Iono set also on special for $49

    • Going quick, my local Target ran out. Had to order one for delivery

  • I’m curious, do you prefer 4 Elite Trainer Boxes for 4*59 = 236 at target, or a booster box for 179 at Amazon?
    Both contain 36 packs.
I usually chuck all the extra stuff like energy cards, coins, dices etc and only keep the sleeves and the special card. Not really worth $57.

    • Booster Box is overall better value for loose packs/opening.

I personally hold no value for the additional bulk in ETB's. At $49 (using the newsletter code), they arent bad.

I keep a few sealed ETB's and Booster Boxes for display purposes though.

I might add… I have had bad luck openning Amazon product. All legit, but no pulls… then again who does…

Amazon is also risky for sealed collections as Boxes are damaged in transit.

I ordered a couple but it appears target is cancelling WA orders as usual…

      • Question is also if you get better pulls overall in 4 ETBs or in 1 booster box
For example, the quality of pulls i get is amazing in Crown Zenith and 151 ETBs, but of course these two sets don’t have booster boxes. Other sets, for example, Chilling Reign and Brilliant Stars have pretty much no good pulls in ETBs in my experience.

Regarding Amazon, for me packs from Amazon US have much better pulls than packs from Amazon UK, even though I did get at least one great pull from Amazon UK.

I don’t think I ever got more than 1 good pull (which to me is a card worth more than USD20) from a single booster box, but it can happen in 4 ETBs.
So 36 packs is not equal to 36 packs in my experience. Some products have much better pulls overall than others. And heavily discounted booster boxes seem to be among the worst.

        • You will find an equal measure of people swearing by each product.

The simple truth is, they're all bad value and all bad rates. You're gambling and what you preference is often personal bias to your pulls.

On an individual level, you're just unlikely going to buy enough product where any of it matters. You can't optimise your rates on a few purchases, this really only matters if you intend to (mostly) guarantee your mapping at the case level or higher (so 6 booster boxes or 10 ETBs in one sealed case). Even then, you're gonna lose money most times.

I wouldn't stress on it, just buy to budget/good sales and products that interest you, like cool promos.

  • Ok, to answer my own question. I just opened a whole booster box. The value of all ex+ cards combined is less than USD 25! I’m sure it can’t be worse with 4 ETBs.

    • Can't say we didn't warn you :D

"The simple truth is, they're all bad value and all bad rates."

      • I received the 4 ETBs from Target. They were not much better overall. Mostly cheap pulls, only one card over $10.
So far I’m disappointed with Twilight Masquerade

    • I havent had very good luck with Twilight Masquerade either. My fav is still Paldea Evolved just because I pulled Magikarp IR in a couple packs lol

Scarlet and Violet is mostly quite underwhelming. It would probably be smarter to just hold sealed products, but I couldn't help cracking open packs.

      • Yes same for me, can’t help opening them. Even though I know it’s stupid. For example, the average value of the cards in an Evolving Skies pack, which now sells for a crazy amount, is only a bit more than USD 3. And that’s by far the most valuable set.
Other sets like Obsidian Flames where all cards together are only worth the price of a booster box are definitely not worth opening, but I still open them when they are part of sets. Stupid I know.

I pulled quite a few of the Special Illustration Charizards in 151 ETBs. @jjsu Wanna trade one of them with your Magikarps?

        • After chasing the Giratina in LO, I found out the hard way that opening packs wasn't worth it…

1 in 768 chance of pulling a specific alt art is crazy. Conservatively $3500 per alt art.

I ended up buying the 'Tina raw for $340, which has increased in value to ~$450+.

I now find it hard to open packs! Turned into a sealed collector and no regeets.

Regarding rates being better in certain products. Its all very much completely random. I've seen someone pulling a moonbreon from a random re-release Tin recently on reddit.

          • @hypie: I envy you, I wish I could have so much self control!

Yes it is random, but there is randomness in what cards are included and randomness in how many ex+ or V+ cards are included. I bought quite a few Crown Zenith ETB boxes from Amazon US via Amazon AU when they were on special for around $60. Pretty much each box had at least 6 or 7 V+ cards. Only in maybe 25% of cases they were worth less than $60.
When I look at some other ETBs like Chilling Reign I have to be lucky if there are 2 V+ cards and super lucky if one of them is worth more than $5.

The other day Target sold these 6 booster packs of Paldea Evolved for $20. Almost all of them contained a few decent cards. More than the booster boxes that were on special at around the same time. The Paldean Fates, Temporal Forces and now Twilight Masquerade ETBs they had on special contain mostly crap. So I think there is a big difference in what’s included depending on the product.
Yes it’s luck and random to get the chase cards, but the amount of decent cards contained in a product is different. And when you get more decent cards it’s of course a higher chance to get a very good card.
