Expanding Storage on a Second-Hand PS5 Digital: Tips, Pros & Cons, and Game Recommendations

I recently picked up a second-hand PS5 digital edition, so I'm curious if there are any extra steps or things I should watch out for when expanding the storage on a used console. I've been searching for them around the $225.00 price, like these:

What are the pros and cons of using external storage compared to internal storage?
Also, which games are real storage hogs?
Are there any games you'd recommend, and some for kids aged 10 and under?

Thanks a lot for your help! Cheers!

You can't run PS5 games from external HDD, only PS4 games. Internal NVME is way faster.

Side note: you can store PS5 games on ext HDD, but wont play from it.

Overwatch is free. Very addictive and it's only about 50% toxic. It's a good primer in toxicity actually.

    • Try The First Descendant, its free game too, 0 toxic (unless you play as Freyna) and very addictive. Very kids friendly… ahem maybe.

As @Yummy pointed out, you need an internal M.2 SSD. Once installed it behaves almost the same as the main SSD. There are many articles of recommended SSDs for PS5 online. It needs to meet the minimal speed requirements and have a heatsink, which can come with the SSD or be purchased separately. I got a Samsung 980 pro that was on sale a couple of years ago and a heatsink from Amazon, but it is easier if you get one with the heatsink already.

I would aim for 2TB if you plan on keeping a library installed, as some games can be easily over a 100GB. I have 1TB and I still need to be removing some games after I finish them. But 1TB is good enough if you have good internet and don't mind having to redownload often.

As for games for kids there are plenty, but a good starting point is the included Astro's playroom and the upcoming Astro bot also looks good. Depends on what they like. Maybe sackboy? it can be played coop. I've seen kids enjoying the first levels of overcooked or fall guys but it can get tough quickly

    • I got this 4tb Lexar. It works well. Cheaper than Samsung.
