Kitchenware Recommendations for First New Home

Hi all,

What's the best place to buy cutlery, plates, pots and pans, and kitchenware that is good quality and doesn't break the bank?

I prefer to do it all in one shop, but happy to buy from other shops if the price difference is great.

Thanks.

Just go to IKEA mate. You'll get everything you need there, and then as you grow you'll get better stuff over the years.

    • You'll get everything you need

And even some stuff you dont need!
Ikea and kmart get me everytime I swear.

      • that's by design!

If you're prone to impulse buying, go in with a list and stick to it.

      • Would it be best to buy separately or in sets?

probably just buy a decent set to suit say up to 4 people or more if you plan to have friends and fam over?

Even the low tier ikea plates/glasses will literally be lasting you years if looked after.

I bought a few 'fancy' glasses like highball glasses from kmart for serving up alcoholic drinks but although yeah they are cheap they crack SUPER easy.

Op shops might have some gems but IKEA if you want to do it all in one shop

For cutlery and crockery it depends on your aesthetic. If you want to replace breakages and accumulate more pieces over time - and prefer them all to be somewhat matching, I suggest the Cashmere (fine bone china) range from Maxwell & Williams. My favourite low-end cutlery is a Gordon Ramsay design from Royal Doulton but it's no longer made so I can't expand… annoying. If price is everything and matching place settings means nothing, definitely IKEA.

  • IKEA plates okay
Don’t buy pot and pans that are cheap, it stink af when on stove

You just can't beat Ikea for base level stuff, especially if you are looking for a one stop shop. For everyday use items in the kitchen (crockery, glassware, cutlery, etc.) they can be hard to beat even for "established" homeowners.

  • Just get by with what you currently have.

  • Set up a watch on Ozbargain via category or tag and see what comes up.

You could also check out some OP shops (especially in nicer areas or areas where people retire) and Garage sales. As an example, we picked up some Royal Doulton Hospitality plates from a caterer that was closing down.

  • Everyday - ikea (cheaper in sets, they just dropped the price). Same with cups, mugs.

If you're looking for dinnerware or something fancy, then it's about personal taste, cost, ability to shake off breakages and willingness to hand wash. Op shops, FB, auctions etc are the way to go here.

Cookware - you dont need to spend thousands but at least try for a half decent brand to prevent constant issues. See previous threads.

Cutlery - yeah look, this is up to you. My current set is a 1970s Rodd set from a deceased estate around the corner. That and some other stuff, I gave the family a fiddy. 🤷‍♀️

  • You can look into places like Harris Scarfe for kitchen/dining stuff. I picked up some things from there for my first home. Including a 42 piece 18/10 quality stainless steel cutlery set, the idea being that I’d never have to buy main cutlery pieces again.

Some things you buy cheap. Other things gou shouldn't skimp on.

Get good cutlery, cheaper plates. Good pots and pans, cheaper containers. Good knives, cheaper for other utensils.

Generally dont buy all at once if you can avoid it, youll end up spending a whole heap and may not end up using everything. Get the basics and build.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions appreciate it :D
