Have had mine for years and it's going strong. Obvs not as good as an air conditioner, but it does help a lot during the summer.

It does annoy me that there's no timer especially for a fan at this price. But I got a smart plug for it.

  • Had a 660 that lasted ~6-7 years before some of the speed buttons stopped working. It now only works in off or full speed (5 or 6), so doesn't get used as much. If anyone has tips on how to repair it, that'd be great! :P

The 660 would turn off if the power cut and came back on - anyone know if this one (being a speed dial instead of buttons) will come back on at the same speed? e.g. plugging it into a smart plug to control it via wifi?

    • Yes, as it is a speed dial, the fan will turn back on at the same speed.

      yes

  • I see the 533DC also on sale $175. Seems like a decent price after cashback. Been considering one to run on low to circulate heat down from the ceiling.

FYI I managed to open up my 533DC and retro fit a DC plug bypassing its transformer.
(And added a switch to pick between the power sources)
Then i use a USB-C-PD to barrel jack for 20V.

    And Tadaaa

A USB C PD powered vornado.
My aliexpress usb-c-pd to barrel jack is pretty cool. It'll pick 20v if available, otherwise falls back to lower voltages if not available. Like 15v then 12v etc.
The effect is that the max fan speed reduces but it still works.

      • impressive, mind sharing how long does it work with that pb? any tutorial?

          I have this powerbank
          https://www.amazon.com.au/INIU-20000mAh-Charging-Portable-Po…

And over the weekend it was at 91% when i started blasting my wet shoes in the shower - to dry them.
it got to 19% after 4hrs and 50minutes; and then I used it at medium speed to start and maintain a camp fire for maybe 30 minutes
And then to cool some chips at the dining table.

it was at 18% when it suddenly powered off.

so i estimate 5.5hours run time with that powerbank at the 100w out port (as that supports 20v PD) from 100% to power down.

          no tutorial needed really.

snip the wire, put a connector of your favorite kind on either end.
drill a hole for a barrel jack
solder some wires to your barrel jack, with your connector
drill a hole for a switch one which is ON-OFF-ON type
solder more wires to the switch with your connectors
put them all together, join the wires.

          Enjoy

i keep sending pics to vornado AU with all the non normal uses i do with my fan
          - drying shoes
          - drying clothes
          - cooling off airfrier food so kids can eat asap
          - cooling off food on the dining table
          - starting a camp fire
          - keeping balloons afloat to amuse kids
          - drying vacuum cleaner filter
          - blowing bubbles from a bubble wand

  • Inb4 someone says these are shit because it can’t replace a 450mm industrial fan.

However I think they are great for what they are. I did get the cheaper mistral dc fan last year just to compare - and for the money it was ok, but found myself using the 633dc more.

    • I'm waiting for some muppet to chime in saying that they've lived their entire lives with $10 kmart fans so cannot fathom why someone would ever buy anything else.

I got the Aldi (Stirling, I think) Air Circulator recently (last year?) when they had them. Seem to do a decent job, and much cheaper than the Vornado! Having said that, if the manual I found online is the correct one, the Stirling one does use almost twice the power…

        • Cheap can be fine too. It's just that these threads always have someone claiming that a kmart box fan is just as good 'coz dey moves da air so dey is all da same' without ever having tried one.

IMO the biggest difference between these 'air circulator' things is AC vs DC.
