Re-posting what I said in Feb:

    Get it!

I had a 1kg in the kitchen that I used when the fat on a badly maintained bbq went up. Replaced it.

Saw a CFA fire presso at work before a quick practical with extinguishers in the back car park. Went straight to Bunnings and got a 2.5kg.

Car on fire pulled up near home, right under some pine trees. 2.5kg subdued it for a few minutes but not enough. The flames were about to touch the trees when MFB pulled up. Likely would have lost the house if the trees caught.

Now I have a 1kg in the kitchen, 2.5kg near main bedroom and 4.5kg around middle of the house.

We give them a shake on the regular and gentle taps when upside down with rubber mallet.

Ooo tell me more about this bit

We give them a shake on the regular and gentle taps when upside down with rubber mallet.

      How often? What's it for?

      • +5

Once a year should be fine. The powder can settle and clump. Usually you can hear when things are OK by putting it on your shoulder and rocking it back and forth like a see-saw. You'll hear the powder gently sliding past. If you hear nothing or a thump as the clumped powder hits the ends, then replace the extinguisher.

this type of extinguisher is not suitable for oil/fat fires (class F)

      • -1

This extinguisher is rated to extinguish paper, wood, cloth, rubber and many plastics, as well as flammable liquids and are suitable for electrical fires.

        Very first review of product:

        Oil fire
Accidentally set a pot of oil on fire, took the pot outside before it got bad, flames touching the roof of the house. got the extinguisher and a quick squeeze and the >fire was out. Would have burnt my house down if I didn't have one. 100% every house should have one

Not sure what you are talking about.

        • +1

a flammable liquid fire (class B) is not the same as an oil or fat fire (class F). this one would be an ABE extinguisher (suitable for class A, B & E fires) and has limited effectiveness against oil fires. if you want to play it safe you still need something else like a fire blanket for an oil fire

          https://eadn-wc05-3713054.nxedge.io/cdn/pub/media/wysiwyg/ty…

as for the review, they got lucky. but you shouldn't rely on it for that purpose

Hang on, no one (else) mentioned the car which pulled up - on fire - and parked under trees next to this guy's house? Was it an angy neighbour, or something?

      • Someone who panicked and pulled onto the nature strip of Whitehorse Rd (3 lanes each way, 80km/h), unfortunately under some old, very tall pine type trees. There's about six in a row and a tall gum as well.

We heard a big bang as something popped under the bonnet, neighbor and I both ran out as we though it was the other who had a problem. Peaked over the fence and the car was right there. Ran in to get the fire extinguisher. Quick spray underneath to stop the grass burning then try to squeeze it under the hood and emptied. Those things don't last long hence why I keep buying bigger and bigger. Will be a 9kg soon if we have another similar experience.

Cops rocked up to block traffic and firies turned up 1.30min from when I started blastin, roughly. They only a km or so away. Firies used a loooong crowbar to pop the bonnet and then turned on their little garden house. Over very quickly after that.

        • A friend of mine had their car go on fire and through sheer luck a fire extinguisher service van was passing. The fire extinguisher guy emptied every extinguisher in the van before the fire was out. In general, the little extinguishers that many people carry in their vehicles are not going to be able to cope with most vehicle fires. That's why the recommendation with vehicle fires is just to get a safe distance away and stay away.

      Just to add to this

      • Inspect the safety pull pin is free from damage (common issue)
      • Check the pressure gauge is with the green
      • Flip and give the cylinder a tap with a mallet
      • Listen and feel the powder move, if it's not free flowing you could have a powder cake inside
      • Check for damage to the cylinder
      • AS1851 requires hydrostatic testing every five years and six monthly servicing for extinguishers. Reach out to local fire protection companies if this is something you need for insurances

      Not everyone cant cook.
Would you like to hand in your man card now or have it taken publicly?

  • +1

    What's the regular price?

    • $33.70 according to PriceHipster.

    • What's the regular price?

it's aldi price at the moment, then back to bunnings price …

Got one. The mrs' candles have me freaked out recently.

    • +18

I gave my old mrs' 3 strikes at trying to burn the house down. After the 3rd try she became an ex.

My risk assessment table said removing the risk is better than using control measures.

      Much cheaper option too.

      • Consequences are certainly high but just trying to figure out the likelihood at the moment.

      • +15

So instead of burning the house down, she just took it.

      • And how many times did she try to burn the house down AFTER becoming your ex?

        • +1

          She is at peace now.

  • -5

Aren't fire extinguishers meant to be expensive?

  • What happens when they expires? Possible to refill?

    • +2

At this price you just throw them away and get a new one.

    • +8

      Practice using them

      • +5

But only somewhere that you want to end up looking like a winter wonderland.

    • +2

stand in the middle of a big room in your house, pull the pin and squeeze the trigger to test it is still working …

    • +3

It's recommended to empty them on chuggers.

      • +1

        What is a chugger?

        • +2

Charity mugger. Those who try to stop you on the street to sign you up for regular contributions to some charity that only gets a small fraction of the donation after the fees from the chuggers' agency.

    • Invite some thieves to your house and practice with it, or use it to scare pets away from your backyard to prevent them from dumping poo poo

  • -5

    Great for EV drivers. 🍿

    • +1

apparently the fire service just lets them burn out because they are so hard to put out. upside is you save on the forking out for the cost of a cremation

    • +6

Because nobody said anything negative about internal combustion engines when horses were perfectly fine

    • +4

Your standard ICE vehicle has a greater chance of catching fire, you should trade your popcorn for kernels so you're ready.

    • +1

E-bikes are banned on the train in some countries for this reason.

  • +1

hey Q how do we dispose of these once they are expired?

  • Is ok to keep them in garage or they can blast in summer heat?

    • +7

Imagine a fire extinguisher starting the fire instead! 😀

    • Temperatures both ways can affect pressure on the cylinder. Just keep an eye on the gauge for any drops.

You want it within the green.

  • good price

  • +3

Good price. I got mine a while back from ozbargain and used it recently to put out a neighbours balcony fire that went wild after it somehow caught onto the grease tray. Remember to keep those BBQs clean.

    • Oh.. thanks for the reminder

    Showing $29.97 for me…

  • 29.97 for me too…

Waste of money, you never need these things.

    • -1

      That's what she said.

    • +1

      …. Until you need it

    • +1

Same with seatbelts and insurance right?

    • +1

Don’t tease karma, it will bite in the bum

  • Mine came today and is looking lower than I thought it should.

Is his worth taking it back for a new one?
    https://imgur.com/a/5MtOy8u

    • +1

I'd take that back, both of mine arrived above the 1500 mark but still within the green.

      • Will do

    • +1

of course, it has lost pressure sitting on the shelf

      • Thanks. Will do
