Cairns - Holiday (Package Deal Perhaps) Suggestions

Used to live in FNQ but have not visited in almost two decades, so it has truly grown!
Holiday for 10 nights+ (from Melb) with car hire, late September / October.
Would like resort style for 2 adults (separate beds) with swimming pools etc.
Preferably not right in the city district; near ocean so perhaps Palm Cove, Port Douglas.
Will be travelling north and south, tablelands with ocean trips too.
Have Flybuys and Qantas Frequent Flyer memberships.
Any suggestions / recommendations?!

Definitely Palm Cove or Port Douglas.

Cairns itself is a bit "how you going" these days with a less than resort vibe when wandering the CBD/Esplanade area at any given time.

    • That’s what I was thinking; nice for a stroll but don’t wish to stay in the heart of the city either. Outer beach types areas preferred. Used to live in Freshwater and Brinsmead, then later Mission Beach down south. Palm Cove not too far to Mossman Gorge too, which should be nice for swimming. (We used to go there when there were no other visitors!). Will return for a visit to Mission Beach and surrounds, but also the tablelands (waterfall circuit) and a drive up to Daintree River, but perhaps not Cooktown.

Yep, all that sounds like the way to tackle it. I've stayed at all of Cairns, Palm Cove, and Port Douglas several times over the last 15-odd years. For what you seem to be looking at, those more northern districts will suit your needs well.

There are some great new hotels in Cairns, like Crystalbrook Riley. The casino offers some good dining options. Otherwise you could split your time between Palm Cove and Port. The outer reef tours depart from Port so it's nice to be staying nearby for the early start.

    • Port Douglas sounds very appealing, and son wishes to do some reef tours, and maybe a trip out to Double Isle if possible, where I have never visited myself, so will be handy. Hartleys Creek crocodile farm, Daintree River cruise, Mossman Gorge, rainforest circuit, Kuranda, and another day trip down to Mission Beach, the Boulders, and maybe Tully River whitewater rafting. We are looking at 10 days with car hire.

    Definitely Port Douglas.

Palm Cove is boring, especially if you have separate beds…

    • Hi jv! Travelling with my son lol. Prefer to have separate rooms of course but we would be looking at much more expense than two singles in the room.

      • Travelling with my son lol

        Then skip Palm Cove.

Split the time between Port Douglas and Cairns.

Trinity beach is also worth considering. Currently staying at the blue lagoon resort… great place.. ticks all the boxes

  • Thank you everyone for your comments. Have made a Qantas booking that covers flights and accommodation. We chose Oaks, Port Douglas for our accommodation. Only concern atm is that the highway between Port Douglas and Cairns is still being repaired after the last Season's cyclone (Jasper) did some damages. Highway has delays and currently closed overnight 8pm - 4am. So hoping the delays won't be too bad when we travel in a couple of months.
