Going to The USA for The First Time, What Should I Buy/Look out for?

Hey OzBargainers

I'm about to leave for my trip to the USA for the first time in a week. Will be meeting up with some mates there. Will be going for roughly 16 days

Whilst on the trip, I want to take advantage of my time there, I'll be having a good time but I'd want to buy some stuff as well. So I want to ask what should be on the lookout for whilst there and bring back some stuff for myself or family.

Edit: I'll be travelling mainly West Coast, like LA, San Fran and Seattle.

I'll then fly to New Orleans and Florida before heading to New York, then back to LA to get home

Also any tips on just travel in general would be pretty handy, will be my first time exploring outside of Australia so hopefully I make it out alive.

    you need a car buses are not recommended Americans like Europeans all drive on the correct side of the road.

    General tips

    • Have a debit/credit card with no international transaction fees (E.g. ING, Macquarie etc)
    • Have travel insurance, (I was food poisioned the night before the flight, got a doctor's note to say I cannot fly rebooked to another day and lucky travel insurance reinbursed my out of pocket expensives to rebook the flight last minute)
    • Bring some US dollars with you as an emergency $500-1000 USD.
    • Separate your cards, incase your wallet gets stolen, have another case separated from your wallet/purse or bag.
    • Remember to tip, $1US per drink and up to 20% for good service at a restuarant, no need to tip at fast food restuarants (e.g. McDonalds, Burger King (Hungry Jacks) etc. Ask for 1 dollar bills which is good for tipping.

    If you like basketball or any sports in US, maybe look at some tickets in Cities you will be there for a game you are interested in.

    If you rent a car check with the rental place that they haven't reported it stolen and the police know it isn't stolen

    Bring alot of money for tips, people over there would shoot you if you don't give them tips

    Sounds like you will be in each place for 2 days.

    16 days is enough for either east coast or west coast.

    Buy stuff you like, forget about any other suggestion.

      Given the amount of cities they're trying to hit, and the amount of travel days required, they wont even get 2 full days in all of the cities

    Your itinerary is too packed. You won't have time to buy anything.

    If you know short people buy long jeans/pants with short leg lengths 29 or 30.

    Button up fly 501 Levi jeans.
