  • Great unit, not as resonsive as ring, but works.

  • +20

Can personally vouch for this being the worst doorbell I've ever tried!

Only rings once with a single chime when pressed and sometimes over a minute after it's been pressed, to which it can't even load the live footage for :)

    • +2

It's a shame, mine is like this but it wasn't always like this (at least not with the firmware it shipped with a few years ago)

      • +3

Google seems to have given up on Nest products. Even the Nest hub and mini are becoming dumber by the day. Have to repeat multiple times for it to perform a task.

        • +5

Can agree with the nest hubs. I don't know what's happened with them, but the quality over the past year has dramatically decreased on those units. It's like they just gutted the backend and left it on life support. They're barely functional at the best of times.

Made me realise not to buy Google products in future.

          • @dottjt: This is all google home products. They are trash now

          • @dottjt: I thought it was just me but I have the doorbell and nest cameras 3 set and they are shocking. Wired home security system is the way to go at a relatively similar price.

  • +19

Sounds like a good camera but the crippleware 3 hours event recording without a subscription is a straight out scam. If they gave you the same tech but allowed local storage it would be fantastic.

    • +4

I swear the retainment length used to be longer. It was a week when first released, then a day and now 3 hours. Really pushing hard for the subscription. I have this alongside the wireless nest camera and I am ashamed to say that I do pay for the sub these days.

      • +8

They locked you in eco system first and they make you pay. Google should combine subscription fees if youtube/nest /drive to encourage, I heard in US prime users get free storage for unlimited photos too along with ring and other amazon benefits

        • +1

If you buy enough cameras i think the subscription is worth it. 10 cameras 30 days storage is alot of data.

    • +1

You expect a conglomerate that specialises in cloud data to give you local storage access on their products? Riiiiight.

      • +1

        imagine simping for google

  • +7

Yeah, you're far better off getting Eufy E340 if you want an unwired one with the most features/largest field of view. Or Reolink wireless if you want the best quality 24/7 door bell camera but it needs wiring. Both of them will be free of a monthly subscription fee.

  • +27

Have to pay subscription for more than 3 hours of recording.

Not 3 hours total footage, 3 consecutive hours ie. If it's 5pm right now, footage from before 2pm gets deleted.

    Rubbish.

    • +6

      omg. That's appalling.

      • +2

        Learned new word. Thx

        • -1

That's actually very interesting to me. Are you ESL?.Or maybe the younger generations aren't using the word these days. I'm an old guy. 😂

        • +1

I hope the new word you learned is not "that's". 😨

  • +1

    Awesome door bell.

How odd. Response time is instant for me. Big double storey house with an old Asus Ac5300.

    • As long as your router is near, it works great. Luckily I have existing chime linked. But notification on androd phone is delayed, but iphone notifications come instant.

      • Bizarre that it’s slow on Android but instant on iPhone.

Unfortunately only iPhones in my household though Google home minis receive the notification instantly.

        • +1

I turned off notifications to home devices except 2 in main areas. My house used to go crazy when someone rang the doorbell with all the home devices.

    • Great door bell. Instant notifications on both Android phone and Nest speakers. The video takes a few seconds to automatically load the video on the Nest displays tho when the doorbell is first pressed, but we have several Nest displays in the house that all load at the same time. It's still fast enough to see who it is before going outside. Our doorbell is on our gate that's a bit far from our house and is in full elements. It connects to a Nest Pro mesh point.

The facial recognition is good when it works but it's not always accurate. We've been tagging our delivery and Aus Post ppl too, but you don't really need to since the doorbell lets you know there's a "person with package" if they're carrying a package anyway. We like how it keeps track of the package left at the gate and it notifies us if someone then takes the package away. We have the subscription with other security cameras too.

      • Did your postie agree to be tagged on your device?

  • Subscription model of this is horrendous, however the smarts/integrations are decent with Google home and nest hubs. Would recommend using this for doorbell and live view only, paired with a better CCTV system with local storage.

    • +1, I have this and swan NVR. which eliminates need of subscription

  • What's the difference between this one for sale and this one on Amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Google-Nest-Doorbell-Battery-Wirel… ?
They appear to have the same functionality.

    • +1

it’s the same thing. that one is third party seller so higher price.

      • +1

        Thank you!

  • +1

Yeah i got one. Google home is a mess to review footage. 3hrs etc

Also, doesnt ‘call’ your phone just notifies.

    • Yeah it's much better with the subscription but the subscription isn't cheap if you only have one device for it.

For getting your phone to 'ring', you can set up your phone to ring or read out specific doorbell notifications using Samsung Routines or similar for your phone, or by using third party apps like Automate, Tasker etc.

