first price drop on this brand new release speaker (released May 2024). $299 price for this makes it closer in price to the Stormbox Blast which is usually $255-$259 on sale.

drop in price seems to have happened right after Prime day ended. https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0CZ7DY692

similar speaker to the Stormbox Blast, except this speaker charges via USB-C (OTG from a Powerbank etc) and Soundcore should be better quality overall. from watching videos the only thing that seems to be a downside is the sound is not great out of the box and a bit muffled, so it needs some tweaking of Soundcore App EQ like most other Soundcore speakers.

oh and one more important point other than USB-C charging is it weighs only 3.8kg compared to the usual 6 to 7kg of Stormbox and JBL Boombox 3. this is apparently due to neodynium magnets used in the speakers which are more powerful so smaller and lighter.
this light weight should also be considered as part of the value since for it's size it will be much easier to carry around.

also I recently learned you should not play USB-C charging speakers while they are charging it will cause damage the battery.

Shoutout to all the lurkers who got the Partybox 310 when it dropped to $360ish!

    • +3

      you mean this? good price.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745031

the only downside of the 310 compared to this is the 17.42kg weight.
3.8kg vs 17.42kg is a massive difference if you want it to be portable.
at least it has wheels though.

also since I looked up specs, 72Wh battery seems a bit small for the size? Boom 2 Plus battery is 54Wh.

I saw on eBay you can buy carry straps for the Partybox 110, which made it look kind of portable (*in eBay photos).

      • That's the one!

It's hard comparing bigger speakers now that I grabbed one after it came up. I grabbed the Motion X600 a few weeks ago which is nice. Probably not as loud as this one but was only like $112. I probably don't need anything in between for most, if not all occasions.

yeah great deal on 310 if you C&C’ed.

because it’s new the Boom 2 Plus crossed out $359 price in this deal is one of the rare times it was the priceit actually sold for before price drop.

so yeah early $60 off for anyone who had their eye on this size speaker. pretty sure wait a year and you will be able to score a bigger discount (or maybe 6 months because Soundcore has a quick cycle - I remember looking up Q series headphones and they dropped yearly but I think the most recent one only took 6-8 months to come out after the previous version).

@harshbdmmaster718: Yeah, you're right about the Soundcore products.

Come to think of it, it probably does hit a lot harder than the X600, probably a decent bit louder too. Might try and find a 110 comparison and see if they compare. Might end up finding out I do need an inbetween speaker like this after all.. 😅

              @WasBargain:

Might try and find a 110 comparison and see if they compare.

110 will be the bigger speaker.

Boom 2 Plus is being compared to JBL Boombox 3.
but imo it’s more like a Boombox 2 or Stormbox Blast. but half the weight of all those.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Sounds like you know your speakers. What's your recommendation for an upgrade from Tribit Stormbox Blast? In terms of sound quality?

The Stormbox Blast is okay, but is a bit "plastic" or hollow at times. Quite narrow in how it disperses sound. I guess I could get another one for stereo pairing, but am wondering if there's something better in a single speaker. Are you familiar with the Sonos Play5? I like that sound, and would like a portable version of that. The Play 5 pushes sound all around, nice controlled bass. Excellent at low to medium volumes which is what I need. I also need Aux line-in. :-) But I don't want to buy Sonos, I want a normal bluetooth speaker not wi-fi. Any thoughts?

                • @cerealJay: probably know just about as much as any other person who is into tech and watches a lot of youtube. 😁
I got into tech during or towards the end of covid. needed something to research and spend some money on. now I read EVERYTHING tech related, especially like chasing new releases/announcements, even if I don't even want something in that category or product I just love reading about it.

upgrade from Blast would probably be Partybox 110/Club 120 or Sony XP500. they both have particleboard wood enclosure inside so that sorts out the plastic hollowness. JBL should sound slightly better out of the box but has a pretty basic App EQ with only 3 adjustments (bass, mid, highs).
Sony has a slightly better App EQ with 5 adjustments. sound can be very subjective you can probably listen to both in a store that has them both on the shelf.
Sony on sale is cheaper because they don't sell as well as JBL. Sony also usually has better battery life (closer to claimed) and even has battery health preserving features in the app (like limit max charge to 90% - at least their smaller speakers do) so they will last more in the longterm.
JBL 110 is the older model, Club 120 is the newer version with slightly less bass and a removable battery. you can swap it out to keep playing without having to charge, or if the original battery dies you can put a brand new one in very easily (won't find this one on sale any time soon though).

both have Aux in. but if you check any other models I recommend double checking this feature because a lot of new models remove it.

