Ads That Made You Less Likely to Buy a Product

I dont watch a whole lot of FTA TV outside of some news and sport.

I also got youtube premium to avoid ads because i dont have time for some billionaire flog trying to sell me tickets to win a raffle i got no chance winning.

However i have noticed in the past few months some ads that have actually made me think this has got me less likely to buy the companies product the big stand outs the Cupra ad is just weird for some reason people a screaming and a few other random wierdos looking around that tell me a hell of a lot of nothing about the car and some annoying Mcdonalds ad about some smart deal all i think is 'this is anything but smart' and the worst of all was an ad about 'tax cuts' which had me thinking why the hell do you need to advertise a tax cut? just put in the cut and save the taxpayer money on the propganda

now i know ads in general are annoying but legitimate ads that make you dislike or hate the product seem to become more and more common. Ill contrast this with the Olympics which ive been watching a fair bit off and i actually like the AAMI ad i thought it was clever and funny.

Regardless what products have you seen advertised and thought im 'less likely' to buy that junk now or have actually made you cringe and think who the hell actually got 'paid' to write this ad?

Is my general hate of ads clouding my objectivity?

Any ad I see I am turned off by whatever product or brand it is. They're all spam in my eyes and so I just associate any marketing with junk.

  • All advertising is made to create an impression - Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Depends on the product or business. They just want it to be memorable.

Sure you might be turned off those products/businesses and not purchase anything again, but look at you go giving a shout out to them and furthering their reach now.

    Result?
    Successful marketing.

    • -2

It is 'only successful' if you results in more sales and positive awareness - the fact people think marketing is just about awareness is a bit of a myth

'Bad' brand PR can kill your product Gillette and Bud Light in recent years - both these companies are still hurting from PR disasters from 'marketing'

      • All ads do the job, its when the ad is repeated and repeated, then it becomes annoying, as well as tag lines.

Eg The one for that buyone get one free, 77 only, with its "great idea" ending.

Or the one with two sisters who tell us its the best mattress, that has been on during the day on multiple channels for years. Like if by now we dont know the words and wont buy the product, and buy from "Mr Harvey" to to spite the female dogs. - Finally they have a new ad but its ingrained in me to say "YES Mr H" even now because I know this is the beginning of a new 3-5 year cycle.

Even more is the poor advertiser's after those ads, as it prompts me to wake up and mute the TV and go for a piss.

And dont get me started on the station promo's which target me with a program, while I am watching an alternative channel while the other is running. If I wanted to watch that program why am I watching the alternative channel?

Then there is the trend ads like KFC dipshit buyers being emulated by Macca's dipshit buyers.

Now to work out how to have Alexa mute the TV when some key word of an ad comes on. Eg "Yes Mr H"

Any one done this and some clues?

      • Bad' brand PR can kill your product Gillette and Bud Light in recent years - both these companies are still hurting from PR disasters from 'marketing'

But unlike your op examples, where you viewed commercials and independently found them 'annoying', 'confusing', or 'pointless'

Those jumping on the 'boycotting bandwagon' of these brands you listed arent doing it because of their own revelations. Advertising aims to manipulates people's behaviour, but so does whatever outrage fuel machine you want to label what's behind those two examples.

        • -1

You got issues OP if you think this post is 'outrage' its just making a point

Advertising is about $ my point is i feel like ads doing the opposite its not rage but an observation but based on your previous posts your one of those overly sensitive touchy types who are offended by almost anything just to be offended so doesnt suprise me you would completely misread the tone

          Have a good life

          • @Trying2SaveABuck: I didn't say your op was outrage.

your one of those overly sensitive touchy types who are offended by almost anything just to be offended

            Oh the ironic hilarity.

      • the fact people think marketing is just about awareness is a bit of a myth

        Source?

Im sure anyone working in marketing will disagree.
Awareness is a huge part of marketing.

Why do you think the phrase “any publicity is good publicity” exists?
Because it works for individuals and businesses.

'Bad' brand PR can kill your product Gillette and Bud Light in recent years - both these companies are still hurting from PR disasters from 'marketing'

They didn’t just have annoying ads, they had poor PR input as you mentioned.
They chose to take highly controversial stances on divisive subjects.

The ads you mentioned do no such thing.

Normal annoying advertising is just annoying enough to maybe get you to complain to a friend and give word-of-mouth advertising through your whinging or to get it stuck in your head.

Hell, I still remember the phone number to businesses that had annoying advertising 25+ years ago. It works.

