It's salty in the bat cave.

      • +8

        too much RAM

        • Can't we get this with 4GB RAM? That'll be more than enough…

      • +1

        Yes.

Okay, quoting OP: “Only 8GB ram in 2024” blah blah blah.

      • +2

more shocking is the +$300 for only 256gb extra SSD in 2024

      • Lol… proceeds to open Blender, Lightroom, and a bunch of browser tabs simultaneously.

If you need Blender or Lightroom, don't buy this laptop. Jezz.
If you're just using Microsoft Office and Safari, go for you.

    • +1

I came for the 8gb RAM.

      • +3

Nobody comes for 8gb. I need at least 32gb to climax in this day and age.

    • -8

macOS can handle anything with 8gb

      • +14

Only Apple fanbois would say that.

    • I mean, be prepared for your MacBook to freeze and restart with 8gb.

I have a M1 MBP and that's exactly what it does.

      • Sounds under-specced for whatever you're doing and/or faulty.

        • Yes , probably “made on a Friday“

Hey Siri, play Here I go Again by Whitesnake.

pulled the trigger too early last week at $1609…

Call them, they might refund the difference

    • true if you buy from apple i think you have 2 weeks to return it did the same with the m2 air bought it and got delivered a week before m3 air release so i went to apple and they took it back and got the m3

    • I bought at OW… do you think there’s any chance?

      • Nope

      • +5

Buy a new one, return it on the old receipt🤷‍♂️

        • Would they check serial numbers?

        • Wouldn't they see it had been opened?

          • +1

@BluebirdV: You’ll have a brand new one that you return on the old receipt.

If it doesn’t work, you return the brand new one on the new receipt and you’ve lost nothing.

      • I think they offer a price guarantee. Definitely worth a check.

    • +7

I went into the store I bought it from and the manager approved the refund in difference! Great from OW and thanks for suggesting!

  • +4

I have 64GB RAM. Still not enough 😂

    • +10

That's a lot of porn tabs.

      • +1

163 tabs to be exact. BUT it's not porn though

        • +1

          Yea right….

        • +3

          you are wasting 64GB ram

          • +2

@ChipsChicky: what should I use it for instead then

            • +2

@itsfree: 19.76 cached files. Room for at least another 80 porn tabs

              • +1

                @ihfree: i guess i gotta make use of this 16-inch display somehow…

                • +6

@itsfree: @itsfree and @ihfree speaking to each other hurts my head.. my brain probably needs more RAM to not pause and read the names

            • +3

              @itsfree: AI, AI, AI.

And maybe some virtual machines for Windows and Linux.

Or for playing games via Wine/Crossover/Whisky.

        • Then you're just a ram whore.

          • +1

@SimAus007: I'm looking into upgrading soon too 😁

            • +1

@itsfree: But you don't need more than 8GB, believe me…

    • -3

      Because it is Windows. …

      • +1

That looks like Activity Monitor in macOS

      • +1

haha nope - running macOS. Although I do sometimes have Win 11 via Parallels running in the background too

  • +6

Nice to see prices keep coming down, so now all the base Air are $200 differences:
    M1 - $1097
    M2 - $1297
    M3 - $1497

    • +5

It's almost like apple planned it to be segmented or something…

$1879.06 for an as new (Display model) 16gb 512gb macbook air m3.. with code JULC2C
I know its not the same but a seriously good price for a decent upgrade

    • +1

Noting it's a single item listing.

      • yep first in best dressed situation

    • How can it be a demo and also ‘never used’?

      • It may have been on display in a cabinet for example, and it doesn't necessarily mean it was in an Apple store (those units most likely get trashed).

    • I agree

  • +3

16gb with 512Gb SSD is $2097 if anyone interested

so $600 for 8gb of ram and 256gb bigger ssd… apple tax hits hard

      • +4

        And 2 more gpu cores…

On a different note, do you guys even sleep? Or you not from Australia..lol

  • +7

With back to school $240 gift card and M4 around the corner, $300 difference isn't that attractive.

    • +15

More than five months is around the corner? Back to school for you.

      • Aren't there 2 back to school sales every year?

    Crowdstrike protection deal

  • I feel like the current perfect MacBook Air is the M2 version. It has the same design as the M3, the performance is enough for daily usage and the battery life is even longer.

