Patagonia Refugio 30L Carry-On Backpack $159.99 Delivered (RRP $199.99) @ Boardstore

450

Found this bag with a further 20 percent off from current sales price on the Boardstore website. Patagonia has this item in ugly colourways for $169. This post is the black variant and other colours available too.

Scanned reddit for reliable branded carry on bag. I have an upcoming trip where I'll be flying with easyjet and this bag seems to have a lot of great reviews. First time posting lol. You may delete this post if it doesn't meet criteria in any way.

  • Showing as $199 for me

    • Sorry friend, i have added the link in my description. Also added the red colourway.

  • Does anyone have this bag? Thoughts? Looking for a quality everyday backpack, so I can stop using the cheap Dell backpacks lol.

Ill let you know once mine arrives! I spent considerable time going through reddit to find a comfy bag that would meet the strict baggage size policies from budget airlines. Found a lot of posts pointing to this bag lol…

I have this! It’s pretty good, Patagonia so I wouldn’t expect less. But I did get it for I think 130 around a year ago from another website. Laptop pocket inside is super handy and detachable too, lots of little places to tie and adjust to your fitting. Also can fit a lot more things than you initially think.

Regardless of the exact details, this will be incomparable to a cheap Dell pack in terms of materials, longevity and the amount of design effort.

I'm super picky with packs, and Patagonia wouldn't be at the top of the list for various minor reasons, but it will kick the living ass out of anything from Dell.

I suspect the cheap Dell packs are just taken off an OEM line from some random Chinese factory. There's not much effort put into the design of them, and just as little effort put into sourcing materials (besides effort to find 'cheapest possible' materials).

I had a cheap Dell pack from an OzB deal which I kept for 3 days then donated to a charity bin. Similarly priced Decathlon packs are better than the cheap Dell packs.

    • Any specific complaints with the Dell?

I have a Dell gaming backpack which I quite liked for office trips.

The basic dell ones are not great, they're just a small step above the "fitness first" backpacks.

The Dell gaming backpack is much better than those basic ones. However, if you were to grab one of the more premium backpacks, like say an Osprey Nebula, NorthFace recon, Timbuktu Authority, AER, Fjallraven etc, you'll find the quality of the materials used to be substantially better. The positioning and organisation of pockets, and inserts will be exceptionally well thought out, as well as the positioning on the straps and how it sits on the back.

My old Osprey nebula (I think I paid $95 at clearance) has been with me for 5+ years and has seen a ton of overseas travel, day trips, hikes, boring work commute, and for the past couple of years - my gym/rough use bag. It's still in excellent shape and literally nothing has worn out (not the stretchy mesh pockets, not the base, not the elastic… nothing!!). Lastly, it has been the most comfortable bag I've ever owned. The funniest thing is, it looks like this bad boy will last a few more years.

So when it came time to get a new backpack for work, it was a no-brainer, grabbed the same model - even though it wasn't on sale and was 2x.

The $70 Dell gaming pack is a lot better- imo still slightly flawed with the way the laptop is not properly protected from the ground, but a lot better than the $15 pack. The Dell gaming pack is worth it's standard pricing.

The $15 Dell pack that keeps appearing on OzB is about as good as the free bags you get with gym membership, and worse than some of the free bags I've seen from conventions.

Cheap fabric, cheap foam in the shoulder straps, and cheap non-YKK zippers. And also a puzzlingly convoluted design that requires the shoulder straps to be moved out of they way in order to open the main compartment. Proponents of this design say that it provides additional security, but this additional security would not be required if the zipper and fabrics were up to scratch in the first place. There are so many reports just on OzB of this pack failing, either with fabric tears or zipper failures.

$15 should be the normal price for this pack, not the deal price. Cheap Decathlon packs are better made and longer lasting.

Yep this store hasgood peice and sometimes bargains

  • Tempted to refresh my 6 year old Osprey nebula 32 with this, however the back breathability and compartments seem inferior.

    • Yep i have 10 osprey comet 30L
But still going strong so i can't replace it

    • Curious, isn't that a better bag? This looks like it has less compartments (and lacks a hip strap).

      • Yeah it is a better bag, it's just that the water bottle pocket elastics have gone and it's been well beaten up as my daily.

    • Same, just checked mine from 2013 - Osprey Porter Travel Duffle, 46-Liter

Maybe not as rugged but still lasts, lightweight and is the perfect size for carry on. Can fit more and it's size lets on, ties down smaller (no good if you have to weigh).
prefer the travel bag style cad open the whole thing. OPs would be good for a day bag and hiking etc.

    • My Osprey Talon 22 started peeling inside, creating a kind of dandruff on all my equipment inside. Took it to Paddy Pallin, they shipped it to Osprey (or one of their repair centres) and said it could not be repaired. I actually looked it up online, I think a lot of bags suffer from this delamination which isn't covered. I think it was due to having wet clothing or travelling to humid climates which is a bummer, I only ever used it occasionally on overseas hikes.

      • All nylon packs rely on an inside waterproof layer. This delaminates over time, worsened by humidity. With a lot of scrubbing with something like steel wool you can get rid of most of it and reapply anothrt waterproof layer.

        • Probably leave it as is and throw on a rain cover if it's pissing out. May look for another daypack that doesn't have this delaminating issue (if there is such a thing).

    • I have the same one (~5ish years ago) and it's still kicking ass. I got the newest Osprey Nebula for work and don't regret it one bit!

A few very good design changes in the front section organisation.

If you get black then no one’s gonna see you have a Patagonia bag.

    • Sounds fine as long as it is a quality bag. For me, it would appeal more with more subtle branding or no branding.

Strange name for a backpack "refugee-oh".

      It's Spanish for refuge.

Strange name for a backpack "refugee-oh".

      <facepalm>

If you have ever been hiking in Patagonia, you have stayed in a refugio. Same way as if you've done the Milford Track you've stayed in a hut, but you didn't hike or bushwalk to the hut, you tramped there. Or if you've travelled cheap through Spain you've stayed at a pension, instead of a B&B.

      Languages. They are a thing.

The piss yellow one was usually $99

  • Is this good for cycle commuting with shirt and work trousers, shoes etc.

    • +1

The size is good and would do the trick but no pics of the back to check it breathes.
Black isn't safe and no reflective bits by the look of it.
For $160 i'd look at cycling brand bags but of course you could use it.

    • +1

I say no based on the harness. Check out some of the Osprey/Deuter bags that sit further off your back.

    • I got one of these 30L in yellow great bag and fits a lot
(original generation, so was almost 2kg by itself but they've made them lighter weight)

Would be money better spent if you are on the bike, IPX5 certified waterproof etc.
