Motorola Edge 50 Pro (5G 12/256GB) $999 + $300 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card @ JB Hi-Fi

570

I availed myself of this one last night at the Bourke St store in Melbourne, and it was as simple as that - Bought the phone, gift card free in the bag, no fuss.

Pretty good deal if you figure you'll spend $300 at JB at any point in the future, basically brings the pricetag down to $699.

I didn't press the issue of trying to see if I could apply the card to the phone in some way.

Swapped because I was sick of my Pixel 6 Pro's poor battery life on 5G, and the new Pixel 9 still uses a Samsung modem that's a notorious underperformer on 5G, and the new phone seems to be doing a great job so far.

Looked around and didn't see much I liked in the flagship market at the moment, so decided to save a bit of money and go with something a step below.

125W charging brick w/cable (and damn the speed is impressive), and a pretty shit case included in the box.

  • Also consider the ThinkPhone which occasionally goes on sale for $799: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/thinkphone-by-motorola-5g…

    Comparison: https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-thinkphone-…

    • Thinkphone over a year old now

      • +3

Beats the Edge in specs for most things that matter
        Slightly lower res
        Better CPU
        Better GPU
        Better Storage speed
Can do 4K 60 on the camera

Only thing that would give me pause is how many years of updates will it get.
As you say it's a year older, in fact just over, 15 months.

Still have my Galaxy S10+, probably my last Samsung phone as it only got ~3.5 - 4 years of security updates.
I really need to be seeing 5+ years of support. I don't like tossing out manufactured goods prematurely.
No good for the environment or the pocket.

If Fairphone5 wasn't so damn expensive and hard to get it would be on my shortlist.

        • +1

New Samsungs get seven years of support. Same with Pixel.

        • S10 got more updates than most 2019 Android phones.

Samsung and Google obviously have been the benchmark when it comes to support on Android phones. I personally think we should be getting 8+ years now. Especially those 2k+ price ones.

    • Camera setup is better on the Edge 50 Pro, if that's important to you…additional telephoto camera.

  • Finally decent software support at a price !

  • How's the performance?
Ive read it's slower than last yrs edge 40 pro

    • +1

I'm not a high performance user, but there's nothing noticeably struggling from a day of usage in terms of performance.

If you do a lot of gaming I'm sure it won't hold up, but for scrolling, streaming, etc. It's absolutely fine and the 7 series Snapdragon is better for battery life and producing less heat, I believe.

    • Here I am using an S20FE and having zero issues with performance. Surely this is overkill.

  • waiting for edge 50 fusion deal … don’t need speed but want longer software support and the g84 has been out for a while now.

    • Fusion is equivelant to a 2019 CPU, haven't seen any reviews of the fusion, but CPU is so and so. Been happy with my Edge 50 Pro.

    • fusion is always 50$ off at mobileciti. I don't know if that helps

    • +1

That seems too good to be true and probably is.

    • +1

I saw in an earlier post JB will either request you to return the gift card or cancel the card when you return the phone. If it is used the return amount will be deducted.

    • +1

And this is why we can't have nice things.

    • +1

I hope you try it and get perma blacklisted by JB

  • Wonder if they will price match and still provide gift card….

fark. i bought this phone on 16 july. anyone knows if i can get refund for price drop? tks

    • You might be SOL as their “unofficial” price drop guarantee is only 14 days. YMMV.

      • +1

Unofficially, I think it's 30 days, but it depends on who you talk to. Some store managers are kind enough to refund the difference if within a month. I've had mixed results however.

    • Depends how you bought it, some cards have price drop protection.

buy this deal and return the new phone with old receipt

      • +1

I dont think it’ll work that way for phone purchases, every phone purchase mentions on the receipt the IMEI attached to the phone. It’ll have diff IMEI and will get rejected. Trick only works for stuffs with no unique ID (eg. IMEI).

        • -1

Good to know. Worth a shot as you can return the new phone with new receipt so risk free

  • +1

The Pixel 9's Tensor G4 is said to utilise the newer Exynos 5400 modem used in Samsung's S24 series.

  • +4

~$950 + a $300 Mastercard GC which can be used anywhere from Mobileciti using their standard 5% off sitewide code

  • +4

Possible price match $860 to combine with the $300 GC. Australian model number

  • +2

Check it physically before buying. Curved display is too curved, just like the first Gen Samsung curved phones.

  • -4

At this price point you're better off getting the OnePlus 12 around $1150 for 512gb 16gb ram model.

    • +5

      that's $150 more with without a $300 giftcard

      • -1

But it's such a low quality phone for a grand

        • But it's functionally only $699, unless you wouldn't otherwise spend $300 at JB Hi-Fi in the future for any reason.

    • does oneplus use anything remotely like an oppo UI, cause that sucked big floppy donkey bits

  • S23 deal was better gents.

  • +1

been using this for a while now since launch. With the $200 gift card bonus with $100 bonus trade in and moto buds+ by redemption. can't complain so far

    • I remember posting that deal. I don't remember there ever being a $100 trade in bonus. How is the phone? Any issues or problems?

      • no probs whatsoever .. coming in from previous edge20, edge30 pro. occasional glitch solved by restarting the phone. used it for work with teams and outlook, handle the workload without any issue

  • HELL NO. pdd, equivalent AU$280

  • +1

This phone should be more of a fusion than pro, it is a step back rather than an upgrade and shouldn't cost more than $500. The older Moto Edge 30 Pro had Snapdragon Gen 1 CPU and UFS 3.1 storage, but this one has got inferior Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and outdated UFS 2.2 storage. The RRP of $999 in Australia is an insult to Aussie consumers as it costs the equivalent of $500-600 AUD elsewhere. Motorola has cut corners on this one and is trying to take us for a ride, I believe they should not be rewarded for this.

    • I mean, this deal is the equivalent of $699 for the phone.

Things cost more in Australia by default because we have significantly greater consumer protections here, so at $699 essentially, it's pretty reasonably priced given your parameters.

  • Snapdragon 7? Hard no.

  • +1

    G84 is such great value
    This is opposite

    • The G84 has a worse screen, worse processor, worse cameras, older Bluetooth, slower charging, no wireless charging.

Some of those things alone are compromises people aren't going to make, let alone all of them together.

      • So much heartache with a phone. Get this and be divine $79 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/860145

        • -1

Yes, that will be extremely effective at letting me take remote video calls and emails, letting me pull up spreadsheets and using verification apps for work.

          Good point.

I have an irresistible urge to correct the title on threads like this.

    It is not a phone for $999 plus a $300 gift card. That's like the equation phone = 999 + 300 : phone = 1299. It is a phone plus a $300 gift card for $999. That is, phone + 300 = 999 : phone = 699.

At a stretch it is a phone for $999, plus a $300 gift card. Note the presence of the comma. That's what punctuation is for. It doesn't leave you to figure out what someone else really means, it makes it clear.
