A refurbished drive with no operating hours? Im not sure thats how this works. Of course, changing the SMART data to 0 days operation doesn't actually mean 0 days of operation.
0 hour operation is a bit of a shonky claim
Just wind your car odometre back from 200,000 to 2,000km and give it a vacuum. That's basically the extent of refurbishment thats gone on here.
the reviews tend to indicate these were bought by aws azure etc etc. as 'cold spares' but they got rid of 10tb drives as being too small in the mass upgrade and now have these unused drives sitting around doing nothing
Keep reading… most say they have scratching on sides indicating they were mounted. Some say drives ran hot, some say they were OK. Most say they were noisy. Might be a lucky dip.
How would these go as storage backup drives just on their own? Basically when I need to I usually just buy a pair of new external hdds (always in pairs so my linux isos have 2 copies) which was fine a couple of years ago as hdd prices kept falling but now it's becoming quite expensive so these look pretty tempting.
I don't have or need a NAS setup so I was thinking I could just get a 3.5" docking station to plug them into my pc as needed until full then they'd only get used at most a few times a year as I copy off stuff I want. Anyone with better knowledge of this type of hdd know if that'd work fine?
Get a RAID enclosure. Cheaper than NAS, quick setup and no maintenence. Bang drives in, set switch to raid 1 and turn on. Wait a while as drives will mirror. Now you have protection if one drive dies.
USB straight into your PC (or router if setup) to access.

Thanks but don't really want/need a raid either as as I said all my other hdds are proper external ones. I just copy the data to two hdds before deleting from my pc. These would be the only drives of this type I'd have so just wanted to know if they're be fine basically using them the same as I do my current externals via a hd enclosure or something.
You may need to initiate them for your OS. Consumer external HDD products are usually pre-formatted and prepared for compatibility but these may not be.
Methods vary depending on your OS and intended purpose but can be Googled.
You can use the enclosure without RAID if you need too.
