        • lol, so where doo you travel for sex?

          • +1

            @Headless: I don’t travel for sex.

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted so hard for calling out Asian fetish 😕

    • +3

Wow, you really went there. At least be fair about it, and include other countries.

      • -1

I sure did. I knew it would be controversial so wanted to see what people would say. By Asian I meant all Asian countries but predominantly East Asia, e.g. Japan, South Korea, China. If someone says they have an Asian fetish they will usually mean they fetishise Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese/Thai women (i.e. black hair, light skin, brown eyes).

I do not condone Asian fetish myself. I'm not sure why I was downvoted so hard either, Australians love going to Asia [for a rub and tug].

  • Anyone have any ideas of cheap prices from around mid December to mid January? Any help is appreciated 👍

    • +1

those are the costliest months to travel tbh

      • Yeah I figured, would love to travel during cheaper months, however going with the missus's parents. Thought I'd ask if something cheaper was out there.

  • +1

Vietair has cheaper flights out of brisbane. Just checked departing next week and its ~$590

  • Holy cow they really get you on the bags

    • +1

Holy cow they really get you on the bags

Who needs bags? If you're going somewhere warm, then a pair of thongs (Archies are highly recommended), a couple of pairs of shorts, 5 pairs of undies and 5 t-shirts will last you indefinitely. They do have washing machines in other countries too…

    • Had to double check this - ohhhhhh - bags meaning luggage.

  • +1

    Any deals to Hanoi please?

  • -2

Vietnam continues to be the hot destination for Aussies

but there's no surf, how does one bring a boggie board?

  • cannot wait to visit Bui Vien Street

  • Nothing like adding $500 for a CBR to SYD leg.. $840 vs $340. What a rort.
