If it makes calls, it'll become more popular.
Samsung is not known for building good cameras. For 500 bucks, you can get a Nikon D3200 DSLR Camera + 18-55mm VR Lens Kit from Kogan already.

It's silly to compare this camera to a big bulky SLR. While the SLR can do things the Samsung can't, the Samsung can do things the SLR can't.

You don't buy this camera for SLR photo quality, you buy this camera for what you can do after the photo is taken - email it out, post it on fb, spoil it with instagram, post it on twitter, auto-upload to Dropbox, make calls with Skype if you REALLY wanted to make calls from your camera, run hundreds of thousands of apps from the play market, etc.

That said, $500 is a bit much for a compact nowadays. But seeing that it's the first of a new category of cameras, it's understandable. Early adopters always pay more. It'll surely be more affordable in a year.

      • get a canon s110 if you want a compact camera.

        • +2

does it run facebook, instagram, twitter (all with full-featured clients), google maps, dropbox, Skype, access the play store, etc etc?

They do different things. That's why this one costs more. There's literally no other camera like it. Pity it's so expensive though.

Anyway this deal seems good for someone who wants to buy one now.

        • In what way does it seem good? It's the same price as at least two other competitors - I didn't do an exhaustive search.

        • hmm, it's cheaper than the other two competitors. Isn't $12 worth anything anymore?

        • You're having addition troubles. $509 + $19 = $528.

          EDIT Oh wait. It's $509 - $10 + $19. I'm having subtraction troubles.

OP - you might want to change the title to be just "$518 delivered" instead of all that guff.

and your reading comprehension also requires some work young tantryl…

        • Ahah yeah I agree, the title is a bit deceiving. It really should show $518 instead of 509+19-10.

S110 has build in WIFI so if you connect your smartphone to it yes it scan do all that function you mention.

IMO Samsung has got a good idea but poor excursion, First and most important it weight over 300g and for a compact camera is quite heavy. This is because Samsung put in all that crap like IPS screean, quad core….bla bla!!! I just don't understand why u need all this stuff for a camera, not to mention that super zoom Samsung like to put on all their cameras. Very rare people need such a big zoom. I rather they spend the money on improving their camera's photo quality.

        • +1

Built-in wifi on a camera is not the same as 3G on a camera running Android.

"Crap" like an IPS screen, optical zoom, quad core processor?

Obviously this camera is not aimed at people like you. Not everything has to be created to suit your needs and your needs only. There are other people out there in the world who have different needs to you.

Granted, this camera will have a small target audience for now, but the point is that it exists. Eventually the price will drop and it'll become a lot more attractive to the general public, many of which are already familiar with Android and have invested in the Android ecosystem. The apps they've purchased or are familiar with from their phone or tablet can also run on the camera.

You should just buy a basic point and shoot like an S110. This camera is not for you, just like how a DSLR is not for everyone. Different people have different needs.

        • Obviously you have no understanding of the camera market.

          1) S110 is not a basic point and shoot. The canon S series has come a very long way and was never a simple point and shoot.

          2) Canon has put a lot of work to the wireless interface of S110 yes it is not like a camera with 3G connection and Android, but that is the point exactly why you need all this gadget in a camera with high pixel count and mega zoom (which is useless). Do you know how long it take up load a 16 mega pixel photo to the net?

I understand Samsung is trying to bridge the market with this product who is the target audience and is this group of people willing to pay this price??

        • yes it is not like a camera with 3G connection and Android

There you go. Apples and oranges. You are obviously not the target audience, but you have to understand that there are other people in the world apart from you. :)

As mentioned many times before, at this price point, it's a very small target audience. But why should you care? It's nothing you'd buy anyway. A lot of people thought the ipad would never take off as people already had smartphones and laptops, didn't they?

IMO, if it can not do the best of what it is supposed to do (taking photos), I will as well get a Nexus 4 which makes calls, good photos, uploading photos and more. All that for $150 less.

        • +2

It's design is better-photos-than-a-phone/tablet-that-can-insta-upload. Not pure camera. Not pure phone/tablet.

I wonder if people had to have conversations like this about having a watch on a phone?

Oh wait, I was around back then, we did.

EDIT I'd like to add that it was a joyous revelation that I'd never have to wear a watch full time at the age of ~20. Others disagreed with me for years, but as someone who hated and had always hated ties, belts and watches but had assumed that one day I'd have to "grow out of it", the mobile phone was a godsend. Now if only I could stop people being able to contact me 24/7…

      • If image quality is not your concern then just use your phone to take photos which can be uploaded to fb, instagram … Why fork out abother $500 for something that already can be done on a smart phone.

        • For the same reason why anyone would buy a compact camera - there's a middle ground between phone quality/features and SLR quality/features. This has a wider lens, larger sensor, optical zoom, and optical image stabilization. You've posted camera deals, so you would clearly know the benefits of those features.

Price, as we've all discussed, is the problem. This is clearly an early-adopter device at this stage. But there are people who are not price-sensitive. This is for them.

  • Just wait for another year or so when Android in cameras become an ordinary feature. Price I reckon will significantly come down. I still like to do it the old fashioned way anyway - tweak photos on PC before uploading on the web. For quick snaps my Android phone will do.

    • Price I reckon will significantly come down.

Indeed; the price is always high for early adopters.

because camera phones are too mainstream…

  • For this price you are much better of with something like the Sony Nex-5N http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80312

      Apples and oranges.

    • +2

I do not understand why so many people are struggling to grasp the difference between this and a DSLR.

      • +1

Many people seem to be unable to see outside of their own niche, and cannot realise the fact that 'better' is neither linear nor objective.

      • It depends on the value of what this camera can bring. Some people see it as a good gadget if they have a need for it. My first impress when I come across this post is that "Samsung is selling a compact camera costs more than $500?, forget it. I will say otherwise if it is made by Nikon or Canon". I think this camera is targeting the niche market.

        • Yes, it is. Clearly, it is. It's people's inability to see that and instead offering alternatives that don't cater to that market that is baffling me.

        • Yeah, it's a bit like telling everyone in an ipad thread to buy a laptop instead. :)
