Solar Panel Upfront Cost- before Any Work

Hi ozbargain,
I contacted the solar company and they quoted me. I pay them deposit $200. We agreed. Now they are asking me for the upfront of the remaining amount before any work. Is this ok?

    no

  • Nup. Paid a $250 deposit for mine, only paid the balance once installed.

  • Nope. Don't scam yourself lol. My system was ~$4000 and I paid 10%. And I think that was still too risky. Thankfully everything turned out well.

    Name and shame needed.

  • no way.

I paid 10% on $5200. Balance paid after installation AND proof they submitted the paperwork to the energy distributor.

Your contract should clearly state the payment terms. You did read the contract prior to signing, didn't you?

  • I discussed that i pay later after the installation then he said all the other providers charges upfront. Furthermore it says Your PV system is not eligible for Feed-in-Tariff, If inverter output exceeds 5kw.

BS, ask for your $200 back and move on. Let's see whether they refund you the deposit.

    • Honestly sounds like a scam artist. Given your in Sydney, ask for a refund or cop the L. PM me for my solar guy, he's done 4 houses now across myself, parents and friends. Last job was a a 6.6kw for $2,900 (all Tier 1 brands) and he'll hook you up. Friendly guy and gives insightful ideas (would push you to get E-W panels if he doesn't say)

i got a $20k system and didn't pay a cent until it was installed (even i thought this was odd).

    • 20k for a solar system is a bit odd…is it off the grid?

      • very big system.

        • What's the payback on that

        • What's the payback on that

  • No. (Are they based in Nigeria?)

    (No). lol

Tell them that when you paid the remaining balance that you accidentally overpaid. Show them a Photoshopped receipt and ask them to pay the overpaid amount back
    /$

  • If your quote says pay upfront you really needed to challenge that in writing before paying a deposit.
Tell them you won’t be paying until works completed and if they can’t do that you want your deposit back.
If they won’t do the job before full payment then I’d say they are short on cash.
Worse case scenario is you walk away $200 out of pocket which is no big deal in the scope of things (provided you haven’t paid in full yet).
