Can this emulate switch perfectly? (Disclaimer: own dump games backup- just in case nintendo lawyers are listening)

    • +1

It can play some Switch Games, but not as many as the Odin 2

Joey's Retro Handhelds video - Switch games on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro!

    • +1

Nah cannot play switch properly. Don't get this if you plan on playing switch.

    • +3

no. Nothing actually emulates a Switch properly other than.. a Nintendo Switch at the moment.

      • Genuine question, in in the market for something that does 3ds and POSSIBLY switch games, world the same advice apply? I had a look at the megathread sheets doc but honestly it's very overwhelming.

I'm a dad who made an agreement where they'd get a handheld once small child could read a certain amount and I wanna do right

to do 3DS properly you need something that is at least a Snapdragon 845 or better at full speed. A Snapdragon 865 will do about 1/2 the Switch games reasonably well (ie. 2D or not very complex 3D or latest stuff). The latest Snapdragon 8 gen 3 will do about 60-70% games in full speeds (but again, may struggle with latest or complex stuff). Also depends on emulator too - most people hate the reality that the best and most compatible emulator is the one they hate most (egg).

Your best bet is probably this deal tbh if you don't want to spend too much. Anything below this will struggle with Switch emulation. This will run mostly 2D Switch games at pretty good speeds from what I've heard.

Also be aware that the screen is landscape placement. So 3DS will be a bit dicky to get it right (usually you can manually size the "main" window bigger with the secondary to be smaller.

@bchliu: 3ds works fine on mine. Been playing the pokemon games without issue.

            • +1

@ONEMariachi: Yeah.. 3DS emulation is very doable these days even on the older SD845 and even the lower Mediatek Dimensity 700/900 ranges.. assuming you use Citra MMJ instead of the official branch which runs like crap on the low end.

              • +1

                @bchliu: Correct

                • @ONEMariachi: @bchliu @ONEMariachi thank you so much both of you for the feedback and education! Looks like I'm picking one of these up in a few months!

@Shroomlet: Your other alternative is the Odin 2 for about $150ish more, and sits about mid way in size between the retroid and the switch. It handles Switch way better than this does. Only real switch games I've had work reasonably on this are basic indys.

Something to conisder as well. is that ds/3ds games on this, if the second screen is very much required to play. You will either have 2 very small screens, or one good size, one tiny, or you are hot swapping between screens. So take that into consideration. Pokemon works completely fine, but games like professor layton are a bit of a challenge.
Also you won't get any speed up on this console with 3ds, if that is something you need for rpgs.

@Shroomlet: Actually forgot the elephant in the room in regards to the Switch:

if you are up for something a bit more expensive (which will ironically be more expensive than a switch) is to go up to a Steam Deck, GPD Win or something similar (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/games-consoles/handhel…). These will run with a laptop processor instead of a mobile one that allows better heat tolerance and hence better performance overall. You'll have to join a proper group to teach you a bit more on how to do this but the Windows versions of the emulators are usually much more advanced and will get you the cutting edge in emulation (among other devices it can also emulate and play PC AAA gaming too).

  • Too expensive for what it can do imo. Better off getting a second hand steam deck for a couple hundred more for that kind of money.

Either that or just buy a switch and a modchip.

I actually think that if you have money, having both isn't a terrible idea. This thing is far more portable and have far longer battery life. If you're buying road trip devices for kids or you only want something light cause you'll be standing all day, it's not a bad deal.

      • +2

I have both and they definitely both have their place. SteamDeck is a pain in the arse to travel with, which is why I got this one. Tiny profile that is super easy to take in a carry on bag. Steam deck takes up 50% of my 15L back pack. Steam deck is also way harder to play in bed for more than 10 minutes.

        • Surprisingly, I find the gpd win max 2 pretty good on the bed since you can rest it on your chest. I've been using that device the most.

But yeah, the miyoo mini is permanently in my bag for that reason.

    Cute but A$299.96 cute?

    • +1

The few of us that got one before for $250 got it good

  • Any idea what handheld console this is, seems to be preloaded with all the emulators and all the games:

    Apparently $150 from Paddy's markets.

Wouldn't mind something cheap for classic gaming, had a DS back in the day but wouldn't hold charge after a while.

    • +2

You wouldn't get an answer from here, any of these machines with preloaded games is where the grey line of piracy gets crossed.

That being said, looks like a rg36s. Which is 60 bucks.

  • Thanks was just interested to know. Been years since the old R4 sd card setups etc.

    • Hahaha that's where I bought my M3 from.. well from parklea but same concept lol
