      I read the beatles initially recorded in mono, so the record would sound better on crappy mono players, that was all a 16 year old could afford at the time.

        more that they would personally supervise mono mixes with the producer, while stereo mixes would often be left to younger studio hands. But your notion about the young audience playing on their portable mono record players is pretty spot on, which is why in general those early 60s mono cuts punch that bit harder.
