  • Genuine question are there many 24 hour plus flights where meals aren't included?

    • +4

      Scoot

      • Correct, at scoot you have to pay to get water. If you don't have cash or credit card you can't get anything. Debit cards aren't accepted.

        • they let me use a debit card up to like 10 usd or something haha

  • +9

Half of the planes are old, new Abu Dhabi airport is nice, easy to get your 10 thousand steps πŸ˜…

Pro tip: Wizzair (European Scoot) has a new base in Abu Dhabi. You can make a long stopover on a way to Europe and visit some unique places for a very cheap price:

    Armenia,Yerevan
    Azerbaijan,Baku
    Egypt,Alexandria; Cairo; Sohag
    Georgia,Kutaisi
    Iraq,Erbil
    Israel,Tel Aviv
    Jordan,Amman; Aqaba
    Kazakhstan,Almaty; Astana; Turkistan
    Kuwait,Kuwait City
    Kyrgyzstan,Bishkek
    Maldives,Male
    Oman,Muscat; Salalah
    Saudi Arabia,Dammam; Medina
    Uzbekistan,Samarkand; Tashkent

    • Thanks, Wizzair does provide lots of options to the balkans and eastern Europe. What's it like to fly Wizzair? So far I've found the website is a nightmare and I can't search a trip let alone price extra leg room seats, food and carry on bigger than 20x30cm LOL.

      • Pretty awful flight times from recent searches for the Balkans, you land around midnight then lose all transport options except taxis (generalisation, may not apply to all destinations). Extra costs for luggage made it not worth it when for not all that much more I could fly Lufthansa.

        • Thank you.
I guess Wizzair would only attract me if they had a route that no better airline offered without paying an extortionate amount.

      • Wizzair is ok airline to fly with, new planes

        Mobile app is good

If you travel with backpack only and remember to print your boarding pass in advance, don’t mind where you sit there won’t be any extra fees.

If not, fly with some one else!

Why is qantas not competing with all these other airlines? Insane.

    • +4

      "Because Qantas is superior"

    • +3

Because Qantas dont need money, they squeeze enough from domestic flights

      • +2

They're short on widebodies as well and they're purposely putting them on unique routes where they have no/little competition. Like the new Paris direct and Sydney-Auckland-New York

Just not willing to battle it out on competitive routes and do serious discounting, like just withdrew from China

It's a smart strategy.. Qantas can never win against the large hubs.. so bypass them and charge a premium

        • They also will never win against loss making but government subsidised Chinese and middle eastern airlines. So why would they bother trying

    • +5

Because Qantas has a monopoly on us and the government let's it happen by stopping competition

      • Qantas has a monopoly? What?

        • +4

Maybe not monopoly, but the government is running a protection racket for them

        • Did you not see recently when Qatar wanted to increase their international flights from Aus to Europe with like 30 ish extra flights per week, and the Australian government blocked it at the request of Qantas as it wouldn't be in Australian interests (i.e - Qantas would have to start being competitive and would make less profit for its share holders).

So yeah, monopoly is a great word.

    • Because their cost base is likely a lot higher and therefore they cannot compete directly with the ME3 on price.

    • +2

Qantas is not a well airline. The average age of their airframes is skyrocketing so the are about to fall off a capex cliff thanks to a particularly nasty little irish turd.
They have cashed in all their goodwill from sensible Australians. Yet many daft people are still hell bent on flying with them. Their FF program is a joke, The aircraft resemble herd transport vehicles, your bags will be lost and all with a cheerful scowl of contempt from their embittered staff. The best thing you can hope for is a codeshare with Emirates.

Boycotted them years ago. Velocity has never been better. Points will reliably get you on Qatar, Etihad, Singapore(my pick), ANA and UA.

    • +1

Because Qantus can get away with things like charging $1200 for a flight Brisbane to Darwin.

  • +5

If you enter the first 4 digits of an AMEX card, you can then unlock savings on Etihad website here - which basically end up being almost the same as through Skyscanner etc

    • +3

      Use "3700"

      • +5

Na mate need the rest of the card details please πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

        • Can vouch last four digit are not enough need all 16 digitals πŸ˜‚

Flew Etihad to Europe earlier this year and wouldn't recommend it. They're flying their old 777 run-down fleet from Sydney and Melbourne on the 16 hour flights and the service wasn't too great either. We had seat issues where the seat didn't recline, the window was vibrating/rattling and the entertainment screen had lines running through it. We also paid extra and upgraded to "Economy Space" for one leg and Etihad changed the plane one week before which didn't have Economy Space and refused to refund the money and just allocated another Extra legroom seat. Overall not a comfortable experience with them.

    • +4

I have heard similar stories about Etihad as well.
Probably one of those Middle Eastern airlines where their new product is amazing, but if you luck out and get their old planes you may as well have flown a low-cost carrier,

Speaking of aircraft swaps, Qatar are known for swapping out their aircraft last minute. Not so bad for economy passengers, but it impacts business class customers who booked their "Qsuite" product and end up with their crappy old business class product.

    • Hmm interesting, my alternative for that price range is China Southern however which feels even worse….come on Qantas

    • Etihad fly twice a day into both SYD and MEL. They use the 777 for one flight and the 787 for the other.

      • Good to know the 777 can be avoided. Is their A380 to London any good?

        • The A380 London service was great with comfortable economy seats and great entertainment consoles, but due to a relatively short journey compared to the 16 hour to AUS - it didn't excite me too much.
