The most exciting thing about this deal is that winter is coming to an end.

    • Yeah last week was like the coldest I think. Don't know if it's cheaper in summer. My Aldi jacket is still decent.

So you can start whinging about the heat ? I’ll gladly take all your winters .

I am looking for a replacement hiking jacket.
This jacket looks like it would get too hot once the blood is flowing. Anyone able to confirm?

Comes down to layers underneath also, but it's fine for me fast walking etc

    • +1

I can confirm, you will get very hot.

Thanks mate. I will keep soldiering on with my Mountain Warehouse 3 in 1 jacket. Or wait for them to have a good sale for a replacement.

  • 600 loft is actually worse than a good synthetic like climashield apex.

Would love to see your source for this. Worse in what way? Eg. Warmth for weight, durability, etc.

I'm inclined to agree with svartr… warmest jacket I have is my high quality synthetic. I was reluctant 10-11 years ago when I bought it (about $300) but it's still ridiculously warm today.

I don't have any one-for-one experience where I took this one off then put a 600 loft jacket on, but whenever my life has been at risk due to extreme cold, it's this particular synthetic that I reach for.

Experience: spent cumulatively at least a year of my life camping/trekking/hunting/etc with overnight sleeps outdoors in subzero conditions and I really don't cope with the cold well.

600 fill power down actually has a higher CLO (i.e. insulating value) than Climashield Apex. See:

      https://outdoorcrunch.com/clo-values/

Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of synthetic and it is better than down for certain applications e.g. active use, in wet conditions, etc. My Arcteryx Proton LT (earlier versions use Climashield Apex) remains one of my favourite pieces.

However, when it gets really cold and I am not moving, give me the instant warmth of a down jacket any day. Down is also lighter, packs down smaller and retains its loft over time.

  • Are these good enough for -20 degrees? (thinking of traveling to poles in the Au summer)

    • how would you be travelling to poles?

      • well, flying to some nearby cities, not to the center of the pole perhaps

  • I purchased the Macpac Men's Halo Down Puffer Jacket 2 months ago when it was on special.

Very comfortable and warm. It looks expensive.
