15mins under the sun is enough daily for our vit D requirement, am i right?

    • +1

At peak sun with strong UV-B rays, and then waiting several hours until washing skin.

      journal

      https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2006/184/7/estimates-benefici…

Our study reinforces the importance of existing sun protection messages for the summer months throughout Australia. However, fair-skinned people should be able to obtain sufficient vitamin D from short periods of unprotected sun exposure of the face, arms and hands outside of the peak UV period (10:00–15:00) throughout Australia for most of the year. The greater variability in sun exposure times during winter, means that optimal sun exposure advice should be tailored to each location.

      Not in winter

Depends on the skin type as well. That 15 minutes recommendation is based on the research done on lighter skin people.

    • Depends on your age as well. Edit and weight….

    • +1

Can be as high as 45-60mins in wintee

    • +1

I thought the same, but the last few blood tests (one from summer and one from winter) have come up a bit under where I should be and I am not one to hide away from the sun. The doctor advised that some people just don't absorb it as easily as others. So I'm now on a tablet or two daily.

Found these were much better value and did feel less fatigued after a few days of starting using them. Pills are tiny but you only need one to hit your daily requirement. YMMV

    • +2

So the Swisse suggests 1000IU once a day and the Prowise suggests 4000IU once a day?!

      • Yeah, I believe 4000 is the highest amount you should get a day but supplements you usually lose like 20% at absorption. I only take 2-3 a week since your body stores Vitamin D and usually only over the winter period where the sunlight is usually absent.

      • +1

I've been taking 15000IU's every day and haven't been sick in 5 years. The study of Vitamin D is vast and underfunded. Been told by my doctor that 10000-15000 IU's couldn't hurt. Blood tests etc. is spot on

    • +1

You might be experiencing a bit of placebo here. These generally don't work that quickly and take a week or two to see any results:
      https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/long-vitamin-work-3555…

You want the fast acting D if you want fast results:
      https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/121576/swisse-fast-a…

      • No doubt there is probably some placebo in play. By a few days I was thinking around 5-6 days of taking it but I only take it 2-3 times a week so it would be a 2-week period or thereabouts now since I started on these.

Coles doing a clearout on vitamins, probiotics, etc .90% off .

    • Not at my locals

      • Keep looking at other locations as they all do clearout at different times according to staff , and these days bargains go quick.
Bigger stores also have a bigger range and a lot a stores they’re not marked so I’ve been taking stuff up to checkout to confirm clearance prices that I’ve seen elsewhere .
Woollies were also doing something clearing lines , but they may have just dumped old stock , as I had much less luck finding items there and I’ve seen them clearing shelves ,
I listed some in the Cenovis vitC Amazon post , if you want a comprehensive list let me know I’ll try to remember.
        I’ll take some Centrum - Mind & Memory 50 tabs $3.70 and see how I go .

      • Coles Clearance

        Swisse - Fast Acting Vitamin D3 90tabs $2.50
        - High Strength Krill Oil.30caps $3.60
        - Vitamin C Chewable 110 tabs $3?

Inner Health - Daily Immune Probiotic 30caps $3.30

        re’store probiotic - Honey Myrtle drink can 330ml 50c

        Nature’s Way - Complete Daily Multivitamin 100tabs $3
        - Magnesium Quick Chews 30tabs $2
        - B12 Quick Chews $3?
        - Immune Support vitC Zinc Echinacea 100tabs $4?

        Natures Own - Executive Stress B 130tabs $3.70
        - Vitamin E 60caps $3.5?

        Blackmores - Fall asleep 30tabs $3.50?
        - Ache Relief 30tabs $3.60?
        - Daily Immune Action 60tabs $3.80?
        - Horseradish Garlic + C 50tabs $3.50?

        Life Botanics - Armour & Immune $4?
        - hair & toesteterone $4?

        Kynd - Hyaluronic Acid 30caps $3.80?

There were also Voost tubes $3 and also other electrolytes type stuff, skin care gummies, kids immunity gummies $1.50
Some were short dated this year some 2025 and beyond.
This list is incase they haven’t tagged them you have an idea what to take up to scan and check price incase it hasn’t been marked down or ticketed yet .
This is a guide , the clearance is ongoing deleting of lines and was also at woollies , may have finished at your closest store or not , but some feedback would be helpful .

