I'm no tech and spec expert but it all looks good beside from the processor clock speed at 1.4ghz, which seems to be relatively low compared to others. Hope someone with more knowledge can provide their insights.

handheld gaming devices are great if you don't play keyboard games, and come on, they aren't gonna retire ultrabooks, different use cases

      • It's weird that they phrased it in a way like there haven't already been laptops with the 680M/780M out there for years… laptops are benefiting from the same improvements.

      • -4

I have a Jewish friend who would like to pick this up from a store in inner Melbourne. He plans to use it for local community publishing.

Would people recommend this laptop and store?

      • -2

What is the use case exactly? Someone using it as a main computer? Don’t think so. It’s mostly for in-betweens and on the go. I’ve replaced mine for sure and am very happy to use it as my main as well as my portable in my car. Portable monitors are very accessible, and I’ve always have to use at least a proper keyboard with my laptop anyway. This means you also have a single source of truth, no double maintenance etc.

        Just my experience.

        • +3

Plenty of people just have a laptop as their computer. Not everyone needs a desktop PC with a 4090 in it. And they definitely don't need a Steam Deck with a portable monitor and a lot of extra peripherals. That's just crazy, any non gamer is not considering that option.

          • +1

@sallan75: I know right, a laptop is still the best way to travel, imaging packing keyboard and portable portible monitors into your carry on, lol.

          • -4

@sallan75: Having a laptop as a main computer is not a good idea because of the ergonomics. I have seen people with neck issues for starters. You would really want to have a separate monitor and a proper keyboard so you can adjust the angles and distance according to your body. It’s nothing to do with being a gamer or otherwise. A separate keyboard mouse can be as cheap as $20, and monitors are also only around $150.

I don’t have a chiropractor or massage therapist on call because I don’t need to ever see one. These appointments cost way more than a proper setup, on top of the suffering one endures.

            • +1

@Alley Cat: many people do use a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor with a laptop at home. In fact I'd guess that this is how most people use a computer at home since the pandemic

              • -1

@beltdrive: That’s what I expect most people are like, but the previous comment was saying people use the laptop as a main and don’t have the peripherals.

        • +1

I know plenty of people that use a laptop as their main computer and have no need for a full desktop tower at all - either for portability reasons, or budget reasons.

I used a laptop alone for 4 years of schooling - I think it's pretty fair to assume that most people who would use their device for anything more than gaming would not choose a steam deck or other portable gaming device for use at work, uni or other schooling.

edit: also not to mention other workloads like video editing on the go etc…

          • -5

@sombreserotonin: See my comments above — it’s about health, not functionality. Lots of us eat Migoreng in uni too, but we tend to later learn to eat real food for some reason, that said, not all of us learn to do that either. Maybe reconsider your priorities.

            • +1

@Alley Cat: You do realise you can move things around in your setup to make it more ergonomic right?

You also said "Handheld gaming devices should retire ultrabooks very soon or at least push them to make these lighter and more powerful.", I don't recall anyone responding to your comment about health lol

Maybe reconsider functionality at the same time :)

              • -4

@sombreserotonin: You can move things around, but not to the point that you should be using for extended time. It’s my opinion anyway, if it works for you, that’s even better.

The health part is on people using a laptop as their sole device and not having it set up properly with peripherals. I do not agree on that use case being a legit one, for the manufacturers, of course it is a target demographic, but with the best interest of the users in mind, that should never be one.

I don’t see the functionalities being different. An ultrabook is a full-fledged computer, so is a handheld device. They are just not being marketed as one, yet.

                • +3

@Alley Cat: You are fascinating. I would love to do a case study on you. The perfect example of someone unable to see the world outside of their own personal experiences.

                  • @ONEMariachi: he would go on holiday packing a ally X, a keyboard a mouse, a dock, bunch of cables, and a portable monitor, cos he refuse to just get a laptop.

                    • +1

@optusprime: The part that really gets me is how stuck on what a primary device is to some people. Apparently the only way to use a laptop/pc is to sit at a desk or 10 hours. Hence talking about back issues. There's apparently no possible other way to use a laptop other than ways that cause apparent health problems.

I need to go let my old man know that he is using his laptop wrong. Because he only uses it 30-45 minutes a day at most at his dining table for very basic things. Alley Cat says you must get a keyboard, dock, screen, sit stand desk, masseuse. Just so he can set his fantasy football team, check the occasional email and watch old Serbian youtube videos.

I think Alley's mind might explode when he finds out that a large percentage of people don't even have a primary PC of any kind, and do all their emailing/shopping/banking from a phone.

    • How much battery do you normally get on handheld gaming devices?

      • About 3 hours if I’m doing office work.

    • Yeah I'd love to write up a long assignment or work brief on the steam deck.

