Nice machine. Can steam and pull shots at the same time. Good alternative to BDB.

Can steam and pull shots at the same time.

      Why is that necessary?

Say you're making 4 coffees for people at your house. You can do 2 tasks at a time, meaning the 1 coffee is made in half the time. So you're completing 8 tasks in the 4 task zone.

If it's not a dual boiler then you're likely pulling a shot then waiting for the temp to adjust for the milk frother and then frothing the milk, then waiting for the temp to adjust to pull the next shot and so on.

Not needed if you make 1 coffee of a morning but if you do multiples and have people over it's a nice time saver.

So this model is for women ?

@jv: No, this one doesn't have the vacuum attachment (huehuehe look how funny we are)

          • @jv: No just a replacement …..

        • Really, a thermoblock doesn't take a terribly long time to change temp. If comparing to an actual single boiler machine then yeah, you lose a LOT of time jumping between brewing and steaming temps and making milk coffees for guests is a royal pain in the butt. Even a single thermoblock is faster than that, though the capacity to generate lots of steam may not be as good as a dedicated boiler.

Of course, if you can have dual thermoblocks - why not! Still going to be an improvement in workflow over a single. Not sure if the steam generating thermoblock can do a better job than a dual purpose thermoblock? You'd hope so.

@jv - Are you retired? The time this feature saves is important to me when I’m rushing to get ready for work in the mornings, especially when I make 2 lattes for myself, one to drink before leaving home and one to put in a flask to take to the office to drink later in the day. Multiply that by several people in 1 family using the espresso machine before work and it adds up to a substantial amount of time saved for everyone. And the benefit of this feature is even more valuable to me now that I have added a DF64 gen 2 grinder to my household, because the process of having to weigh the beans before each use is an additional step that slows down the process compared to using the Breville smart grinder pro which I was previously using.

          Are you retired?

As in got tired once, and then got tired again ?

          • @jv: I think that's called a retread.

            • @Banj0: That is if you get 'tyred' again…

Single use $30 off codes for someone. Should work on anything $100 and over.

  • 58mm standard grouphead sizing too, so any additional portafilter-related investments are transferrable to your next upgrade.

My experience with Sunbeam machines is that they are pretty ordinary. Even a cheap De Longhi does significantly better than them. Breville is considerably better still.

    Of course YMMV

    • Ordinary in what way? Delonghi machines are significantly better in what way? The cheaper Delonghi machine I used to have died a premature death…

  • Stretch a bit more to get the BDB. buy once and cry once.

No OPV = 15bar pressure = over extracted coffee.

    • In my experience, as long as you get the grind right, this isn't an issue. The only poor results I've had from my EM7000 is if the grind is too fine or coarse. With a decent grinder like a Breville Smart Grinder Pro making the adjustment is easy.

      • -1

as long as you get the grind right - oh yeah.

        • I don't understand. So you're using an OHV machine with random grinds, and you're happy with that?

        • -1

Not sure why you're getting downvoted to oblivion…. this is right

@Paudius: Probably because instead of explaining the point, he/she made a sarcastic reply. It doesn't help ones argument if they just get angry when it's questioned.

I've had one of these for a number of years, albeit the previous model (button design is slightly different). It gets multiple uses every day and has been rock solid. Would happily pay this amount for it.

Get a BDB instead. They are usually around $900 on discount often and it’s a much superior and longer lasting machine.

I upgraded from EM7000 to BDB and regret not upgrading sooner.

    • As a happy EM7000 owner interested to know what you like most about the BDB in comparison?

Also, why do you say the BDB is a longer lasting machine? Every time there is a BDB bargain posted there seem to be comments that suggest many only get to around 5 years before things start to go wrong or need fixing which is the main thing that puts me off.

      • BDB has a lot more features, it's consistent with shots, has dual boilers instead of thermoblock, got a pressure gauge that's actually useful, has customisable pre-infusion, stronger steam wand, easier to find accessories like bottomless portafilter, stays within the ideal pressure range because of the OPV instead of chocking on finer grinds, plenty of mods that are quite easy to do - I did variable flow mod for a while to play around with shots pulled at 6 bar using very fine grind.

Longer lasting - It's been going strong for about last 4+ years for me, I pull 2 - 4 shots a day. In the 4 years I had EM7000 I had to replace the pump once. I'm not aware of what problems people usually have with BDB but the most common to my knowledge is related to descaling. Almost everyone recommends never to descale BDB as that causes more problems than fix anything. I use filtered water for my BDB and have never descaled my machine.

    • Superior in what way? Did you upgrade because your EM7000 broke?

      • There are no customisation options on EM7000 whatsoever. BDB allows you to control brew temp. Also it's a dual boiler not a thermoblock. Shots are consistent with BDB. Also the OPV on BDB works a lot better in case you grind too fine. It's easier to find bottomless portafilter for BDB if you want one. There are just a lot more features and consistency with BDB.

We have an old one of these a guy gave us when our BDB was in for work. I gotta say it isn't bad at all. Not quite as powerful but you can absolutely knock out a decent coffee with one. It's also incredibly solid!

  • One of the best machine at this price point with a massive flaw.

Makes excellent coffee and steams milk very well.
Major flaw, it has no proper seals. i find tiny roaches and insects getting into the water tank and inside the machine. sometimes i can see them crawling in the temperature gauge. I have cleaned it thoroughly and have put baits around it but because of the warm environment i find so many nesting there. have stopped using this machine because of this.

    • I had ants in the water container once, but never anything else.

  • This or the Delonghi La Specialista Opera (Ec9555)?

    • Avoid a machine with an internal grinder like the Delonghi, they're usually subpar and too coarse with their adjustments. Specialistas also have a number of issues (which are slowly being rectified with newer models) - google their issues with grinding and leaking.

I would consider a Breville dual boiler over the Sunbeam though, if space & budget allows - they're better built, more customisation, have better spare parts availability, better community & aftermarket support, frothing is better on them. Neither machine is especially robust though, so just keep on top of servicing and maintenance.

  • I have a photo on my old iPhone 7 Plus (which isn’t the current phone I use) that was taken in mid 2017 at a JB HiFi store here in Sydney, of the Sunbeam EM7000 which is similar to this model (it was completely silver/stainless steel), and it’s RRP was $799, so $849 RRP for this model isn’t bad 7 years later. I was considering buying the EM7000 on special for $519 at the time (or maybe it was $529, one or the other), which is why I have a photo of it from back then.
