Wi-Fi Connection Issue after Switched nbn Provider - On One Game Only

Hi all, I’m having a really weird issue here.

Lately I’ve changed to Optus NBN and the speed are pretty good but there is one game I’m having a connection issue with. When I open the game it just keeps loading, and eventually times out. I then perform a speed test it’s all good. Opened other apps/games no problem too. Went back to the game and waited for maybe two minutes it works, but then few mins later when it requires internet connection it starts spinning again. Before I switched to Optus I had got no problems, the game is always loading smoothly like all other apps.

So, it’s not really no Wi-Fi data feeding through the game because if I wait for few minutes it works but after a short period it drops out again. I hope you understand what I’m saying it’s not 100% not working but the connection goes on and off?

No internet problem as I get full speed when using all other apps, tried to factory reset the modem, unplug and plug in the cables, uninstall and install again the game still the same. Called Optus and TP-Link (my modem manufacturer) basically they are saying nothing wrong from their end so they don’t know what the problem is.

If anyone encounter similar issue or know what’s going on please shed some light.

Many thanks

What is the game…? It could be game specific issue where the Optus has issue resolving the game DNS server

Worth googling the game + optus to see if others have similar issues and if there is a fix

    • Hi CodeXD, It's a Japanese game called Puzzle and Dragons. I've been switching around internet providers and never have this issue before.
i do have other overseas apps/games that's working fine. only this game…
Steps are: launch the game, take maybe 2 tries all went error code 104 (timed out) after 30 sec, maybe the 3rd, 4th time it finally let me in, when i finished 1 game it starts loading and back to the error 104 loop…

Is the game on Nintendo switch? I had issues playing online when I changed ISP, had to call them up to opt out of CGNAT to connect to Nintendo server.

        • It's the mobile game that i'm having issue with. you reckon i can contact Optus to resolve it? if so what exactly i should write?

@obsid: Does the game work on mobile data? You'll need to find some scenarios where the game works with other providers but not Optus. If you have access to a friend's place to see if it works on their network it will further prove the issue is with Optus.

CG-NAT and online P2P games is a problem with some providers however Optus don't use CG-NAT for nbn.

    • tried google it by no luck.
in terms of DNS, i've set it to 1.1.1.1 and secondary 1.0.0.1.

      • You tried Google DNS?

        • yes i did, still the same. thanks for ur help anyway

This is because different ISPs use different routes to the destination, in this case your game server.
Optus CS won’t understand nor can fix this.

My games also DCed intermittently if I use the likes of Tangerine and SpinTel and other Vocus resellers.

I’m surprised you’re getting this from Optus.

My games are stable with ABB, Superloop, and Leaptel.

Easy solution would be to switch ISP. Why did you choose Optus?

If you’re tech savvy, you can force change the routes your modem take, or use a VPN and find a server node that can reach your game server with no issue (trial and error).

    • Thanks for sharing your experience! i've got 3 games on my mobile and i've been with Dodo, TPG, Exetel and now Optus, never had this issue before with any of them.
I keep switching ISP just to get their new customer discounts, Exetel increased their price and Optus was doing the 15k Flybuys points bonus hence switched.

True, the Optus technical support is not helpful at all, they just say the NBN connection from their end is good and i'm not using Optus modem so not much they can do.

I think i'll just stick with it for 3 months then change ISP. thanks again!