    • +1

M2 is better battery than M3? How?

      • Some video reviews showed that the MacBook Air with the M2 chip has a longer battery life compared to the one with the M3 chip.

        • That's awesome ! I bought macbook air m2 16/256 yesterday ! But i feel bad new M3 8/256 model is $140 cheaper than mine :'(

          • +2

@Partypants: Never mind, you can ignore this post. XD

            • @P1ter: I can still exchange or return 😂
              M2 16/256 vs M3 8/256 which one prefer if same price ?

              • +4

@Partypants: I prefer to keep the m2 one for it's bigger RAM.

                • @P1ter: Thank you for advice bro cheers 👍

                  • +1

@Partypants: I believe Apple's strategy for phasing out electronic products relies on insufficient RAM to render older devices obsolete, rather than inadequate CPU performance.

                    • @P1ter: Yeah. I agree. One more thing i don't like M2 256g SSD issues.

                      I heard M3 256G model fixed this issues .
So my question is when M3 8G/256G
Model memory swap more faster than M2 8/256 ? Because of ssd speed If yes?

                      • @Partypants: MacBooks with smaller storage capacities tend to have slower read and write speeds (likely due to using cheaper memory chips). My idea is to buy the computer and then have someone replace the SSD to improve the speed. This practice is quite common in China.

                        • @P1ter: So perfect for me M3 16/256 but money 🤦🏻‍♂️

                        • @P1ter: Do you mean they can replace the SSD on a current macbook? I suppose its possible with the right gear, obviously warranty would be gone.
Apple could easily block this at a lower system logic leveI but maybe its so infrequent they don't care.

                      • @Partypants: You don't have SSD issues when you have 16gb RAM so it doesn't matter. That's only a problem for computers with insufficient memory.

I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between an M2 and M3 laptop if they both have 16gb RAM, save your money.

                        • @greatlamp:

You don't have SSD issues when you have 16gb RAM

So M2 SSD hardware magically fix itself?

                          • @snvl: If you look up what the issue is with having only 8gb RAM then you will magically understand.

There is nothing wrong with the SSD.

                            • @greatlamp: I do understand.
Hardware ‘issue’, more RAM will reduce the issue, but still there.

                              • @snvl: Ok. How much RAM do you need on a macbook then? 32gb? 64gb?

                                • @greatlamp: SSD, has Nothing to do with the RAM.

                                  • +1

@snvl: What do you think the issue with the SSD is that has nothing to do with the RAM?

We are referring to the slower write speed of the SSD on the M2 macbook causing slowdowns in performance, when the macbook runs out of RAM and uses the swap file. This also leads to excessive wear on the SSD. None of this is an issue with more RAM, 8gb isn't enough.

Do you not understand the issue or are you just being a miserable pedant with nothing to offer? Why not try and be helpful instead

                                    • @greatlamp: You are 100% correct not sure why @snvl is arguing it . The above video linked by @georgev highlights this

                                    • @greatlamp: The 256 ssd performance is lower/worse than the 512 ssd (M2). 8gb or 16gb doesn’t change that.

                                      M3 doesn’t have the issue.

                                      • @snvl: An SSD with a write speed of over 1GB/second is not slow and is not an issue. Your moronic pendantry causes unnecessary worry and confusion to people who aren't as familiar with computers.

                                        • -1

@greatlamp: Interesting, the most sold MacBook is the 8gb and I am the one moronic pedantry and creating confusion.

                                          • @snvl: Completely irrelevant. You have no idea what you are talking about so you spout some more useless facts? What do sales figures have to do with the SSD.

Stop trying to be a rude smartass.

                                      • @snvl: The unified memory is only affected if you are requiring more ram.. regarding process relating to the use of a SSD for storage there is no difference.
If you are using unified memory for a ram boost M3 is better than m2 but both aren't great in comparison to having more ram which 16gb is really advisable. 8gb in 2024 is very limiting.
I can assure you most people will feel the limitation in a couple of years max. I'm not sure how everyone else is. But I like to buy a laptop that will last me a good few years as in 5 or so at least

                                        • @maverickjohn:

But I like to buy a laptop that will last me a good few years as in 5 or so at least

I prefer to upgrade sooner. 8gb hasn’t been an issue and I prefer more storage.

I will leave it at that.