        • -3

Fair enough im not Whinging but making an observation like the other overly sensitive OP learn to read the tone

Now to your point it is 100% fair enough and i dont disagree with you generally but your orginal point ads are to make an impression which is just not true Ads are to ultimately make a company money it is why when marketing companies try to sell advertising space the 1st question is ROI

But i dont disgaree agree with your point just point above but your orginal comment was a gross over generalisation

            @Trying2SaveABuck:

            OP

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

          • @Trying2SaveABuck: I’m not having a go at you or complaining about your thinking, I’m just pointing out what advertisements are designed to do.

but your orginal point ads are to make an impression which is just not true

            It is though…

Advertising campaigns are designed to invoke reactions and thinking about a product.

The result is as you said:

to ultimately make a company money

There is more than one way to skin a cat, some companies choose clever catchy advertising with stars, others go down different avenues like being annoying, yelling, stupid jingles etc.

Not all advertising is the same but the goal is: to get impressions - which ultimately lead to ROI.

Fanta. Fizzed by Fred. With that guy jumping into a silo of fanta. Turned me off.

Also… In the early 2000s all those ads of people bathijg in a luxurious magnum icecream bar…. Private parts should be no where near my food.

  • Zespri kiwifruit. Shudder.

    • I actually like that ad. Catchy tune.

If I buy products based on ads… oh boy, I will be so miserable.
Just ignore them - adblocker, etc…

  • +1

I’ve been conditioned to skip ads so much that I even skip the ones I don’t want to.

(after I click skip, deep regret. wish I could watch the ad but not possible)

here’s an ad, just because you said ad. https://youtu.be/_oBOFTOsFNI

A certain shaving brand and their do better campaign a few years back, will specifically avoid them indefinitely

    Preachy, annoying tunes, lame humour.

IIRC AAMI, Coles, Uncle Toby's, KFC have all had ads that reduced my patronage or dropped them down a tier when deciding between products.

With minimal exposure to advertising, nothing current springs to mind.

    • ALDI falls into this category. I don't find it humorous but cringey lame.

    • Thinking about this one a bit more there's also pretentious and ads that try and guilt you.

  • +1

In the same way I try not to be influenced by advertising to make me buy products, I also try not to be influenced by advertising (or outrage at certain advertising) to not buy certain products.

Though that excludes ozb deal posts ;)

  • ads are cool (as long as you can skip when don't want to watch/listen)
but yeah, national tiles is rather annoying
    .

Bellissimo mattress ads. As soon as I hear their ads on the radio, I get so angry that I want to rip the stereo right out of the car and throw it out the window.

Second on that list … “HELLO! Frank Walker from National Tiles…” nope.

    • +1

You just reminded me of the pancake palor ad many years ago i used to change the station everytime i heard it have never been back to PP since due to that ad and the fact it is a colossal rip off

    • +1

Shit ads, but you have the rankings the wrong way around… It obviously works so well that everyone in the country knows the prick, just multiply that number by the conversion ratio. The conversion ratio doesn't even need to be high when you ad is that far reaching.

  • Any ad from Global Shop Direct is immediately dismissed by me.

Crap at an extraordinary price, but wait, buy 1 get 1 "free" + $9.95 p&p

Full cost of product refund, but not the $9.95 p&p and you have to pay any return costs. So, in this example you spent $9.95 + return cost if it isn't suitable. Do you see where the profits are being made? O^O

They used to advertise on the secondary FTA channels in low audience times but progressively increased to the majors at prime times.

FFS people, stop buying their crap.

    • Anything direct marketing in tv is generally just crap.

  • Uber Eats. Hates those ads and will never try it.

  • Annoying ads
    Ads that give you illfeel
    Very long duration ads
    Ads with overpriced products

All advertisers should learn from Japanese ads. Long time ago I used to watch a lot of Japanese ads in YouTube (JPCMHD channel). Very interesting, funny, creative. I think I'll watch again the channel and also JapanesecommercialsHD channel in YouTube …

Those recent Telstra ads they've been playing during the Olympics. How are a couple of animals doing random pieces to camera meant to convey that Telstra is the 'better mobile network'? They just make me angry! 😡

    • been playing during the Olympics.

I can handle the Telstra ones, but if I have to hear Alex Lloyd's "Amazing" one more time…. ;)

  • on the topic of ads.

did anyone notice on prime the new pay $2.99 option only claims to give you “Limited ads”. that’s why I didn’t pay the extra $2.99 on my month of prime. doesn’t claim to remove all ads.

also when they increased ads and made that extra payment option available, also noticed “ads” on the Amazon home page.

I saw similar ad looking product images on the homepage before, but clicking them would actually just open the item page on Amazon.

I was surprised this time around I clicked on the ad looking product image and this time it takes you to the home page of the brand?!

  • The betting ads are just appalling. You are letting your team and mates down if you don’t bet. Really?
