Ergonomic Chair for WFH

Hi all, looking for a good quality ergonomic chair and/or reviews of any chair for someone who WFH or at the desk 8-9hrs daily.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a "bargain", just after something that will help with my back pain!

Thanks!

Herman Miller Aeron/Cosm/Embody; Steelcase Leap/Gesture… work your way down the price ladder from these

IKEA Markus or similar, try them out

    • I have the JÄRVFJÄLLET and find it really hard to sit on, dunno if I have a crap posture or just need more meat in my kaboose though, but it was causing serious butt problems before I bought an extra cushion.

Markus seems to have a lot better reviews, but just a warning on the "or similar" and that it's always a good idea to try before buying (I bought it mid-covid, so that didn't work out well for me).

I found the Markus horrible and not very ergonomic at all. I'd say go mid tier chair, much better

      • Markus used to be touted as a cheap Aeron alternative. All the IKEA office and gaming chairs seem to be wide and flat which may suit some owners but I found none of them felt good to me.

Herman Miller (Embody or Aeron, comes down to personal preference). The outlay is obviously huge, but if you're wfh for these sorts of long hours and have back issues, there's nothing better. I bought an Embody a few years back and haven't looked back, it's the best thing I've ever sat on.

Most capital cities have office furniture stores (Living Edge, badbacks etc) so go do a butt test before you decide. Also can be written off as a tax deduction.

They last too…my Aerons are 20+ years old

        Aerons are also highly repairable

This. It is well worth the investment. Also it is worth talking to your employer. They have an obligation to make sure you are sitting properly even at home. Even if they don’t pay for the entire thing, they might have corporate pricing they can offer or they might just pay for it.

I also second the suggestion of going and sitting in the chairs at a showroom. Find one that is comfy for YOU.

I got an old leather executive chair used on marketplace. American made, heavy, thick leather. Uncomfortable until I bought a footrest to use with it and also a cushion under my ass or my legs would swell up. Looks cool though, looks more grownup than a gaming chair and less wanky than a hermon miller whatever.

Agree, don't want to look too wanky would rather have swollen legs

  • Eames soft pad management chair. Either the low back or the high back - I use the low back and it's great for 8-9 hour sessions.

$9,000 each for the original. Or ~$300 for a replica. We have trhe originals in the office and I have a replica at home and can't tell the difference when sitting in it. Looks the goods in both original and replica form, build quality is about the only difference. I just replaced the replica after 4 years of daily use, which is pretty good for $300.

  • Ergohuman - have been using for 5+ years, 8-10 hours a day, and still as good as new

  • Get a swiss ball.

    Aeron

  • I’ve been sitting on my Buro Metro daily for 9 years and still going strong, I’d recommend it but can only compare against shitty office chairs

  • Another vote for the Marcus, mine is still going well after three or so years.

Importantly I went through a whole heap of Officeworks type chairs and they all started squeaking after a short time. Drove me crazy. Not issues with the Marcus.

When testing any chairs, if you notice the slightest squeak, move on