        • Cheers, ill have a look today. That multivitamin looks good if i can score a few bottle for a tenner (years supply)

          • @easternculture: Magnesium is also very important for sleep but also for muscle health and for $2 i think I bought a dozen.
I just keep excess stock in the crisper for long term storage .
The probiotic and vitamin d were also ones I thought we’re important and stocked up on .

            • @beach bum: Managed to grab 10 x Voost Mental Boost 20 tablets at $1.50 each (Shelf price $15 each) ,3 x Boxes of Natures Mag+Energy 60 effervescent tablets at $3 each (Shelf price $30) and 2 x Magnesium Quick Chews 30tabs @ $2 each (Shelf price $20)

So seems 90% off some vitamins as per what you mentioned in upper comment so $300 worth of vitamins for $30

              • @easternculture: I’ve been going around different stores grabbing a bit of different clearance here and there , has been fun and at full rrp you could think you’re saving a fortune , but I only ever buy vitamins at the supermarket when they’re half price , so it’s more like buying at twenty percent of rrp , for me anyway .

They have just raised the prices so much now , I don’t know how people will buy at the supermarket at all .
I’m just glad I stocked up and will probably keep hunting until I can’t find any more in Cole’s , but Amazon and other online specials are pretty good if you buy large bottles 200 tabs etc .

That’s where I think the supermarket’s are really shafting us , selling small quantities 30 tabs ect in large bottles , and charging you as if it’s a convenience purchase .

Anyway keep scrounging guy before they throw the rest in the bin and go back to ripping us off .

                • @beach bum: Only interested in the effervescent as i can mix my bulk amino powders/preworkout powders so they taste good . Have about a years supply so far.

Also have been visiting my 4 local stores lately and took off the yellow labels so hopefully no one buys them

                  • @easternculture: You didn’t see any of the probiotics left ?
Gut health is pretty important (the engine), something easy to neglect when you’re young n just concerned with looking good and feeling strong .

                    • @beach bum: No probiotics

                      • @easternculture: I got 7 at $3.30 each for 90% off.
I’ve never seen those probiotics go on sale , so a bit of a score.
And the 50c probiotic drink cans another score
Keep the stomach flora happy n healthy .

                        • @beach bum: Are the vitamin discounts still on this sale cycle

                          • @easternculture: It’s a general clearance sale , until it sells or they throw it all in the bin and replace with new lines on the shelves like Woolworths has done .

                          • @easternculture: Still finding some of the VOOST for $1.50 and a few bits and pieces here and there , but seems like most shops have the new lines in the reordered shelves now , at least here in Qld .
Might have better luck in different states/areas ,
Just incase anyone’s been following this .

  • Great timing son!

  • I found this Japanese doco very interesting.

The Power of Vitamin D: From Osteoporosis to Cancer

    • +1

I see lots of miracle cure extolled on the internet by influencers, from vagus nerve stimulation to Zinc supplementation to Methylene Blue, but it is hard to know whether they are beneficial for everyone, beneficial to only a small portion of the population with a certain health issue, or just quackery that relies on placebo effects (good old fashioned snake oil repackaged for the 21 century). For recent blood tests I know I am low in magnesium and slightly deficient in Zinc but my Vitamin D and B12 are right in the middle. The easiest was to self-diagnose Zinc deficiency is to look for white spots in your nails. If you see some spots, ask your GP for a Zinc assay.

Particularly for degenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Carcinomas, Heart Disease), you need to follow a control group and a group using the treatment consistently for perhaps 10 years plus. In comparison, the benefits of antibiotics for infections or narcotics for pain can be quickly and easily demonstrated.

The editor of the Lancet said 50% of scientific research is garbage.

      • +1

I agree that gold standard research is best. And treatments are horses for courses.

        Science isn't without it's caveats.

For example, opioids aren't usually helpful in treating chronic non-cancer pain. So for someone with back pain, they'd be better off pursuing treatments other than pain killers.

        • +2

Pfizer scientists would strongly disagree with you

back pain, they'd be better off pursuing treatments other than pain killers.

They would recommend lifetime of oxycodone and tramadol over other treatments lol

      • +1

In evidence based medicine they taught us the gold standard is meta analysis of double blinded randomized controlled trials. I guess it would be hard to apply that to field of supplements intake

  • +4

Combine this with K2 (preferably one with both MK4 and MK7) - K2 + D3 helps calcium go into your bones/teeth rather than soft tissues (especially important if taking calcium supplements).

I use this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Life-Extension-Super-90-Softgel/dp… but any should do.

  • There was a deal previously on Vit D with 5000 iu version that works out to be cheaper
