    Time to switch from AGL

    • +1

I would thoroughly recommend my fellow bargainers to steer well clear of ENGIE. Worst company I've ever dealt with. They'll make that welcome credit back off you one way or another! Whether through daily supply charge and tariff hikes, or through your wasted hours having to talk to their useless phone operators and having to take things to the ombudsman.

  • +12

provided you have not received a welcome credit from us in the past 12 months.

Damn, looks like they caught up.

    Recieved 3 credits in last 12 months = $700

    • +2

Do you think 'us' includes from Simply Energy? It was a rebrand right? not an acquisition

      • Yeah rebrand

      • +4

Now that's what I come to OzB for.

I'll be arguing I received my last discount from Simply and have nothing from Engie.

        • Did you do this and were you able to get the credit?

          • +1

@yoquierotaco: I'm currently in a long back and forth over the last couple of months but you can bet your ass I won't be paying anything

    • I wonder if they consider the $200 credit for electricity and gas separately within the 12 months period? Eg, if one had only received a $200 electricity credit, would the $200 gas credit still be eligible within the 12 months? Technically different accounts.

  • +6

damn, ill to wait till i burn through the $225 AGL credit

  • +10

Suppliers that offer signup credits typically have very high energy rates.

    • Ok

    • +1

It should be part of the due diligence for signing up to any energy retailer. After looking at the rates they were pretty identical to my past retailer (Powershop) so I signed up to this last week on the movie perks plan. 4 free movie tickets, +bonus Village points every month + $200 welcome credit. Pretty hard to beat IMO.

      • +1

They are 20c higher per day for the supply charge compared to my current provider.

        • What about the rates?

          • -5

@viperacr: the same, so an extra $10/month, the $200 credit will take 20 months to be outweighed, not worth it.

    • Just like the old shopper dockets. Just give us cheap rates that are easily comparable without the cashbacks.

      • +1

The dockets didn't allow people to pay half or less their normal bills by churning.

  • +2

I just tried to switch to an EV plan but they can't/wont supply my address. Chat said something about not having purchased licence from the distributor yet. Energex area(SE QLD)

    • Same happened here. Annoying as it's quite a good plan now that Ovo have up there rates

      • AGL have the same EV plan 8c/kwh 00-06 as OVO

      • +2

FYI its a 6c discount off the off peak rate.

I got screwed over cos i thought it was 6c EV rate.

OvO and AGL still worked out the best for me in terms of EV plans

        • Holy crap, I was just looking at the EV plan with Engie and assumed it was 6c/kWh from 12-6am. But the wording of it was really strange, so I went searching and came across your comment.. That's very dodgy advertising!!

          • @JoelT: happy to save someone the trouble.

Was very annoyed when i found out about it and disconnected it ASAP.

Shocking wording to be honest, trying to lure alot of EV owners in

            • @tkboi: thanks for the heads up - nearly signed up as i thought 6c was a good rate with 10c for export.

              • @F1Maniac: hope it helps alot more people… to be honest its such a scam how they worded it!!

    • Engie are absolutely useless in this regard, I had infinitely big issues trying to sign up with them, and ultimately they decided it was too hard and stopped offering to help/call back etc

  • i just moved away from engie to agl last month as my rate jumps

    from 1.1642400 $/day to 1.5077700 $/day

vs my current agl rates is only 94c a day

    • +3

Yeah this engie looks exy, and it doesn’t even show the rates on the main page, tells me to go to https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au 😒

    • same here moved from engie to agl last month as the rates jumped too high wen I compared with agl

  • +2

You can also stack with cashback via shopback/cashrewards

    • Hmm how confident are you it’d stack with CashRewards? I’d rather 100% get the credits than wait around for a cash back to hit

      Both would be great though

      • +1

I got both when I signed up 6 months ago via shopback/econnex

    • tracking is getting quite random with SB these days. Even when it does track, ive had them reject with no explenation. So its a case of be happy if it tracks and gets paid out but dont rely on it.

  • +3

$200 is nice, but I just looked at their rates with Energex and it is crazy expensive.

35.49c-37.26c per kWh + 5.5c per kWh FIT.

Not worth it unfortunately, will stick with Ovo for now.

  • +6

Just moved away from these guys. Their rates were horrendous. Any "credit" you recieve will just be eaten up by their price gouging rates especially in VIC.

    • Ty, I looked it up. Their rate is high
      Supply charges 131.63 ¢/day

      Flat All consumption 30.45 ¢/kWh

      • I’m envious that those are high rates for you. Where I am in QLD, you won’t find any cheaper rates for my address.

        • Arent you guys has renewable energy up there ? Or it's all talk

    • Completely agree with you

  • I cant seem to search any address there :(

    • +2

You just need to enter postcode or suburb name.

    • +1

Are you searching an address in a box that is for a postcode / suburb? :P

  • Just looked them up for SA and they have awfully high electricity rates. Their peak and offpeak rate is about 10c higher than the likes of GloBird. So if you are a house that uses 500 Kwh a month, that is $50 in extra charges so technically, in 4 months the $200 credit will be negligible. Best to switch for a month and use the credit, then move away IMO.

