Would Tesla Y Struggling Going up Kerb?

At the moment our Renault SUV has no issues, would Tesla Y struggle as I am not sure how much ground clearance is.

    Lol wtf.

Like when there is no parking at the school pick up hours, a lot of the cars have no choice but to park at across the school where is a a grass area but you need to drive up to park there. The only cars park there are SUV and Utes, never seen any small cars park there

      • +3

Oh, a curb, not a curve. I doubt a model y would have an issue, why not lookup the ground clearance and figure it out.

        • +28

Even after it’s been corrected the stupidity of the question is on brand for the OP

          • @Gunnar: Somebody's gotta do the shit jobs…

            • +1

@randomusername2017: Yet here's OP considering buying a new car after having their current car keyed.

              • +4

@ihfree: Sure there will be at least 100 similarly riveting posts detailing the purchase process…

                • +3

                  @randomusername2017: Some potential highlights:

                  • do I use novated leasing despite not knowing how it applies to me and my personal circumstances (or providing any info on these)

                  • something about a contract dispute with the dealer because I didn’t read it properly

                  • I had a flat tyre owner and the dealer will not fix it under warranty

      • +14

It's illegal to drive onto the curb. Especially around a school.

          • +50

@Aerith-Waifu: Park further away and walk the same as the rest of us parents had to do for many years…

Which school is it so I can report it to the council?

            • -1

@jv: If children are of very young age … then hey, you just made your "daily step count" …
no need to try squeezing in going to the GYM yourself +++ you get to spend extra time with your kids, interaction/etc (and ask how their day went).

If children are slightly older … they can form a walking group with other kids in same class - and walk to a specific location together alittle bit away from school (hey that's what we did when in roughly year 5 onwards … many many moons ago) … then pickup kids from there.

            • @jv: JV , “you’ve done it again”.

            • -3

@jv: Nope cant do that, clear signs of no parking on the streets on any near streets

            • @jv: jv doing "gods" work
              .

          • +8

@Aerith-Waifu: Express your concerns to the school, calling out other parents behaviour and also act in a manner that you wish others to portray.

Act entitled like so many other parents at the school and also not care about the welfare of other children, only your own.
I also expect double parking, stopping in the middle of intersections, U-turns and 3-point turns so you can save yourself a minute whilst endangering children.

            • +2

@roguescholar: You forgot the classic ‘park in the school hours No Stopping zone’.

          • @Aerith-Waifu: I rarely got picked up from school, but would be picked up around the corner if the moon aligned

          • +4

@Aerith-Waifu: When I went to school, we all rode our bikes or walked.

            • @xylarr: Kids are soft these days. They'd ride their electric scooter and complain that it's uphill. Back in my day all I had was a single speed push bike and it was uphill both ways with a strong headwind.

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Answer: not drive up onto the curb!, duh!

        • Consider yourself luckily to have 50 parkings my kids school has 10 and no drop off area. We always park in the neighbourhood and walk if it's raining heavily. For others who live further away they do the same. I assume it's the same for other schools.

        • +1

This and driving on the (profanity) foot path around schools. I have made many complaints - they actually got a few highway patrol cars and council one morning and fined the shit out of everyone. Hopefully OP was one of them :)

Once I had a car coming behind me on the footpath as I was taking my 2 primary kids back to the car from the school.

      • The Model Y is definitely not a small car

      • +1

        Sounds like it needs petrol

    • Why is OP mounting the kerb ???

Regardless of clearance its a great way to damage your car and knock out wheel alignment.as well

      Just dont do it OP!

  • Going up a curve?

    • -3

      Curb! Bloody auto correct! LOL

      • +5

        Please, it's a kerb

        • +7

          Kerb your enthusiasm

  • +4

our Renault SUV has no issues

Apart from the deep scrape along the bonnet

    • -1

And the BMW X5 behind us………….

  • +1

    Curb?

  • Not at all

    • -2

      Speaking from experience?

  • No, just approach it at an angle

    • -1

      Do you have one?

      • +6

        A curb or a Tesla?

