  • Nice. I was looking for one last night and ended up buying this - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CB33LW6Y No mention of it being certified but the price worked for me.

Whatever floats your boat! One of the few good things I can say about Amazon is their no frills return/refund policy when something does go wrong with a purchase (within a year or so anyway).

      • If I'd seen your post last night I would probably have gone for a certified cable.

Note: this and the other one linked by Orrelljet are only 20Gbps not 40Gbps

  • I am looking for a 1m usb C extension cable. Any suggestions?

    • I use a Fasgear extension for a Homepod - works well https://www.amazon.com.au/Extension-Fasgear-Extender-Compati…

        • I see it as $13.99. You might need to change your location to add it to cart and then change it back in checkout.

Edit: $13.99 is 50cm, but 1m and 1.8m are both available too

          • @CodeXD: I accidentally responded to incorrect post - was about your other post w/ 40Gbps cable. It might be solved by the same location change though. I just ordered two of the cables Remorhaz mentioned testing out below

@tolchok: I have one of them and they're also excellent. Funnily enough, my Crest cables just arrived. The 1m behaves exactly as expected with an Acasis USB4/TB3 enclosure - 2300/2600MB/s on a M2 Macbook Air. The 2m, single lane (USB4 20) provides "only" 1700/1700MBs.

  • I got this cable ( https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BF4H2NHN/ ) a couple weeks ago for the current sale price ($16.67) - it says it supports 40Gbps and also USB4 (and compatible with TB3/4) and 240W charging (note: it is 1.2m long)

Side note: to meet TB4 specs a cable longer than 1m needs to be active (not passive) so whilst all these cables might work fine with TB4 devices they don't actually support true TB4 protocol itself

I tried it out with my Acasis NVMe SSD enclosure with my Macbook Pro M3 and got the expected blinding speeds (same as the TB4 cable which came with the enclosure) (so the 40Gbps claim is likely correct). The cabe also works perfectly connecting to a thunderbolt dock (with USB PD charging) and also driving external monitor, etc. I can't test the 240W charging speed (I don't have any devices that support that) but I tested to 100W charging speed fine

    • That's exactly what I wanted a cable for - Acasis enclosure for my wife's Mac. The shorter Crest cable I mentioned (which I just posted) is $10 for 1m and does 40Gbps. Plumped for that for the enclosure but still grabbed a couple of 2m cables as they look to be decent quality and the 10Gbps equivalent is around the same money or sometimes a fair bit more.

      • If you're a Mac user you likely don't want to bother with the 20Gbps cables - Mac's only support 10Gbps or 40Gbps (not 20)

So with the 20Gbps cable and the Acasis enclosure you're only going to run at the slower 10Gbps (max 1000MB/sec read/write) rate, you need a 40Gbps cable to get closer to the NVMe's true speed (I get just over 2800MB/sec reads with mine with the 40Gbps cables)

    • Just realised I also have that cable (currently used for a Dell usb-c PD monitor). I originally bought it for my wife's OWC Thunderbolt dock (TB3) but it kept disconnecting so switched back to the original TB3 cable. The speed was great with an enclosure though. I might swap the 20Gbps Crest into monitor duty and keep the other as a fast spare for the enclosure.

Most cheap USB4 cables are barely up to specs and can easily stop working at Thunderbolt / USB4 speed once you use it with a little converter / extender. How long they work in USB4 mode properly is also questionable. I have one which only works intermittently, and it's a super short length, el cheapo USB4 cable (got a full refund).

A lot of cheap NVMe enclosures (~$10 or less ones) come with lousy quality USB 3.2 gen 2 cables. They don't work properly on some cases with front USB-C port (because there is already a cable from motherboard to the front USB-C port and that distance needs to be added to the total distance.

Lots of these cheap cables just coded the e-marker chip incorrectly (to trick the system to operate in USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 mode). However, on a Mac, for that rubbish USB4 cable I had, at times, it will detect the cable is rubbish and rather than doing Thunderbolt 4, it attempts USB 3.2 gen 2 (and sometimes even drops to USB 2). 90% of the time, when it tries USB4 mode, on a Mac or PC, it disconnects after copying over 2GB of data through the rubbish cable.

      • Just did some more tests. Ended up having the same finding as you.

Newer "cost effective" USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cables from AliExpress or AmazonAU struggle to maintain USB4 speed on Apple Silicon or PC with Intel Thunderbolt 4. Once a tiny adaptor (to convert the plug orientation) is put in, they all randomly disconnects. Old Thunderbolt 3 cable that came with a device years ago doesn't have the same problem (and that's running in Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 mode). If the data transfer is flaky at best on these cheap cables, is it really safe to put 240W through these cables?

A legit / proper Thunderbolt 3 cable works better than rubbish inferior USB4/Thunderbolt 4 cables.

    • Just ordered two of them, thanks

  • These cables from ebay and amazon always go to sh*t after being used for charging for a month or two

    • Which brand?

    • I usually buy ugreen - solid performers

      • I wouldn't purely rely on brands. An AliExpress seller included a USB 3.2 gen 1 cable with an Ugreen enclosure (despite listing shows USB 3.2 gen 2). It constantly disconnects on USB 3.2 gen 2 port. Had to get a different / proper cable. I don't rule out it is actually a rubbish Ugreen USB 3.2 gen 2 cable (too lazy to check it under a meter, since it is problematic, does seem to work okay with a USB 3.2 gen 1 port).

Anker was caught selling out of specs USB 3.2 gen 2 cables years ago and there is another cable maker which changed provider after the first batch received good review (the newer batches have problems and are inferior).

  • Would this work well with my U2723QE? The 1 metre included cable is too short

  • Looking for a 40Gbps 200W+ supported 1m+ cable with Magnetic tips and reasonably priced USB-C tips. Any recommendations?

    • +1

Those specs with magnetic tips? I'd say go search on Aliexpress. Not sure how reliable they'll be though.

    • Not sure why someone would neg this post?

      • +1

A lot of people are neg happy on this website unfortunately. Gave you an upvote to cancel out the neg 👍

      • Thanks for sharing this. Deferring the search until a future date when something better comes up to cover the static electricity issues.
