Cheapest its ever been for the full P8 package with remote and 2 cameras. So much for "Prime day" sales amirite, its now a full $53 cheaper than the Prime day sale - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/856616 - see the comments there for more info on this device.

I've just had to do the switcheroo and return/refund/re-order. They won't just refund the difference. It takes 5 minutes on amazon chat to instigate the switcheroo, then a trip to the post office, I urge everyone who bought in the last deal to do the same.

This device just works. I use it with wireless Android Auto and it boots up within a few seconds and hardly ever craps out.

I have had this in one of our cars for 10 months and it is fantastic, even in the heat of summer sitting up on the hot dashboard. The remote is really good and the screen is very easy to read. And dual dashcams when you add a (up to) 128GB microSD - higher capacity doesn't work I've tried. Reversing camera is very nice.

Sure you can buy this kind of thing for half this price on aliexpress, but this ATOTO unit is much higher quality than those. I have tried a circa $100 one and sent it back because it wouldn't reliably connect - and the screen was awful. I have just bought a second one of these P8s for our other car its that good.

The only drawback with these P8's is that you must use their camera(s) and the supplied cabling. So it usually works out much cheaper to buy the full 2 camera kit, rather than add cameras later.

NOTE: There is a P9 version in the states, which I assume is coming here if they sort out the 4G bands etc. That is basically the same thing but its running the full Android OS. Its also very expensive compared to this.

The price drop could be them clearing out stocks for the new P9 version, which has full Android OS, rather than the P8's linux with AA/carplay passthrough OS. Its very expensive though (>$400)…

Also note that these now come with an external mic as well as the internal one. It also has an additional USB-C port on the back of the unit for USB storage, as well as the usual USB port on the 12V adapter. There have been at least 3 revisions of this device in the past year, this is the newest and most fully featured revision.

  • Bought one last month and returning it as the call quality is terrible.

    • Did you use the internal or external mic? I've never had any complaints using the internal mic on mine. I think it is affected by placement of the unit in relation to the car/dash/vents/etc.

      • The internal mic audio quality on my unit is not audible but the external mic works fine.
The buttons on the wireless remote works half of the time at best.

        • I have noticed on these newest versions they no longer have a shipping/isolating tab to disconnect the remotes button cell battery. They used to do this on an earlier revision. I had to replace the button cell on my earlier one, and the remote on that works much better than the new version.

So I suspect they are using crappy batteries and they need to be swapped out with a fresh one to get the proper functionality out of the box.

          • @stumo: I have the new or latest version as I only bought it recently.
I did change the battery. The problem is the wireless range from the remote to the head unit is very very short, so you will need to mount the remote fairly close to the unit and preferrable within line of sight.
ATOTO even shipped a replacement remote to me, still the same problem.

            • @purple1: OK I will do some testing then. My old version remote works just fine like you would expect, compared to my newest one that is a bit crap like you say. I just assumed it was a battery issue. I will try it tonight and report back.

              • @stumo: I had some problems keeping the unit fixed to my dashboard, the unit with all the cables connected has some weight to it. The suction cup keeps coming apart from the larger sticky pad, so I super glued them together, but then the sticky pad is separating from the dash with only 20% contact now.

                • +1

@purple1: Yeah I don't like the new arm, it doesn't provide the range of movement of the older arm. Also the dash pad thing is different. The old dash pad has been fine for 10 months. I don't have enough experience of the new pad to make a call, but will keep an eye on it. Also note that I use a couple of blobs of blu-tak on the bottom edge of the device where I have it resting on the dash, so that cuts down any stress on the mount a fair bit.

In other news I have played with the old and new remotes now. As I suspected the new remotes battery was just under 3V. SO I replaced it with a 3.1V Duracell I had lying around and it is fine now. I suggest maybe your car has something else on the 433MHz band that could be interfering?

                  • @stumo: I'm not aware of any LPD433 device in my car although 433MHz is a popular RF but there is no way for me to test it. There is also no way to change the operating LPD433 channel for the ATOTO remote that I'm aware of. I will look in to replacing the battery again. Thanks.

I have the previous version (probably about 6 months old), the built-in mic is laughably bad, pretty much unusable but it's located on the side of the unit. Got the new version about a month ago, the mic is now located at the front bottom corner. It works a lot better, at least usable but there's also the option of using the external mic which made a negligible difference from my quick testing.

I also have issues with the wireless remote. Works half the time, and I need to double or triple click to register a command. Still not fixed in the new version.

    • What about the other features? Maps/Music etc? Reckon the whole unit isn't worth the trouble?

