  • Ok, so for someone who had played Pokemon go, and has nerd tendencies but no experience: where would one start with Pokemon?

    • -2

check FB marketplace or gumtree and buy bulks

    • +1

Collecting? Look at the card list for a set and see if it has the pokemon you're interested in and buy the individual booster packs or boxes like this. You can't really go wrong, unless you buy a starter deck/battle academy/etc which are play focused if you don't intend to.

      • Yes, I'd like to play, and collect. And my 9 year old is pretty keen to play as well.

        • +1

Get the battle academy set then, it's made for this situation in learning to play. The tcg app also has a tutorial to play.

After that it's as simple as just buying the cards/pack that interest you.

    • +1

Play on tcg live (official app). The tutorial ain't great and app can have issues at times. But matchmaking is fast and you get access to 8 pretty good decks at the start. Then you earn currency (not purchasable directly) as you play and can unlock other decks and cards.

If you want to go for meta decklist. Check limitless. They have proxy tools for you to print and make your proxy decks (but these are not legal in local or international tournaments)

If you want to get a real deck that is meta worthy, looking at $70-$150 per deck and most cost effective way is to get singles (I.e. purchase as individuals).

This is if you want to play the tcg. Otherwise, if its collection, people tend to buy booster box which is like 36 booster packs and many of those. Some go for "chase" cards which are the most valuable (usually top 10) from the series. There is a whole rabbit hole of grading to come with it and its not cheap. Or you can go for Master set which is attempting to get every card in a series. Collection is very expensive.

If you have any further questions. Happy to answer

      • Yeah I'd like to have a physical collection, as well as use some to play. What's required for a few people to play?

I've seen some boxes with like 100 odd cards, others with only like 36 or so.

        • +1

To play, you need a deck of 60 cards and only requirement is 1 basic pokemon.

Odd cards don't do well and not fun to play. You need a combination of pokemon, energy (resource) and trainer cards.

People tend to recommend starter decks but they are very boring and slow pace. I would only recommend it if you are trying to teach a kid.

In terms of difficulty, starting with easiest to more difficult (higher difficulty is more expensive but better longevity)

          Theme decks
          Battle deck
          League battle decks

You and your friend will need a deck each minimum.

If you are not too keen on official tournaments, the championship decks are official proxy decks which are quite fun to play.

Pokemon tcg is very straightforward to learn, as such, I would recommend go for higher difficulty for longevity.

          Pokemon tcg:
Draw a card during your turn
Resolve and perform all you want to do in your turn
          End turn with an attack.

When it's your opponent's turn, all you can do is audit. There is no trap cards or spells.

So to answer your question, what to do to get a few people to play? Get league battle deck (if you plan on competing in future) or championship decks (if you just want to play with friends)

I would personally avoid FB market place and gumtree - Lots of scams and fakes.

Been collecting the past 6 years, here are my 2 cents.
For sealed and singles, ebay is a good start since their prices follow market fluctuation and you just need to sort by price. Theres actually a set called Pokemon go (just google 'pokemon go box') which is going for pretty cheap - mostly because the art in the set is all CGI like in the game and most people hate it.

For OG 151, there is a set called … 151 (surprise!) that came out not too long ago. You can still get hold of some at RRP. Japanese version of it is at an all time low because of recent reprints - if you dont mind it being in Japanese i would recommend picking up a box of it for around $70-$90. Make sure the box is sealed as Japanese boxes guarantee at least 1 special card, individual packs are usually leftovers after people get the one pull.

if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, join Pokemon FB groups and tons of people are selling their cards cheap there.

      • I'll have a look at 151, but the Japanese might be difficult as a starter 😆

Depends on what your goal is. Do you want to play or collect? There is also invest but it's not something I care about so someone else can speak to that.

If play, would definitely start with the TCG app to see how it plays and if it aligns to your way of playing. It will also allow you to see what kind of deck you want to play. I'd even look up tournaments(https://events.pokemon.com/en-us/) and pre release events in your area to go and learn in person. The pre-release events are great because you get a pre made deck that is great for learning as everyone is at the same place, and lots of beginners go to them. They tend to pop up 2 weeks before a new main set releases.

If collecting. There are a few ways to go about it. Some people like to do Master Sets. Which is to choose a set and collect every variation (normal, reverse holos, holos, full arts, illustrated rares etc) of every card that can be pulled from a packet of that set. Or a Master Set Plus which also includes promo cards for that set.
Alternatively another popular option is to choose a pokemon you love and specifically collect that. Or to do a pokedex. Where you collect one card of every pokemon(highly recommend the Dex app on ios for this style of collecting as it can get messy quick without a good system in place.).
Then you can also start thinking of more unique ways to collect. Some people do things like only collecting Illustrated cards, or shiny cards, or in my instance. I played through every mainline game and I'm now collecting cards that align with my hall of fame from each game. Someone I know only collects PSA 9's of Ninetales. PSA being one of the grading companies. Someone else I know only collects cards with Ash and Misty on them.

      • Collection is more my thing, but I would also like to use them. I've got quite a decent Funko collection, so not new to collecting, just new to both TCG and Pokemon. I was already too old at the point it was taking off here 😆. Now that I've got young kids and they are interested I figure it might be a good time to try again.

        • +1

I was in a similar place, and started playing all the mainline games again to learn all the new pokemon. AS I had not played it since gen 2. Started collecting about 18 months ago and got back into it again. Might be a place to start. Then you can decide what your favourite pokemon are potentially.

  • How is it buying tcg cards from Amazon US? Only ever bought from Amazon AU… I’ve heard bad stories about products from the US being re sealed.. but then again Amazon’s return policy isn’t that bad 😜

    • I had some good experiences with newer sets like 151. They all came sealed. These sets being newer they would likely have plenty of sealed stock, but you would still run the risk of getting someones seconds…

I think older sets will have high chance of being resealed as stock is usually limited. I bought a lost origins etb a few weeks back and it was clearly resealed. Opened one to confirm, and it wasn't even the same set. Still waiting on the refund.

    • +2

I've bought a lot of 151 from the US store as it had plenty of stock vs zero here in AU, not had a problem once. I've read a lot of horror stories, but I just make sure it is both sold AND shipped from Amazon AU or US.

I saw someone selling Sun & Moon Cosmic Eclipse which is an older set in the AU sale, it was $40 a pack flagged as a Prime day deal, but was not sold by Amazon….so I avoided. I also just got 6 packs from Kmart at $9 a pack….I was not expecting to find such an old pack there!

Looks like the Twilight Masquerade is out of stock. It's showing as currently unavailable.

This set is half price if you missed it last time at Target: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CQ3JZPFX/
apply first time Prime member offer $20 further discount.

  • Pokemon TCG Paldea Adventure Chest Trading Card Game Squishy Toy/Sticker Packs $43.99 gone as well. Kmart have it for $49, BigW for $55.

    • still available, do you think it is worth to buy this set?

      • @T-man at $43.99 for 6 mixex set booster packs, isn't cheap - EB is currently selling individual booster packs for $5pp.. It is a cool item to keep sealed though.

The cheest comes with two "black star" promo cards. They aren't valuable at the moment ($5-10 each)… but you never know.

I think this is one of the promos: https://www.pricecharting.com/game/pokemon-promo/pikachu-88