I would rather go Powershop for electricity via Big Switch ($200 credit on offer and much better rates)

    • @Megatron Are you sure you checked correctly, their engie saver plan is very similar pricing to powershop in SA

      Engie saver :

      44.31c per kWh
for the first 11kWh used per day
46.53c per kW or usage over 11kWh per day

      Power shop

      Peak time (6:00am to 9:59am, 3:00pm to 11:59pm, 12:00am to 12:59am)
      46.78c per kWh

      • Are you looking at Time of Use tarrif? Or single rate tarrif?

      • Just checked and you are comparing wrong rates.. you have compared Engie's single rate tarrif with Powershop's Time of Use rates.

Here is a comparison of Single rate tarrifs

                        Engie Saver ----------------- PowerShop

        Supply charge ——- 121.46 ——————————- 102.77
        Usage ————— 44.31 to 46.53 ———————— 36.80

Energymade Easy says Engie Plan for a High usage house will cost $3,740 per year while Powershop will be $3,210… so Powershop will save you $530 in a year if you were a house using 21 Kwh enegy per day. And you still get $200 credit if you sign up via Big Switch (otherwise $150).

        • How do we even elect if we will be on single Tarif or time of use , I’ve always been on a. Single Tarif rate ?

The energy comparison site always has different rates , when I go to the actual energy proceeds website and put in my details the rates jump

          • +1

@strikerzebra: You can request to change your tarrif to a time of use tarrif via your retailer. However, once done you have no option to go back to single tarrif. I feel the single tarrif rates rare now better than time of use, specifically if your usage is mostly peak. I asked my retailer to put me back to single tarrif and was told that I couldnt go back, which sucks..

            • @Megatron: When I check single Tarif rates it’s always higher than the peak rates of time of use , or am I missing something , why would single Tarif be better if the rate is always higher ?

For example pacific blue single tariff is 45.1 cents , while off peak under time of use is like 44 cents

              • @strikerzebra: Not sure where you are but I see 35.20 cents single rate and 90.20 cent supply charge for pacific blue.. the TOU peak rate is indeed about 44c though. What postcode are you looking if you dont mind me asking?

                • @Megatron: I’m 5043, yeh I can see 35.2 but when I put in my full address it then shows the below;

                  Daily charge (¢/day incl GST)
                  90.200
                  Peak rate (¢/kWh incl GST)
                  43.560
                  Shoulder rate (¢/kWh incl GST)
                  24.420
Off peak rate (¢/kWh incl GST)
                  21.230

Don’t know why it adjusts my putting in my correct address

                  • @strikerzebra: Yeah those are TOU rates.. when you put your address, it retrieves your tarrif type from wholesale.. check your last bill, you are likely on TOU tarrif.. and pacific blue has one of the cheapest TOU rates if you dont have solar.

                    • @Megatron: My bill says something like 44 cents per kw for the first 10kw then 46 cents per kw after , seems like a shit tou tarrif

I do have a 6.6 kw solar system but that wouldn’t matter to much with the feed in rates these days

                      • @strikerzebra: Your best bet is to ring your retailer and ask them if you are on TOU or Single Tarrif. Then when you churn, your tarrif will carry over in most cases. The 44c and 46c do sound crap if you are on single rate. In your situation, I will switch to Power shop for the $200 credit and then later move to Pacific Blue.

                        • @Megatron: Cheers , I was in a dramatically worse plan before before i switched, yeh I’m thinking of switching as well.

    • I'm using about 1500kwh a month at the moment (wfh, all electric heating) and the rates are 12c higher than OVO for me. I'd burn through the $100 credit in Victoria in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the heads up on that Powershop one, I hadn't seen that and $150 electricity and better rates make it worthwhile.

      • Wow 1500 Kwh a month is massive.. assume you have a massive 20 Kw+ aircon unit and everything else (hot water, cooktop etc.) are on electricity?

        • hot water and cooktop are gas, but are pretty efficient, costs about $30 usage. But yeah, work from home, about 11kw of split systems, missus has a heater in her office that uses who knows what. Biggest problem is the house has no insulation, is drafty and all the sealing work I've been doing actually has a noticeable improvement on the power bills.

I also have an EV, so probably 200kwh is that.

  • how long do we need to stay to get credit?

    • +1

first bill so 1 quarter? then leave after

      • thanks

      • +2

Nah, as soon as you use up $200.
Time it right by monitoring meter for usage. When your at $190, churn because it take about 1 week for transfer to finalise. Remember to submit meter read when you hit $200 usage

  • +1

I read that off peak rate of their EV plan off-peak is just a 6c discount from their peak rate. Please correct me if I am wrong. That's why I pick AGL instead of them even they have welcome credit.

    6c/kWh super off-peak discount

    • Ahh, you could be right there. Makes it a whole less attractive.

    • +1

Nope you are right. its just 6c discount.

i got f*** over by there stupid wording.

Got the credit and bailed ASAP

  • +1

I had an extensive chat with Engie that although I was able to go through the onboarding sign up process they did not have the billing rights to my Energex tariff code in Qld (3900) they only have the rights to 8400 (flat rate, those still on a basic meter) and 8900 (tou)

    Time wasting losers..