  • if only this listed on ebay and we can use the 17% off ebay+ code…..

    sorry noob here
    intel Core Ultra 7
where it sits (performance wise) comparing with the normal i series? for example between gen 11 and 12, or ??

    • +2

It's the newest, they reset the numbering. This is Core Ultra Series 1 (series 2 is due out next month, probably explaining the discount). So technically gen 15, I suppose.

  • 16GB, now we're talking. :-)

  • +7

    In case you're wondering, 3k UHD is 2880 x 1800 (16:10).

  • so pretty.. oh.. should i… but my usage with laptop is 95% cover closed (connected to external monitor), plug in.
oled and those pretty things will get wasted. even travelling i didnt bother to carry laptop - just phone zfold is enough and maybe ms surface tablet.

    • +1

"Core Ultra" known as Meteor Lake is the successor to Raptor Lake P (13th gen mobile).
The core principle is the big-little architecture (similar to ARM-based chips) with efficient cores and low-power cores on top of the usual performance cores.
That's resulted in improvements in power draw when idle (as low as 5W) which has increased battery life significantly.
Though it's still inferior to Apple silicon and AMD's new Ryzen "AI" - it's a direct competitor to the AMD Ryzen 8000 in terms of performance and efficiency (but temps suffer when doing any performance tasks e.g. video rendering).
It has rendered any previous gen Intel laptop irrelevant in my books (unless you want a hotbox that runs out of battery in a few hours).

      • wow! thanks so basically best atm.
they should just continue using the 14 gen 15 16 17 until gen 99 to make it easier for noobs.
i hate the naming ultra, plus, etc etc its basically useless. give us numbers!

        • +2

I wouldn't call it "best" by any stretch of the imagination.
If you want pure efficiency M3 (M4 coming soon).
If you want idle efficiency on Windows then Snapdragon Elite (suffers from high power draw when doing performance tasks like x86 chips).
Efficiency is slightly more mixed on Ryzen "AI" but performance beats M3 except on Windows so that's what I'd personally get.
Meteor lake is competing with last gen products (and oftentimes losing). Upcoming Lunar Lake is supposed to be Intel's answer to M4 and Ryzen "AI" but given their micro-code situation I would lean against buying Intel until they solve that. See GamersNexus etc for detailed investigations.

          • @JTayzer: for $1,115 is this a good buy and will it last for 6 years without need to upgrade?

            • @CyberMurning: I think for that price you can't really beat it overall. There are Lenovo Education options e.g. Ideapads with 8840HS - but those will have worse build quality/screen etc.
              Solid review of the laptop:
              https://www.ultrabookreview.com/66513-asus-zenbook-14-ux3405…
In terms of whether it will last 6 years that really depends on what your use case is. Web browsing, media playback, some light performance tasks definitely. Will 16GB be enough for Windows in 6 years? Given the trajectory it doesn't seem like 16GB will be ideal by that time but who knows.
Personally I would invest in a laptop with at least 24GB RAM soldered if I was planning to have that many years of use out of it. AMD is signaling this as their "AI" CPUs start at 24GB ram baked in.
If the RAM wasn't soldered I wouldn't mention any of this but I think it's something to consider.
If you're using it for 3 years then it's a pretty easy call.

              • @JTayzer: right now im using intel gen 9 - 16gb ram for 5 years without issues but lately lagging not sure why. 10 chrome tabs some extensions, thunderbird email client at the back, and few others background apps running so a bit frustrated when the whole screen freezes for like 5 seconds

                • @CyberMurning: What CPU (and laptop) is it exactly? You can check in Task Manager.
The lag could be from thermal throttling as older Intel mobile chips were quite garbage (speaking from experience). Edit: A thermal re-paste might help, and cleaning out dust from the fan/s.

                  • @JTayzer: yeah i admit i like chrome and their extension, few running on taskbar like logitech software etc but it is really 9th gen cant handle them? its 16GB ram aswell

                    msi gf75 thin.i5-9300H 16GB GTX1050Ti
i confused with laptop with dual gpus.. i mean in the last 5 years i have no idea if i have ever used that 1050ti or not! just no idea really which one is running (igpu or egpu). i dont like msi.
hmm yeah will try do that repasting i need to get the paste, the cleaner, and cottonbuds and watch some youtube on how.

                    • +1

@CyberMurning: 4 core 8 thread CPU on 14nm, not surprised your laptop is chugging. Chrome isn't great for RAM or CPU efficiency but I'm also guilty of maining it.
Things got a lot more simple with NVIDIA Optimus and MUX switches, but these days iGPUs can hold their own. The Core Ultra 7 iGPU easily matches the 1050TI so you don't need to worry about that.
If you plan on gaming I would consider a different laptop but otherwise given your current laptop, switching to the Zenbook isn't a bad move.

