Cost of Respray a Car Bonnet? (Renault SUV with Metallic Paint)

Anyone work in the industry and can share the costs of respraying a car bonnet?

Someone used a car key to key my car Renault Metallic SUV and I didn't want to go through insurance yet. The damage is quiet deep and I can easily feel it with my finger nails.

How long is a piece of string?

    • -1

well, the mark is around 30cm, broken off a bit, and another 30cm.

It happened at Victoria Park at night when we were having dinner. Another car owner a brand new BMW X5 in blue also got scratched as well, but his was on the side panel. Very long from his driver side all the way to the rear passenger side. Must be the same (profanity) who did it.

      • Get few quotes?

        • -1

I rang a few places and I got quoted the following:

          Place 1: Total respray $1500 + GST
          Place 2: Total respray $1300ish

          Bonnet Only

I thought its bit high but maybe it is this high nowadays?

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Did they say bonnet only or are you assuming they're doing only the bonnet? It would be normal to blend into the two guards at least for most colours and especially metallics.

Price is about what I'd expect but with blending.

          • -1

@Aerith-Waifu: ill do it for 500
but im stuck on an oil rig
ill send a courier to pick it up and ill spray it on the weekend.

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Wow, that's way too high, I know a mate who can do it for $900 cash in hand and a case of beer.

          • @Aerith-Waifu:

Colour matching to the other panels is going to be where the difference between an amateur and a pro come out.

You don't want this to be done cheaply, because you'll get a cheap result and you'll end up having to re-do it.

If it's a metallic paint then that probably complicates things as well. If it's anything like the Mazda soul red, it's like 3 layers and is hard to re-spray.

            • +1

@coffeeinmyveins: God I love that colour. Been lusting after it for a few years now. Instant neck swivel whenever I see a soul red Mazda.

              • @mjdau: I've got it. And it's beautiful. But it's a pain in the ASS

                • @coffeeinmyveins: "a pain in the ASS"
poor donkey, that sounds like animal cruelty
                  .

      • John Hughes might of gone on a drunkin rampage scratching cars and yelling he wont be beaten on value.

Bit in all seriousness, the quotes will vary widely.

I would be more concerned about finding a good quality panel beater that will do a good job matching over scrounging about a few hundred bucks.

        • -1

How would I know which one is good and which one is bad? Luck of the draw?

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Reviews and word of mouth.

No one is gonna get it perfect, but the quality will vary wildly so pick carefully.

How long is a piece of string?

      45cm

    • -2

What's the length of a piece of string got to do with the question?
OP gave enough info. for a qualified person to provide a pretty good estimate.

What's the length of a piece of string got to do with the question?

The point being, it can vary widely.
There is no one size fits all approach.

      • -1

enough info? OP didn't even share a pic or say how big it was

    • -3

      LOL exactly

OP can get some touchup paint from local auto parts store and do it themselves on the cheap…….

Or pay $$$ to a panel beater

If you want an accurate answer OP then stop being so lazy!

Take your car to a couple of panel beaters and get quotes.

      Problem solved

  • Just put it on the curve

      • No that ‘curve’ was intentional

    Bonnet or bonut?

    • Bonnet or bonut hood?

      • What about Enunk ? it's the engine trunk for the teslaratti.

    • +1

      bonut

How come a 2020 account knows about this 2015 meme and yet the 2015 account doesn't?!!

      • Because the post was made in January and the commenter came to being in October.

You seem to have two prices. They are close to each other so im gonna go out on a limb and say thats pretty much the going rate.

Maybe a mobile touch-up repair mob would do it cheaper, but they likely wont spray the whole bonut thingy.

Asked a few and none replied back

      • Don't go with a mobile touch up guy. In my experiences, the results have been sub par. They just don't have the equipment for anything but very minor problems. Take it to a paint shop. They should take at least 3 days to do a proper job.

I think it's more the expectations of a touch-up job. They're cheaper than a respray for a reason, and of course most mobile detailers aren't going to decline potential work.

    Cut & wax. It’s only a Renault

    • A renault is essentially Xtrail underneath. Made in Korea and not Made in China or Europe

      • -1

        .

Just cover it up with star wars stickers 🤔

    • That would work indeed!

    • light sabers?
      .

  • How do you know they used a car key?

    • Looks like a car key scratch, screw driver would do a lot more damage

      • What about a house key?

        • a lot of houses use smart locks which you can access via mobile phone.

ergo sum - a phone is now a key.

          a phone scratched the car.

  • Vinyle Wrap it black, that used to be the "go to" and "looked cool". If you want it all to match, do the bonnet, roof and spoiler/boot. That was also a trend a number of years ago.

Get touch up paint and fill the scratch. Let it dry. Get 2000 grit sandpaper and go over the scratch and ensure its smooth. Get 3000 grit sandpaper and do it again. Then get cut and polish and it will look like new again.

    • -1

I fixed a scratch on my old hyundai with some metallic model plane paint from a hobby store and then using a very fine brush to paint along the scratch.

no sanding as it was just a groove - which you want to fill.

    • -1

Good advice, didnt know you can actually do that with the sandpaper

  • -1

$500-$600 if you want to respray it, it might be fixable without resprays by a proper detailer. Or you can always get a same colour bonnet from a wrecker and change it over.

  • -1

If its metallic paint, dont go cheap as matching metallic is a bastard at the best of times.

  • +1

Just replace it with a carbon fibre bonnet.

  • -1

remove all remaining paint from bonnet to get the rusty rat look, it is a 'euro' after all
