They have the 256gb one on sale too, $1699? which is $1897 in officeworks -

Arent the snapdeagon ones pretty much useless though? do not run x64 standard windows applications, only stuff from the store? (ARM processor)

    • +2

they "can" try to run anything, just not everything runs.
I will perfer a surface 7 plus instead of this thou

      • +6

I have the Surface Pro 11 and have been able to install and run pretty much everything I've tried so far. The only things that didn't install were Mullvad VPN and Google Drive desktop. Oh and I had to disable EAC when trying to run 7d2d on Steam.

It's a great device so far, but I've only had it for a week.

I'm sure more issues will arise in the future, but I'm okay with that as it's a secondary device for basic tasks I need to do when I travel for work.

FYI: Don't buy this for the "AI" features. They're largely useless.

        • +7

I'm not a fan of this baked in AI gimmick in everything at the moment. Hopefully it fades off after the hype has passed

          • @Sammyboy: Nor am I. Even though I use AI tools, like LLMs, frequently.

I've found it to be a great device, but I mainly just wanted something faster than my 7+ and with better battery life. It ticks both boxes.

FYI, Forbes has an article where they tested the gaming performance here.

Obviously you wouldn't want to buy it for this, but IMHO the results seem pretty impressive.

          • +4

@Sammyboy: I'm actually all for NPUs/on-device ML. If everyone has a decent amount of ML performance on devices, hopefully vendors will put more development into local models, rather than cloud stuff.

The more stuff that's done locally, the less of a subscription our lives will be. I'm all for that lol.

            • @incipient: "The more stuff that's done locally, the less of a subscription our lives will be"

I'd love that too but the trend towards subscriptivising everything isn't going away any time soon. 3rd party devs could be inspired to make apps which wouldnt be subscription but seems a long way off any great shifts.

            • +1

@incipient: Even if it's local, premium features could still be locked behind a paywall

Arent the snapdeagon ones pretty much useless though? do not run x64 standard windows applications, only stuff from the store? (ARM processor)

That was the case a few years ago, but now Windows on ARM has the Prism emulation layer that can run standard x64 applications.

Not every single app will work, but most of them do. Even some AAA games work, although these devices are definitely not gaming laptops.

For people who do "everyday work" with e.g. a web browser, MS Office, Zoom/Teams, native ARM versions are available so that's not an issue anyway.

tried x86-64 emulation windows 11 on Raspberry PI 4B 8GB back in early to mid 2023 worked ok with various apps

    • Do you know if officeworks or jbhifi will price match this? Or will they refuse because emporium electronics isnt a big retail shop?

      • +1

JB Hi-Fi won’t. Some people have been successful at Officeworks, others have been knocked back.

I managed to get Officeworks to price beat, but I went when the Emporium Electronics sale first started. Wonder if they’ve been instructed by head office to stop matching Emporium because Officeworks must be selling below cost at these prices.

        • +1

Just got a price match yesterday 👍

          • @XCelR8: I just got denied in-store, I'm thinking of trying another officewsworks. Did you call up or head to a physical store? Do you mind sending me a receipt if possible? You can hide any sensitive info if you want, i'm sure if I bring a receipt next time it would help me heaps 🙏

        • I just tried today in-store but got denied :( Do you mind posting a receipt here or maybe DM it to me if possible? Would really like to get one of these surface pros to finally replace my macbook, i'm so sick of macOS lol

          • @tofusana: They had to check the website, put it in their account and then check the stock matched. I dont know where my receipt is but mine was in Perth, told them i drove up from down south as they had none in stock but gave me a price match haha. Ill check it out for you.

Better buy a MacBook Air at this price.

    • +1

This price for Surface is a joke.
This is not a 2k laptop.

      • What is a 2k laptop? New ipad ?

    • +2

Different people have different needs, Macbook Air not necessarily a better deal or better option.

By the way, just to remind everyone interested in this, it is X Plus, not X Elite, evaluate your needs and choose wisely.

  • stop dragon your feet and snap up this deal!

    !!! Wow!!!

  • +1

Props to the op, looks like a good discount but I can't help but feel the previous gen might be a better buy at this point. Proper processor and less co-pilot garbage baked in.

    • +9

You don't have to use anything copilot-related.
The battery life on this would be much better than the previous gen if mobile use is important.

      • +1

not using and not baked in are not the same.

        • +3

How does the presence of something you don't use affect you?

          • @eug: You don't have to use something for it to be baked in. Case in point, recall was originally on by default before all the backlash.

Maybe you could turn it off, but now your argument is different.

            • +1

              @Osiris:

Case in point, recall was originally on by default before all the backlash.

Yes, it's great how the software preview system works. The point of announcing it before the preview is released is to collect customer feedback and make changes. As they said back in May when they announced it:

"Recall is currently in preview status," Microsoft says on its website. "During this phase, we will collect customer feedback, develop more controls for enterprise customers to manage and govern Recall data, and improve the overall experience for users."

Of course, sensationalist reporting would rather let everyone think Microsoft was going to release it as-is, in its pre-preview state.

        • +3

          Turn it off then.

If you are still annoyed about Windows 11 having AI capabilities, now is probably a good time to learn Linux.

        • True, Siri and soon Apple Intelligence will also be baked into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. What’s your take on this?

By the way, ApplePay, GooglePay all baked into mobile systems, but you are free to choose not to use.

    • IIRC, it's baked into windows and just can't be enabled(without hacks) on lower spec devices.

If you want to avoid baked in co-pilot, you'd need to avoid windows.

      • Siri is baked into macOS, iOS, etc., pretty sure Apple Intelligent will be too.

If any of these AI a serious concern then go Linux, make sure you choose a distro best for your use.

  • I am guessing keyboard and pen at extra cost?

    • Absolutely. Add another $500 or so.

      • +1

The flex keyboard is ridiculously expensive, but you can use the older keyboards too.

I spent 230 all up. 170 for a Microsoft Surface signature keyboard and 60 for a Renaisser pen.

  • for two grand I'd want a keyboard included.
