    How much is it normally?

    • +11

You made me curious so I did some digging.

      Apparently it was $17.99 in 2022 and $14.99 in 2019! 😟

      • I bought one in 2019 and every year appalled at the price increase

Tell me you don't have car insurance without telling me you don't have car insurance.

          • @nzcoops: My car insurance has dropped

            • @jv: Send pics!

                of my car?

            • @jv: Of your car insurance prices!

              • @nzcoops: I switched from Budget to AAMI and saved over $200

These plants are awesome for the office and home. Already have 4 from 2022 and all are doing well.
If you're lucky, visit Aldi on the last day of them being on sale, they generally drop them down to $10 for the remaining ones.

    • Is the last day of sale the day before the next sale or are they available for like a week/month?

      • +1

Last time they were only available to buy for a week, it was the last day of that week that they were discounted.

    • Are they low maintenance and easy to care for? My wife and I have brown thumbs. We even manage to kill cacti

      • +1

Extremely easy to care for. I top up the water in mine weekly, and keep them out of direct sunlight for most of the day.

    • A couple of tips:
      1. Add some extra material in the bottom of the pot/saucer. I used some aquatic rock (from my fish tank) which holds the water in longer.
      2. Spray the rock itself each month or more often. Some of my rocks don't soak the water well and this is required to keep the plant hydrated properly.
      3. Try not to use tap water if possible. Some nasty chemical build-up from my region (East VIC) which causes white spots to form on the roots and rock.

I don't feed the plant any nutrients as the rock seems to provide enough for it. I've had some great success in propagating the tops of the plants and giving them out as gifts to friends and family.

Just do what my company does and hire plants from people who then come around weekly to look after them, super cost effective and totally rational.

I have one of these, the Staghorn fern (they seem to sell out first). And its one of my fav plants around the house

  • +1

I have one of these (the umbrella plant) from Bunnings that was on clearance for $3. Personally not a fan. Keeping the thing watered is super annoying (as much as daily in summer).

That said, the staghorn fern is interesting. Curious what others experience has been with the watering needs of the staghorn fern.

  • Mine died quickly :(

    • And with a heavy rock left behind :(

      • +3

Put googly eyes on it and you now have a pet rock.

Slightly deeper saucer maybe with hidden compartment would be better for reducing evaporation. But then, they will sell more if you kill more of them… :)

  • +1

First one I bought didnt grow at all (different type of leaves) and eventually died.
Second one, same as in the picture above, has been with us for 2-3 years now and it doing great. Need to water every 2-3 days in winter and almost daily in summer.

  • dont these plants need some sunlight to survive?

    • +1

Well yes. They are indoor plants, so either some sunlight or artificial office light is fine if you aren't next to the window.

  • I have heaps of pot plants and like to think of myself as a green thumb but I couldn't keep it alive.

My wife bought it and I thought WTF, how is it going to survive without any nutrients (in soil).

    • +2

It's a volcanic stone.. More nutrients that soil will ever be able to contain

I've had the same one from an aldi special buy from about 20 years ago now, its huge and still going fine!
