Nearly Got Done by Some Ads

Saw some ads for a coat and socks. Saved the link to look up later.

Firstly was the coat from a store called monti-melbourne. First red flag was they left the E off the end of melbourne somewhere in description. Second red flag is the store has no reviews. Next step was a reverse image search on google/yandex which showed it was sold in 2023 on aliexpress. Price was $33 but that might be USD, so around $55 aud after GST. The sale price is $75 on this store. Not too expensive but it's a pass for me.

Second store is called nordic socks. I like the patterns and the use of merino wool (i've never had patterned socks before). But online reviews and discussion do not paint them in a good light.

There seems to have been a US version in the past selling the same product but I can't be 100% sure. Some discussions do describe the exact same material makeup though. Reviews for the AU store say it wears down fast.

Has anyone had experience with these stores? I would like to find similar patterned socks but higher quality. I don't mind paying for quality, I know full merino socks are usually around $30+ a pair.

    OPs first Facebook advertising.

Sooooo… you’re saying they buy stuff from AliExpress, make a website and try to sell the stuff for significantly more? Sounds like OzBargain to me… A play straight out of the “Facebook entrepreneur” group’s playbook.

Been on the internet since at least 2016… Congratulations to your parents, they must have some impressive controls in place 🤔

I liked your last forum post where you were starting to get worried if something you bought was still going to be delivered after 2 years & 4 months, lol.

The legends say op still waiting on those key caps till this day

    • @FiveDarrah Did you get your Rama keycaps?

      • No. There was an update about them finding a new manufacturer and some backchannel stuff about this being substantiated. I'm too busy at the moment to go through NCAT at the moment but that is basically my next step.

    • Lol that was not the point of the post, why are you going through my post history to bring this up?

As per the title - I was looking into specific steps to take.

In the keyboard hobby, projects often take a long time. It's not normal or good, but it happens. You may never have had this experience and that's fine. Don't laugh at me when i'm trying to get some advice. Mate.

  • I've bought those nordic socks. Don't bother :-(

    • What was it that you didn't like?

The main things I saw repeated was: stiffer than expected, thinner than the marketing materials make it out to be and inconsistent sizing.

      • Exactly those things and not as warm as advertised. I don't know where the merino is in them. The Damart ones are much warmer and softer. The Damart ones are purple with a snowflake pattern and the 2nd pair that came with it is grey with a darker pattern - not as pretty, and pretty dull, but warm and comfy.

  • You'd be better off buying the thermal socks from Damart with the pretty snowflake pattern. I got 2 pairs for $14.99 a couple of months ago on special and they're great and very warm and no noticeable toe seams when wearing them.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, looks like they only have one version/colour available atm.

  • Nordic socks is a real (non scam) site; the socks are so/so - they arent very thick but they do seem to be merin. I would take them as fashion socks rather than winter socks. They cost around $14 each and that isnt particularly outrageous but perhaps slightly high. You can get identical looking socks off Temu etc for a lot less but they arent necessarily merino wool (more cotton, poly etc). I'm sure you can find something similar on Temu etc for cheaper like most things

    • I don't think either site is a scam. The photos and marketing just got me good because it's something that I do want. Often you won't know you want something til it's shown, we are all human, no one is immune to psychology and marketing.

For the jacket, it looked cool (and warm) and was a good price. As for the socks, I have never considered patterned socks but their ones looked comfy and cozy.

  • Nordic socks?

    https://www.nordicsocks.com.au/collections/regular-socks

69 bux on the website you mentioned, 8 bux on AE.

Got some last week actually, probably OK for $8, total rip off at $69. :)

    • just because the socks look the same doesnt mean they are the same..the aliexpress ones at best are 35% wool vs nordic socks at 79% merino

      • I was going for the fashion appeal. Once the chicks see me wearing those socks they won't care what they're made from. :P

Most confusing thread ever. Is OP trying to buy… socks?

Did I just read an entire thread about sock drama?

    I want my click back.

      click

    • Me too - but I clicked in twice.

Ah who am I kidding I’d just waste it anyway

  • If you're after Merino sock recommendations, I've seen Darn Tough or Smartwool socks recommended. I have a few pairs of Ice Breaker socks.

    • I've actually tried multiple different ones from all three of those brands. I've just never considered patterned in that style, plus that site had a lot of variety.

I wasn't in the market for new socks until I saw them.

      • I can thoroughly recommend Wilderness Wear. Made in Melbourne.. If you can, visit their factory in Preston and you can choose from a selection of factory seconds at a significant discount.

  • I've taken to pretty much dismissing anything advertising to me on Facebook as a general rule.

As stated above, a crafty entrepreneur creates a flash website to then drop ship from an Alibaba supplier often with a small tweak or two to the base product.

Classic one recently that almost got me was Northbound gear.. I was looking for fleece lined cargo pants, within a week their ad appeared and the product looked good, great reviews of course … but digging deeper and you can find them on AliExpress for 1/4 to 1/3 of the price delivered.. but the NB ones feature additional tailoring to customise the leg length and have ankle zips/drawstrings added.

I figured nordic socks was probably similar given the bombardment of advertising and the way they market them…

Lesson learned op, DYOR, which you did..

    • Yes I do as well as a baseline. It's not always bad though. I guess my post is just a reminder to stay vigilant.