      • Maps/Music is all driven through your mobile phone via Wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
For me, the main purpose was the backup camera as my old car did not come with one.
Took me a good 5 hours to wire up the whole package. Had some fun isolating the reverse light wire harness cable connector, not.

  • How does this work? Can I still play music via phone BT through my car sound system with this connected?

    • +1

It goes between your car stereo and phone. So you no-longer connect your phone directly to the car stereo. You connect your phone to this device using AA/carplay, and it connects to your car stereo directly for sound.

      • Thanks

Dang, I bought the one from Prime day. The quality was better than I expected but I was expecting something pretty cheap. I only wanted it for the wireless android auto and the dashcam so I only have these in use. Took me less than an hour to install. It is a cheap>basic unit though. I wouldn't say it's good quality but probably reasonable value for $150.

The Wireless Android Auto works better than other standalone units I have had a short experience with. The dashcam only randomly stopped once in the past few weeks, came back after a power cycle but I wouldn't have been aware if I wasn't monitoring it (which would be annoying if something did actually happen). I still use my inbuilt car microphone for phone calls.

    • Yeah it really needs some kind of audible/visual alert if the dashcam isn't working. I only wanted this for AA so the dashcam is just a bonus feature for me, as I already have a separate dashcam (with audio alerts if something is wrong).

      • There is no option to selectively record the front or rear camera, it will record from both camera feeds even if there is no camera connected, provided the MicroSD card is installed. Also, there is no option to record your current vehicle speed or GPS location details.

        • My preference is not to have current GPS extrapolated and location details recorded haha.

    • How are you finding the camera quality? Mine seems pretty terrible…I don’t think I can make out a lot of the number plates.

      • It's not great but my intention was not to identify number plates. I just wanted to record other people doing silly things for my own amusement.

  • These are awesome, installed it in 2 family members cars, very affordable way to get front and rear dashcam, reverse camera and wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay in cars that lack that functionality. The people who drive the cars love them.

  • Looks like it's out of stock at the moment.

For those who have it stalled, do you have to have cables running all throughout the car?

    • +1

No, I do not. Bought it when it was still very new at $240 so mine didn't come with extras because I was cheap. Seems like they made improvements to the design especially the mounting because my arm suction cup fully melted into my windscreen.

This is one of the best of these things I've seen as it has all it's ports on the car charger thing instead of the actual screen which most generic devices do making cable management easier.

    • The unit and the front-camera are easy enough to do, just tuck the cables on your dashboard and pilar panels.

The rear camera is a bit trickier, so I hired someone from Airtasker. The guy had to pull apart a few panels and drilled a couple of holes to attach the camera permanently near the plate number. Once done, the cables are neatly tucked in and I don't even see it.

      • Drilled holes? 😲 Usually the cavities in the car are enough to route the cables through.

        • It’s to secure the rear camera to the car. Cable was easily routed and hidden within the panels.

    • On mine I just used a 3m length of yellowtongue joiner from Bunnings.

Pull the front door rubber off partially, and the rear hatch rubber off too. Then jam that yellowtongue all the way through over the headliner, with one end of the cable taped to it. Its so much easier than taking all that trim off.

Then its just the trim down the A-pillar if you can't just jam it in, and run across the bottom of the windscreen.

  • Thanks Op, got one. So does this connect to existing using bt or aux? Got an old one. Not sure if even got aux lol.

    • +1

It connects to your car via aux or fm signal. Would recommend aux if available.

Recommended to buy a new arm if you have the old design. I have one, replaced it with a phone holder arm. Old one suction cup melted into my windscreen. Not fun to clean

      • If you have an ancient car with CD player, CD slot holder goes hard, something like this

        • i have always been weary of these. Looks good but chances of it ripping out?

          • +1

@icedtiz: Have used one for 5+ years, never fallen out. The one I have is iOttie brand so a bit more pricey, but I’d be comfortable using a cheapie tbh.

Haven’t tried to play a CD since then though, if that’s a concern.

  • Out of stock

  • Mine was a dud. Had to send back as the charger was busted and also kept on freezing intermittently quite frequently. This is for the new version. What are their double din units like to replace the factory units on a Hyundai?

    • If actually going to the effort of replacing the head unit in an older car I would go with a head unit from Kenwood, Sony or Pioneer etc. Those brands all work well, connect wirelessly quickly and reliably, and would have better appeal for car resale.

  • Damn, good price, annoyed to have missed this one :(

  • +1

Apart from mostly AI generated and some fake reviews of these ATOTO units on Amazon, it's hard to know whether they are good or bad. I suspect they are ok for price but probably has dealbreaker sort of issues.
