Recommend Me a DSL Modem Router

long story short. moved house while building. Rental has VDSL instead of FTTP so had to get a new router. Recently I had a need to monitor bandwidth usage of a few devices and was shocked to discover the Asus I bought is absolute garbage when it comes to traffic visibility. purchased a ASUS DSL-AC88U cheap and now regret it, previously was using an netgear gaming router.and a smart switch which combined gave me full visibility. ASUS seems to give you nothing but a shiny useless graph showing the bandwidth in use but no breakdown of device.

I could build a VM or chain the old gear together with the VDSL but that takes up room and is messy and just more shit to keep running, so last resort.

requirements

  • Cheapish as only need it for 12-18 months
  • MUST have capabilities to see some traffic analysis, IP address/bandwidth consumption etc.
  • DSL/VDSL support
  • modern enough to still be supported with firmware or a custom firmware.(The ASUS I got supports neither)
  • wifi

Assuming your Netgear router supports Ethernet wan, use bridge mode and use the Asus router purely as a modem.

    • yeah that was my first thought hence in my post "I could chain them" but both devices are large and in rental I have a small office and desk and already struggle for room for all the laptops and devices I need. I probably will do this on the weekend to resolve current issues but it definitely isn't something I want to leave in place for 12-18 months.

  • Telstra Smartmodems are a dime a dozen on FBMP/Ebay. just buy one of those. Will work fine. You can root the DJA0231 to have full control over the device https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9vxxl849

Any new modem/router all-in-one is at least $150. Grab a free to $50 Telstra smart modem gen 2 and bridge it to the Netgear router.

Does the DSL-AC88U not have the Traffic Analyzer - Statistic menu?

Nope the 88U has nothing but a useless traffic monitor that provides nothing of value, That traffic Analyzer would actually be sufficient if it was possible to put it on. I guess I will go the route of bridging. thanks

Bridging is the cheapest way to go. Asus do have a DSL-AX82U modem/router all-in-one but it's $380.

Is your new property getting FTTP?

yep new property is FTTP where I will put it all back through a patch panel and managed switch + router, hence reluctance to spend much for a temporary solution, will go down the bridging route for now. Thanks
