  • $29.26 for 256GB but not as good as the 2 for $55.07 nor the $16.60 that lasted for only 20 minutes.

    • 2x256gb is not the same as 1x512gb. Someone may need 512gb for their security camera, so maybe compare apples with apples

      • Yeah, I thought the benefits of endurance reliability and size would be fairly self explanatory, I guess it's a bit niche still lol. Also, even if 256GB provides long enough archival I'd still rather risk a surprise rewrite degradation failure in say two years rather than in one year regardless of the duration desired to loop. The only way to achieve the same time to failure point odds with 2x256GB would be to alternate the two cards every other day and then throw them both out when one reaches failure.

      • It wasn't a comparison, just pointing out that the smaller size is back on sale for those that missed it last time as it's not reposted as a deal this time around.

  • 512gb bit over kill for dash cam

    • +1

Possibly, but there might be a circumstance where you want something from a couple of days ago or were parked at the time. Plus, with a 4 day running recording loop you'll obviously take a lot longer to rewrite the whole card so the card itself will survive longer than a smaller one of the same quality. Seems like double perks to me, but I'm no expert.

    • Depends on if you recording at 4k

  • Is this not good for a phone? Been waiting for a deal on 512gb..

    • Couldn’t hurt going with high endurance

    • +1

I’m holding out for Samsung evo plus 512gb under $50.

      • +2

The 512GB EVO Plus is currently $57.99 and the 512GB Pro Plus is $64.02

I speedtested my cards and found that even though the Endurance is only rated for 100/40 MB/sec reads/writes mine actually runs at around 90/83 MB/sec which compares quite well with my EVO Plus which is rated at 130/90 but runs at 95/63 or the Pro Plus which is rated at 160/120 but runs at 95/83

So my Endurance card rated at 40MB/sec writes - writes as fast as the Pro Plus rated at 120MB/sec - a 512GB Pro Ultimate (200/130 MB/sec) I'd ordered should arrive soon so I'll see how it compares

        • +1

You may be hitting the performance limits of your microSD to USB adapter.

          • @RedHab: Maybe - but it's the builtin reader in my M3 Macbook Pro

            • +1

@Remorhaz: Probably not then, it maxes out at 163MB/s

              • +1

@King Steuart: @King Steuart - hopefully good because that's the one I ordered (and I paid slightly more as well) :) (it comes from Amazon UK itself rather than a third party seller) - it arrives today or tomorrow apparently so will test it once it arrives

                • @Remorhaz: Cool I grabbed one, seems like a last minute UK Prime Day deal.

                  • +1

@King Steuart: @King Steuart @RedHab FYI my Samsung 512GB Pro Ultimate card just arrived and I did some speed tests

Note I'm testing using the nice little Samsung USB MicroSD Reader (USB-A unfortunately so I'm using a USB-C to USB-A adapter) that came with the Ultimate Microsd card - note it's not the MicroSD to SD adapter shown in the pic in the listing (which I have many of already)

With Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I got a read speed of 185MB/s and write of 140MB/sec (which is crazy fast for a v30 microsd)

Testing with Amorphous Disk Mark I'm getting sequential reads of 195MB/s and writes of 120MB/s

Note I suspect part of this increased speed is due to the Samsung reader - when I test using a Samsung MicroSD to SD adapter in the builtin SD slot in my M3 Macbook Pro I get speeds more like 90MB/s read and write (which may be a limitation of the Samsung MicroSD to SD adapter or the Mac's SD slot)

Update: Just did some research and it looks like the built in SDXC reader on the Macbook Pro is limited for UHS-I cards to ~90MB/sec (which fully matches what I'm seeing) and for UHS-II cards to ~250MB/sec

Retesting my Samsung 512GB Pro Plus card with the Samsung reader I get faster speeds with it too (150/125 MB/s - not as fast as Ultimate but still much better than using the internal SD reader in the mac). I'll retest my Evo Plus and Pro Endurance cards at some stage with the new reader

One thing to note - in the fast Samsung reader with a lot of activity (e.g. Amorphous's tests run for quite some time) the cards get quite hot

                    • @Remorhaz: Sounds like a winner then! Cheers for the efforts

                    • +1

@Remorhaz: Thanks for that info. It is fast.

Notebook check does benchmarks with German thoroughness:
                      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-MacBook-Pro-16-2023-M3-M…
Scroll down to the SD Card reader section. Mac's are much better than most PC's here.

Regarding the heat with writing, there's not much one can do. I folded some al-foil around mine when writing a lot to act as a dubious heatsink. Flash chips are normally OK up to around 95'C.

                      • +2

                        @RedHab: @RedHab yep, @King Steuart - I did a bit more research too

Apparently standard UHS-I uses a 104MB/s bus (SDR104) so that's the theoretical max speed they can go at anyway (which is why my tests (and most standard UHS-I SD card readers) generally peak around 90-95MB/sec)

However Sandisk added a proprietary extension (DDR200) to provide up to 200MB/sec (it achieves this by using the 208 MHz frequency of the standard SDR104 mode but using DDR transfers whilst using the same pins, etc) - and then a bunch of other manufacturers (e.g. Samsung (Pro Plus/Ultimate), Lexar (1066x series), Kingston (Canvas Go Plus), Transcend, Acer, MyMemory and Integral) also took it on board

However this extension is not officially part of the standard so not all SDXC card readers or SDXC cards or devices for that matter support it

Obviously the Mac built in reader doesn't, neither does my SanDisk SDDR-409 Extreme Pro UHS-II SD USB Type-C Reader (but there's a couple newer Sandisk readers which do), nor does my Sony MRW-E90 XQD 2.0 SD UHS-II Card Reader - but of course the Samsung reader which came with the Ultimate card does (which is handy)

I also retested the Ultimate card with Amorphous Disk Mark and got a read speed of 195MB/s! :)

I should have bought another one of these cards when it was $68 yesterday :(

  • anyone know what the biggest card a Blackvue 970x 2ch will take?
their doco seems to suggest 256gb but i'm not sure if that is because they only sell up to 256.?

    • +1

I've got a Samsung 512 in my Blackvue DR900, have had it for a few years now.

      • +1

awesome, thanks. will give this one a go then.
