Home Security Camera 4G Data Usage Using Sim+Modem

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Seeking advice as to the amount of data (GB) a four camera + home base (e.g. Eufy, Orion, Ring) + doorbell security setup would consume on a monthly basis.

I want to review the captured footage on a daily basis, plus routinely check on the condition of my property.

As I spend a considerable amount of time interstate/internationally away from home, I purely rely on the convenience of my mobile phone’s 4G. I cannot justify the additional monthly payment of a fixed wireless broadband/NBN connection considering I’m home for less than half the month.

I’m therefore thinking the most cost effective way of running this setup is on a monthly pre-paid mobile or data-only 4G SIM (e.g. Vodaphone 40GB for $25/month) in an unlocked modem (e.g. Huawei B818 or similar), but I’m unsure how much data would be sufficient.

Further, and arguably another can of worms, are there any combo’s of mobile/data only plans and 4G modems proven to work (or not work) (e.g. Felix $40 Unlimited blocked by network)?

Any help from the OzBargain community is greatly appreciated. And yes, I know I am a stinge.

I have used Ring door bell with 4G once without any issue, it wasn't using that much data since it trigger based.

    Optus Choice Plus Data Plan
    20GB
    $12 per month

For 12 months, then $20 per month or as notified. Ends 04/08/24

There is also a leaptel $4 mth plan with 500mb monthly but the camera updates they push randomly eat the data pretty aggressively

    • Thanks @pjetson, but I did see quoted usage on Google could range between 520MB/mth-500GB/mth. Hopefully looking for someone who can vouch for a more specific figure. Thanks for the reply :)

  • After a month of use, x1 2k doorbell and x2 2k doorbells, setup & heavy use (trialling sensitivity, recording length and daily checking in whilst overseas) cameras consumed 12GB.
