Steelcase are having a 25% off the Gesture range and 20% off storewide using code: PACIFIC20

They've started offering a "Knocked down" package so the delivery fee is waived. I'd recommend this option to save some money as the chair is not too difficult to assemble. It's just got a heavy piece you have to align on the base so you'll be fine with someone helping.

Fully assembled delivery is about $54.

"Please Note: Knocked Down Self Assembly Delivery is FREE for customers based in NSW/VIC/ACT. Fully Assembled Delivery is only available for customers based in Sydney and Melbourne"

Go try them out at your local dealer first. I've tried Steelcase chairs and they just simply didn't suit me, made my back hurt within the hour that I was trying them, don't just buy blindly!

I have a Steelcase I got free from work during COVID. Nice enough chair but at this price a Hermann Miller is close to attainable. Tried them at work and oh my god they’re comfortable. A different league altogether.

We have Aerons at work and while the build is great, I don't find them all that comfortable. Apart from the forward tilt, I mostly prefer my ergohuman at home.

        • +2

this is a case of why everyone is different; i had the ergohumans gen 1 v2 (the ones always posted on ozb) and i hated them.

I got the Embody last year during the Living Edge black friday sale. Was a bit more than this, but holy shit, it really is a great chair. As long as i get a good 10-15 years out of it i wont feel too ripped off :)

My old Ergohuman chair lasted me a good 8 years before i passed it on to my wife who is still using it, so i dont see why i wouldnt get a good amount of use from the Herman Miller.

        • Same. They have since increased them to $3100 though!

Unless you can test chairs for a full day, sitting in it for a few minutes to "try it" is quite useless.

      • Few minutes sure, but I'd suggest trying it for close to an hour minimum. Unless you have absolutely no idea what fits and feels comfortable, I'd say you can get a good enough idea from about an hour of trying.

To give you an example I went to Steelcase dealer first, sat in the Leap v2 and Gesture about an hour all together, neither of them felt quite right from the beginning. I definitely sat long enough to know for sure, and I didn't like a lot of the features.

I went to Haworth next, tried Fern and Zody, they weren't bad, pretty neutral feeling, but the build quality seems a bit less than Steelcase.

Last went to HM, with the expectation that the Aeron was going to be overrated after reading a whole bunch of online reviews and youtube videos, however soon as I sat on it, I felt like the chair supported me well immediately. Ended up getting it despite the price over the others.

I'm glad I went out to try it, happy with my choice.

Im mostly talking about sitting 8+ hours.
I had bought a secret lab titan and initially it felt great but after a few hours it was the most uncomfortable chair ive ever used in comparison to other gaming type chairs.

Currently i own a steelcase leap V2 (took a risk and bought used) first impressions was it was a bit meh, after 8 hours i was still comfortable and still to this day its amazing though i do miss a headrest sometimes but not as much as i though i would.

Still tempted to buy a aeron though that thing looks insanely comfortable but that price tag haha.

          • @Axelstrife: Yeah I use mine way more than 8+ hours tbh, which is not a good thing in itself, but I have no problem with it, I can justify the cost with warranty coverage + how much I use it for.

Yeah we've all been there before, I got sick of going through cheaper chairs before we land on the right one!

      • I get what you mean but I don't agree that it's pointless, because when I tried this and several other high end chairs I found even after a few minutes that the adjustability and features suited me better on a more affordable one that I had initially tried.. Went back and got that model and saved myself a large sum. Have been comfortable ever since.

"I found even after a few minutes that the adjustability and features suited me better"

True, i guess i was only looking at this from a "i already know what features i want" perspective with comfort being the only unknown.

    • +1

Yep, definitely recommend trying any high end chair in person before buying them if possible.

I was initially going for herman miller aeron/embody but I found all their models didn't suit me. Within 2mins of trying a steelcase Gesture/Leap, I knew it was for me

    Thought I saw $172.

    • +1

      Hopefully before you ordered

  • When did they jacked up the prices?

    • +2

COVID-ish. I'm sure the pandemic and WFH didn't help. Bought mine in 2017 for $700 (including shipping). Different times…

      • got my herman miller equa 2nd hand for $25 pre covid, now people want $250 2nd hand for it lmao.

  • -1

Purchased a demo version of this chair on facebook marketplace for $700, this costs too much full price.

  • +2

$1700 is a ripoff, these sold for under $1000 - prices havent increased that much. I'd rather get a Haworth Fern chair for $1000, just ask Haworth for arms for $200.

  • +1

Tried fern and gesture with headrest. I preferred the gesture and didnt originally care for the headrest but it changed my mind, the headrest was too good. The zody is a good one too.

    • +1

Main reason I went for the gesture, I needed a good headrest ahah

  • How can these cost more than a Herman Miller Aeron?!?!?

    • They don't though? The cheapest I can find an Aeron for right now is like 2.3k

Also, the price in title is the Gesture Headrest version. Aeron doesn't have a headrest so a more fair comparison would be the Gesture without headrest going for $1,491.75.. much cheaper than a brand new Aeron.

  • Does anyone have experience with Steelcase's fabrics? Different colour options are actually using very different fabrics.
Like the red and blue ones are made of Era fabric, the grey ones are Otto, etc.

    • I've had the grey one for past couple years and it still looks and feels brand new. Fabric is sturdy and cushion hasn't deformed at all

Who tf buys a $1800 chair? Bought a chair in 2019 at ikea for $89 and still going strong. I use this chair almost daily as i wfh too.

    • +3

People who prioritise comfort, ergonomics and posture far more than you do I'm guessing.

      • My chair is very comfy, didn't cause any problem to my back etc. So I'm not falling for these bs

        • Comfort is subjective, as your body/build is unique to you.

  • -2

Im ona decent wicket (top tax rate) but could never, inagine spending $3k on an ofifce chair.

    • Ok buddy

    • +1

Could you imagine investing in a good pair of shoes, or a decent mattress, or even quality tyres for your car?

      • That's my point. I've done all the above.. just spending 3k on an office chair is ridiculous in my eyes. I know we all have different needs, wants in life etc, happy to spend $100k+ on a car. Just see zero value on doing that for an office chair.

I guess if you have a sore back, or have some issues physically it might make sense.

        • +1

I guess if you have a sore back, or have some issues physically it might make sense.

..or if you sit in one all day, every day, and would benefit from a comfy ergonomic chair perhaps? 🤔

  • I tried a Leap V2 that my friend owns and it's probably the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in for a prolonged period of time.

I bought a Buro Tidal because of the warranty, being Australian made + Australian owned and I don't regret it, it definitely feels like it'll last. but if I had the choice again I'd buy the Leap V2 instead.