                      • +1

@JTayzer: cheers will think about this.

                      • @JTayzer: @JTayzer
sorry one more as i cant DM you :)
would you think for me this is better? just $1000 after TRS!

(always plug in, not travelling, not using the built in screen, not gaming but heavy on chrome and most important i cant afford to upgrade every 2 years / long term usage)

                        Ryzen 5 (R5-8645HS) RTX4050 6GB TGP 55W, MUX Switch
                        16" FHD (1920 x 1200) 165 Hz refresh rate.
16 GB RAM both slot upgradable, 2x nvme slots

                        • @CyberMurning: No worries, need a bit more info than that though - link to laptop would be great.

                          • @JTayzer: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-nitro…

worry me: would laptop without TB4 still good in 2029 ? also im not gaming now but probably will (tekken games not very demanding) later (no i dont have console), and sometimes i remux mkv so i like to have good gpu again for long term i hope

                            • @CyberMurning: Very personal but I think Acer is atrocious so I wouldn't recommend any of their products period.
I would try to shell out for an 8 core/16 thread + 4060 configuration at least if you want it to last 5+ years (nearly $2000 unless you're willing to go MSI which have no info on whether MUX switches are included).
Thunderbolt 4 is Intel proprietary so any laptop with USB4 is almost identical (minimum 5Gbps on USB4 vs 10Gbps - but some USB4 can be 10Gbps). No gaming laptops with USB4/TB4 exist at this price range though.

                              • @JTayzer: ok thanks!

                                • @CyberMurning: Apologies for the spamming but there's an even cheaper option with Metabox: https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b503/note-Three-1-Laptop
The 12th gen i7 is almost identical to the 13th gen i7 in the Infinity laptop (both outpace the Ryzen 5 and efficiency isn't important since you're always plugged in).
Edit: My bad, it doesn't come with official Windows installed ($160 addon!!!) but it comes with 2x16GB, so it's a tossup.

                            • @CyberMurning: Found this: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/65196/infinity-o5-core-i…
Spec-wise better than the Acer in every way and you get the full TGP on the 4060 (115W+25W boost - I would deactivate boost completely to run cooler as 100W is pretty much the limit on power scaling). Comes with 1x 16GB SODIMM, so you can drop in another 16GB SODIMM for an immediate RAM upgrade. No MUX switch though, but that's not important if you're always docked and using the port that connects directly to the 4060.

                              • @JTayzer: somehow that doesnt interest me lol i'll 80% leaning to the acer for now plust that 4060 is over my budget

    • Just wondering…so the 5% time is opening the cover to press the power button to turn it on? And then close it?

      • yes correct. i wish the power is outside so i dont need to lift the lid :D

  • HODL

  • +2

Please read the update guys, seems to be additional 13% with shopback at The Good Guys, no experience with this though, please correct anything wrong!

      • wow and with TRS from the gross price, i can pay just $1,115ish for this! a bargain?

        • +1

Not quite $1,115 but more around $1250. Still pretty decent though.

        • +1

Whos had to deal with bringing a TRS item back in?

          • @0806449: its okay as long you follow the rules. each person entitle to bring back free tax item up to $900 for adults and $450 for children
this one brand new $1,400 it will have less value second hand. i will say i dropped it so its now worth $900 only/.
or put some ugly stickers on the cover (put a cling wrap first so you can remove all easily after) there the value will drop a lot it is so ugly no one want to buy this laptop
or combine if travelling more than 2ppl. done

Families travelling together can pool this allowance (a couple with one child can bring in a total of AUD 900 + AUD 900 + AUD 450 = AUD 2250 worth of goods into Australia without paying duty or GST). This is called your passenger concession.

well yeah if you bring back $40k diamond ring then good luck see you on tv border security

yes dont use price beat just do it simple and straight with cashback dont take risk. no code no haggle no beat no giftcards no buts

    • +1

That's what shows on their cashback exclusions list: Any Price Beat discount amounts or promo code discount amounts that have been applied to the order
Not worth taking the risk for $10.

Looks like the good guys have removed the item. What a shame, been looking for a U7 and upwards laptop for business use (long battery life, no big graphics, light, stylish is a plus)

Not sure how this stacks up against the ryzen CPU, similar specs apart from the ssd size (this is 1TB vs 512GB on ryzen), has wifi 7 and higher spec Bluetooth, etc.

  • Price has reverted back to $1897 on officeworks. Is anyone still getting $1437 anywhere :(

  • Needed 32gb for me to pull trigger

  • Missed out on TGG deal with cashback, but managed to get officeworks to price beat Amazon over the phone and got it for $1,367. Which is not too bad considering don’t have to wait for cashback.