        • +6

          and angle…

      • +3

Pro tip. Go fast. You'll make it over the curb at least once

  • +12

Sometimes I wonder, getting older I'm starting to lose it.
Not comprehending, I suspect a lot of the time it's not me.

    • +7

I often wonder how some people are still alive.

    • +5

      It's not you.

For some people, the internet as unleashed what in the before times was called the inner monologue.

    • No, it’s other people who are losing it.

  • -1

the Y is pretty heavy so if you bottom out it will bottom out HARD

    • -5

      Meaning?

      • +14

        it will bottom out HARD.

  • has about this much room

    is the curb higher?

    • What device is this measurement on? Doesn’t look legal on my ipad.

      • in classic america style i used m&m

        the only way to measure!

    • Now i have to measure and report back

  • +4

    Curb your enthusiasm

  • Model Y wheel/tyre is probably 700mm diameter and the kerb will be no more than 150mm so it will illegally mount with the ease of a 4WD. Just go easy to avoid pinch flats and rim damage

  • +3

    Kerb!

  • A corolla will go up a standard curb/kerb/curve…….

    • +1

Actually, the current generation one has a long front, making it very prone to scrapes. Luckily I learnt that lesson in a rental one before I picked up my one …

  • buy ford F450 instead. made for purpose.

    • -2

No, this is only when we need my dad to pick it up the kids, he is now thinking getting a Y instead of a 3

      • +1

Just get your dad a Hummer or Unimog. Problem solved.

      • just a bad joke. did you see the size of f450? from halfway to the back it's the size of a truck it has 4 tyres at the back. 😂

      • Specifically to climb kerbs?

  • +3

This must be a new way of telling people you own/are buying a Tesla. Don't forget to hook up a small box trailer and tow it around everywhere just to prove a point that electric cars can tow as well.

  • +1

Probs just do a test drive? the model 3 is pretty low - I try to avoid driving it up kerbs, steep driveways etc

But then the 3 is not the same car as a Y

  • The battery is under the car and if you damage it may catch fire and the batteries will pop like firecrackers. If you want to do it, get someone to watch from the side. Seriously you don't want an EV to catch fire, it's impossible to extinguish without a good deal of cooling.

  • -2

Do you know Tesla is almost 2X heavier than your Renault? Their Tyres are not premium Tyres but very expensive due to their odd size. Do you want your Tesla to get sunk in park soil due to its weight and want your Tyres to be damaged? Just wake up, park your car away from school and let the kids and you walk. Also, why don't they use public transport and walk the way we used to do it. Australian cities is very safe and comfortable to travel, especially during that time of the day.

  • +3

I dunno if tis come here for the bargains, or come here for the WTF these days….

  • Put it into low range, lock the center diff and floor it up the curb. Helps if you drop your tyre pressure down to 18psi or less for extra grip.

  • Going up a kerb to park on a road related area sounds a little like breaking road rules… InB4: "bUt aLL tHe oThEr PaReNtZ dO iT!!1!!" or "wHeRe eLsE aM i SuPpOsEd tO PaRk!!1!"

    • +3

InB4: "bUt aLL tHe oThEr PaReNtZ dO iT!!1!!" or "wHeRe eLsE aM i SuPpOsEd tO PaRk!!1!"

      Youre late!

  • -1

Even in a 4x4 i would try to avoid driving up a kerb if i need to i go up a driveway then turn. In the past even driving trucks with considerable higher wheel diameter i would avoid kerbs though lots of streets poorly designed turning circle.

Yes car suspension is pretty tough but you try to avoid treating your car like that less wheel alignments required etc.

Thats just looking after the vehicle let alone damage to nature strip and legalities in your area.

  • Public transport is out of the equation???

  • Here's some numbers.
Renault Koleos: 27° approach angle, 93cm front overhang, 19cm ground clearance
Tesla Model Y: 18° approach angle, 87cm front overhang, 17cm ground clearance
Hope this helps with the school run. Maybe you'd need to measure the kerb? lol

    • How high is a standard curb?

      • My spouse used to impose a $50 delegated authority, to curb my spending habits

  • What a noob. Should walk into the principal's office and asked whether they can spare a dedicated spot for you on school ground. Your kid will not even need to walk out to the gate.