    • moving to origin makes your metre reconfigured back to 8400 then Engie

      • That's not possible. That's like going from a smart meter to a basic meter.

Origin does not have Demand rate charges, so it's flat rate. It dosent change your tariff if you change provider.

        • I have done that many times switching between Demand and flat rates. All depend on who the reseller is. I have switched back and forth between Origin, AGL, Energy Australia, Energy Local, Ampol Energy in the last 6 months. I was on demand charge with EA, Energy local and AGL (old plan) but flat rate on origin, ampol and new AGL plans.

You dont need to change the meter. They will config into 8400 flat rate on your smart meter.

edit: Im in SEQ distributor: Energex

          • +1

@catbin: That's exactly what I'm saying. Depends on the retailer yes. I'm talking about the AEC migrating every Australian onto a smart meter and it's effect on the tariff type you're able to be billed on (key word is 'able to' dosent mean the retailer will) It's whole issue in itself where people who transitioned into smart meters didn't understand how Demand charges are billed and got bill shock.

As you and I have both said, Origin, for example, dosent implement Demand charges but opts for a flat rate (no idea why, since smart meters have the capability and other retailers do it, perhaps it's a business decision)

What I'm saying is your energy distributer sets your tariff type and the retailer choses how it will bill you. You have no say in your tariff type switching between flat rate <-> Demand or Time of Use. You only have the option of switching between Demand and Time of Use.

Imo Australians got shafted even more going with "smart meters" which now have this ability to scrutinise and bill you in 30 minute increments on your maximum power use.

  • +3

Thanks OP. I highly encourage everyone if you're not already doing this to just churcn away and shop around every month.

We've not had a bill since November last year thanks to the OzB community.

Free welcome credit. Churn. Burn the credit and then change again. Loyalty pays !

    • Watch out for credit checks though, someone mentioned they were declined at one point after churning too regularly?

    • Are you able to set up the new provider with a specific switch over date say for example if you are still in promo period with your existing provider?

      • I have been knocked back once. I guess it's a gamble I'll take.

With regards to credit ive just been going month by month and as soon as the preloaded welcome credit is spent I change the next day.

    • Do you change sign up anyday or you wait for exact bill cycles?

      • I have been waiting to get the monthly bill and then changing once all free credit has been used.

Currently agl offers 175. On that. PowerShop is 150.

  • +1

Engine customer service seems to be terrible. Can't even chat properly as agent keep disconnecting chat..

  • If just gas then $100 for vic or do I need to port both

  • I have used them a few months ago. I guess I won’t get the credit again. Anyone has experience getting the credit again within 12 months?

  • Their gas rates for NSW are at the highest on the energyeasymade comparison,

    Supply charge
    67.84c/day

    General usage charges
    2.31-7.00c/MJ (7 cents is terrible)

Upon quick calculation using my existing bill, I'm still paying $100+ after $200 credit deduction & 12% bill discount 🤔

  • +5

Is it me or they make it extremely difficult to see the supply cost per day and unit cost per Mj or kWh ?

    • +2

Yes really difficult to find rates. Need to click through multiple times and then download a pdf. Scumbag tactics

    • +3

I was just trying to find the same. I don't easily neg deals but this is definitely neg worthy.

  • +2

What a load of crap system they have. Couldn’t find electricity/gas charges per unit for my postcode. Just the estimated ones. Waste.

  • Rates are not terrible but definitely not as good as my current EnergyAustralia rates (SA 5255 with Solar).

  • +3

These guys are 100% price gouging. Rates are crazy high and I'm comparing with all the other sign up bonus retailers that I've recently churned from. Beware not to get caught out! Your $200 sign up bonus will be eroded pretty quickly

  • Everyone saying they have shocking rates but I put my bills through the government compare website and they came up cheapest……
I do get 20% off electricity and 12% off gas for both supply and usage.
Maybe that's why it is better than what the website says with other suppliers

    • +2

Yeh the comparison website isn’t always correct , if you are on some old plan it won’t do an equal comparison

  • Has anyone else signed up via CashBack and also got the Elec and Gas credits? Can’t find much in the T&Cs if you’d be able to get both

    • Signed up for AGL and got both cashback from cash rewards and $300 credit

      • How long do you have to stay to get cashback?

        • 3 months

      • Legend, hopefully Engie honour both cash back and sign up credits for elec and gas - fingers crossed

  • I have my NBN packaged with electricity with AGL which brings it down to $60 instead of $90. Can someone suggest an NBN plan I can churn to for around the $60 mark?

      • +1

Thank you, that looks great for the next six months!

Edit: I just read the comments on a deal from the. Posted earlier in the year and lots of people were referencing switching from Exetel. Exetel are currently offering $53.99 per month for six months with $40 cashback via Top Cashback so I think I will go with them.

  • When switching providers - do you need to let your old one know? Or does it automatically cancel the plan you have with your old one kinda like nbn?

    • Your new provider will sort it out with your previous provider. You don't need to do anything.
Except maybe upload a pic of your meter so your final bill is based on actual read not estimated read. (I'm not 100% sure about that process so take that with a grain of salt.)
