Great airline. I went on their 787 from Vancouver to Brisbane. Service was good and staff very down to earth and hard working. I would rate them up with Dingapre Air. Transit in Vancouver is good as it’s not a very busy airport like Sydney. This is a great fare.

Really? Though I haven't actually flown with them, I constantly see them being trashed over social media. I suppose in the same way that Qantas has a bad rep with Aussies, Canadians hate on their national carrier too. Glad to hear you had a positive experience.

Oh please, when you check social media or some airline review websites, you will find not only Canadians complain about air canada.

        • One main factor is that AC is domiciled in Montreal and so it is a 'French canadian' airline. The Quebecois staff can across as being not as 'gentle' as your typical Canadian but I don't mind that. I mean I am not biased or anything but AC flights we have been on have had cabin crew that have a lot of visible tattoos on their arms and around their neck. I also think that a lot of Canadians think of Qantas as the 'fun' airline but to be honest we have only positive things to say about AC. Far better than any airline form the USA.

I'm originally from Canada and can confirm Canadians don't have much love for Air Canada. I would much sooner fly Qantas to Canada. I often do fly Air Canada though and it's fine but that's the best rating I can give it.

      • There's very little internal competition in Canada (Air Canada and Westjet, then Jazz to regional areas) so flights tend to be expensive and not particularly good.

That and, in my experience, Canadians seem to turn into jerks at airports and on planes. I don't know why this is. I lived there for ~6 years and flew a lot for work/travel, people always rush the gate to try get on the plane first, they're bitchy, there are always people rude to staff, I don't get it. It's like they hate airlines and airlines hate them.

I still head back to Canada regularly, after Air New Zealand screwed me during covid I always go Air Canada. It's always pretty good. Being so direct, not having to deal with LA airport and travelling basically to the other side of the planet for $1200 is a great price too.

Porter Airlines based out of Toronto (City) is excellent. Love that I can just walk into the CBD.

I constantly see them being trashed over social media.

You trust opinions on Social Media?

    • Their 777 from Sydney to Vancouver was pretty rough. The seat width was on the small size which wasn’t all to comfortable on a long haul flight.

      • And I have absolutely no desire to do it in 787. Dreamliner my @ss.

        • Their 787 are amazing. Wider seats and more leg room than Qantas.

You'd have to PAY me $1187 to fly Air Canada again. Even then I'd probably avoid.

Depending on your citizenship, you might need to get a Canada transit visa (for the return).

    • +1

While Australians are Visa-exempt to enter Canada by road, rail or sea, they need a 5 year eTA (C$7 / ~A$7.60) to board a flight to enter Canada by air, including a transit to/from the US.

  • How many of these are canned because the weather is bad?

    • I would guess zero.

    • I have regularly flown into/out of Canadian airports in Oct-Nov (including Eastern Canada and the Maritimes/NL) and aside from a couple of aborted landings resulting in fly arounds, never had an issue.

    • I spent three days stuck at Newark airport because of bad weather and this shitty airline. Worst customer experience ever. Once eventually on the flight, the experience was even worse. Never again.

    $1187?

    All I see is $1289….

    Where's Melbourne?

    • -1

      Too far from YVR.

    • +11

Bottom of Victoria, last I checked.

      • Ah yes, but where's Victoria?

        • +3

          In Canada, eh.

          • @odysseus: There is certainly a Victoria in Canada, BC to be precise. Nice little town, I mean it is a city, the capital of BC in fact, but has pleasant small town vibes.

    • Seems like they dropped the route during Covid, but have said they're still looking into resuming it depending on the receival of more aircraft, with Melbourne more a seasonal route for them.

    • Shrouded in cloud generally. Bottom right of Australia on the map, you will spot it on a good day.

  • A trip to NY is extremely costly.

    • Yeah I figure if you can afford to go there on holiday you might as well take a nicer airline. I prefer going AirNZ and landing in Texas, much nicer planes & more convenient to fly from IAH or DFW than stinking Vancouver.

      • Emirates for me. A380's all the way.

  • Is New York cold and windy in November?

    • Yes but generally not too terrible, you might get the odd light flurry of snow. Speaking from personal experience, still able to go for a run every morning in shorts and tshirt, but I do tend to overheat in long sleeves regardless of temperature. Of course the closer you get to December the higher the chance of a nasty Nor'easter swinging down.

    • -2

I heard that you should expect a lot of liberal tears in November…

  • I wish the fares to Canada were this cheap…. Kinda stinks that the fares to Vancouver or even Calgary are 400 bucks more at their cheapest price. It's Air Canada after all…..

  • +1

Can someone explain why the fare to New York is 1200 with a stop in Vancouver but if I want to go just to Vancouver its $2000? Is there something I'm missing to get cheaper flights to Calgary/Vancouver?

    • +1

Just standard airline ticketing/marketing procedures. Enjoy the dangerously addictive game of skiplagging!

      • If the overseas flight initially lands in Vancouver you could pick up your bags for the customs checks and then leave the airport. The issue if you would not be able to use the ticket coming home as it is a commencement of Newark unless you make your own way there which for Vancouver to Newark one way might be cheaper to buy yourself.

    • Can someone explain why the fare to New York is 1200 with a stop in Vancouver but if I want to go just to Vancouver its $2000?

Because some routes are more popular than others they can charge more for them, others less so so they subsidise certain legs to get bums on seats. Because ultimately selling a seat a small loss beats selling an empty seat. There is also an element of taking customers off your competitors on strategic routes.

  • OP I can't see the price listed. Lowest was 1200+