  • +4

The Eufy one is much better and has no subscription.

    $195 at Bunnings.

  • Anyone know any that are Home Assistant compatible that are wireless?

It's a bit hard for us to put in a wired/PoE one (not impossible I think, just expensive) and not sure which are good with HA

  • +2

$172 @ Kogan (with Kogan First) OR $179 (without Kogan First) + Shipping
    Sold & Shipped by Kogan
May be a tad cheaper if you are willing to wait for shipping compared to Amazon Prime

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/google-nest-wire-free-doorbell-…

    • Does OW price match Kogan?

  • +1

    PM with OW

Think doorbell cameras with subscriptions are going the way of printers a few years ago. Drop the price of the printer/doorbell camera and bump up the price of ink & toner refills/subscription price as recurring income is more important. Ring I got a couple of months ago is good but I regret not just getting a no subscription one.

  • Been using Google doorbell pro (wired) for over 5 years now, still working great, however agree that it will be great to have local storage. I am pretty get used to Google nest integration with Google home hub

Haven’t used many other door bells other than 1st gen Ring doorbell though

  • What are some other similar doorbells (other brands), which don't need subscription to record hours of footage?

    • +1

      Eufy

      • Ubiquiti - amazing ecosystem

  • +1
    • Slow to ring on the Google hub once someone pushes the button. About 5 seconds.
    • Mine sometimes flickers between light and dark brightnes.
    • The fastening plate and nippple is a terrible broken broken design. Mine requires olive oil to even work at all.
    • Does not work without internet, not even with a internal nest hub/display
    • People constantly go to push the black camera circle thinking it the button as it the most promient feature of an all white device.
    • occasionally disconects from wifi, even though it about 4 meter from the wifi router

~ ok battery. Mine gets roughly 2 months with not much movement at the front and a pretty limited zone.
~ $120/yr for longer than 3hr of recording.

    • USB C charging port (unlike the outdoor camera which has a proprietary connection)
    • Finally google has a webpage for home cameras, home.google.com. This was long overdue
    • It appears you got a faulty one or has issues. Mine is fine i love it with no issues, aside from a 5 second delay which is a known issue but it's ok for me. I bought a solar panel that charge the doorbell. I don't need a subscription because I'm using eufy ecosystem. I only chose the Google doorbell because of the live view integration in the Home app and the Google nest hub.

    • Slow to ring on the Google hub once someone pushes the button. About 5 seconds.

      yeah this Imo is inexcusable

      • -2

For me it's an advantage. While waiting for a response, I can speak to the person using my phone. and after 5 seconds the bell rings and i can hear it while using my phone. Or i can chat with them on the nest hub or my TV using google Chromecast. While other doorbells might be app specific, this doorbell is good if you know how to use it.

On the other hand, the google indoor camera is good as well. I can chat with my family anytime I want while on break. I can see them and interact live, and hear them clearly with no delays.

  • +2

Got this $124 from last Officeworks sale. It's a great live video and parcel delivery checks etc and to check that I closed my garage door … Because you know I never remember closing it when I leave.

  • +1

Google just makes terrible software. The hardware side fares better.

    • +1

Google is terrible at software? I thought the other way around lol

      • The Ai part of it isnt the best, I suspect they are cheaping out on processing time to recognise voices etc.

    • hardware credit should go to nest team.

  • -1

Don't buy this, get the Tapo doorbell instead. I've tried both.

    • +1

Was tempted to get a tapo but being a doorbell its nice that it perfectly integrates with my nest homes. Thats the only reason i picked the nest over something else.

  • +1

WTF i was going to buy one yesterday for a relative but I was told to wait for a sale, I thought these hardly ever go on sale, but was going to buy today anyway! Amazing timing!

  • Import the new wired version
    Much better

  • for those who have it, Google releases special ringtones during Christmas & Halloween period, kid loved it.

  • At this point, I bet you went past all the negative comments, as for the positive comment, I never had any issues with it and love it with the subscription, and if you are into the Ring ecosystem, Ring is slightly better.
Good notification and don't need to worry about any storage or remove backup.

  • +2

Hot tip, even though it's battery version if you can get 12v over your old bell wires to it, it'll keep it charged.

  • Ive been waiting for the wired 2nd Gen to arrive for more than a year since renovations.

With my home mini just glorified bluetooth speakers, im happy with people using the old school twisting bell on my security door

    • this is on wired and battery powered. I had wired to my existing doorbell and works great with my chime.

      • Was also hoping for upgraded camera hardware on 2nd gen

  • Just PM at OW at $172. So $163.40. Thanks Op!