                  • @harshbdmmaster718: Thanks.. yeh I dunno about the "party boxes"! I wanted something a bit more refined, better at lower volumes. You're right I should test them in store. Was considering the Marshall Tufton too. Not sure though. I've been spoiled by good quality mains-powered speakers, and was hoping to get that in a battery powered speaker, but maybe I'm dreaming.

                    • @cerealJay: refined costs more money so couldn’t really recommend it first on ozbargain.

if you want something a step higher and portable sounds like you want something from Bang and Olufsen.

also fyi all Marshall speakers have a reverb effect to the sound which you can’t turn off. some people love it kind of like how a guitar sounds through an amp. but some find the slight echo effect annoying.

weirdly speakers that are bigger than Blast, are portable and step higher in sound quality is not easy to find.
but I did just find this reviews seem to be good. https://audioinfluence.com.au/products/escape-p9-air-bundle-…

                      • @harshbdmmaster718: The smaller Escape P6 actually looks good! On sale for $999, not an amazing deal but better than nothing.
That is the kind of thing I'm looking for. I won't rush out and buy, but it's going on the wishlist!
Edit - the P6 doesn't have Aux in, so the P9 it is then!

                        • @cerealJay: yeah saw the P6. it's also only 60W (less than Stormbox Blast) and has only 2 main speakers which point front and back (but more diagonal if you position speaker like it looks in the photos). it also seems to be similar in size to Stormbox Blast so the sound difference might not be as big as you are expecting for spending $1000.

P9 has 100W and as you said Aux in. also 4 main speakers each pointing in every direction for full 360 sound if you need it outside. $1700 is a lot for the speaker, but there are some features which give it some value. such as size, size of subwoofer, 360 design, LifePO4 battery (offers many more charge cycles than typical Lithium Ion in most speakers - usually 5000 cycles before dropping it's usable capacity compared to roughly 1000 for lithium ion).
LifePO4 produces less heat when in use and is also more stable when fully charged and discharged meaning you can charge it fully to 100% and use the speaker until 0% more often, when you usually want to avoid that with Lithium Ion they don't like that and speeds up battery degradation so it means you get less cycles.

compared to Bang and Olufsen it seems like you are getting similar overall quality but more bang for buck with the Escape P9. pretty sure B&O's $2000 BT speaker is slightly smaller than Stormbox Blast. B&O prices it's items with like 300% mark up as well. usually the product is worth 1/3 of it's retail price.

  • Can you use this for karaoke? Bluetooth mics?

  • great to wear and play on the train

    • excellent for the morning commute in tokyo

    • Nah. Not loud enough.

  • Where did you hear that you shouldn’t play your usb-c speaker when it’s charging?

I ALWAYS have mine in the charger at home when I’m playing it. Hopefully it’s not damaged

    • Where did you hear that you shouldn’t play your usb-c speaker when it’s charging?

on reddit. I don't understand the technical side of it. but assume the speaker playing consumes more energy than the 30w charge, so basically you are draining your battery while attempting to charge. means you are just generating extra heat without actually charging the battery fast enough to fully charge it. and from what I know any heat is bad for battery health (which is why it degrades slowly over time just by charging normally).

      • Ok that makes sense.

I thought it wouldn’t be using the battery when connected to power?

Interesting though. I’m going to look more into it.

        Thanks mate.

        • When you read articles about phone batteries exploding, there's sometimes a little comment about how you should never use your phone while charging. I just adopted that for all my devices, except my laptop. I've set up that thing where your laptop stops charging when you hit 80%, so I'm guessing that's better. Maybe? Even though it's not charging, I still leave the power cord in.

        • I thought it wouldn’t be using the battery when connected to power?

that’s usually the case when the speaker is designed for it. these speakers usually hav a big laptop charging brick in the box or, AC cable which goes straight to the speaker (laptop charger is inside the speaker).

for example JBL Boombox 3 has AC plug straight to speaker, and is advertised to have 130W? Of power when running on battery only, but 180W with the AC cable plugged.
so clearly it’s designed to be able to be used plugged in as well.

I think what is happening is with plenty of power the circuit fully powers the speaker, then if any left over goes to battery. but I think heat will still be an issue.
with the speaker in the deal for example, 30w is not enough to power the entire speaker, so all of it goes to charging the battery and if you turn it on the speaker always runs off the battery. this is terrible for the battery.

at the same time just because a speaker charges with AC cable, does not guarantee it was designed to charge and run at the same time.
