Upgrading iPhone 7

Looking to upgrade my iPhone 7 I’ve had for 8 years. Only ever had an Apple smartphone so wondering which model that is available new is the best value for money at the moment?

    Pixel 8?

    • +5

I love Pixel but I wouldn't recommend an operating system switch to someone that rarely upgrades phones and is used to iOS.

  • I’d say 13 Pro or 14 is the best value

    • I don't think it's possible to buy a brand new 13 Pro anymore?

  • Nokia 3310

    • The reboot has been surprisingly more popular than I thought it would be!

    I’m in the same situation

Respect. I admire you guys for being able to hold onto your phones for so long. 🫡

I just had a baby and need extra storage for photos and better camera.

Otherwise my iPhone 7 128gb from 2016 still works perfectly well for all apps that I use still for a while to go.

        • Just remembered my partner is still using iPhone 6 ;)

  • +8

can you wait 2 months till 16 series drops

    • +2

I’m surprised this was not the first answer.

    • +1

      Yes what’s another 2 months

      • Exactly, and exude new-model phone swagger like you did in 2017. Of course if you want to allocate less funds there are so many other options.

    • Id say wait for the 16 to drop and pick up a mildly cheaper base model 15 - no need to go for a pro etc. You have survived with a 7 for this long, i doubt camera quality and what chip it runs is a priority for you haha.

      • I upgraded from an 8plus to 15. I was expecting siri to be less crap and to be able to go more than a day without charging but i am disappointed. Camera and USB C is really the only difference i notice.

        • I feel that on a slightly lower level…I went from a x to 14.
I was severely underwhelmed at the lack of difference haha.

iPhone 15 Pro Max 1TB is a bargain at just under $3000

  • +1

Don't forget that all iPhones now are larger than the iPhone 7. If you like the form factor of the 7 and don't want to carry a large bulky phone the 13 Mini would be your best bet if you can find one.

    • +1

iPhone SE is the exact same form factor and would be a better option IMO, the 13 mini (and mini concept) was killed - though some resellers still have stock.

      • +1

Fair enough. The SE doesn't come in 256 gb, for longevity the 13 Mini beats it in that respect because it comes in 512 gb. I do much prefer Touch ID to Face ID though (still using my iPhone 8 mainly because of that).

  • iPhone 15 128GB $800 @ JB Hi-Fi after repaying $800 upon immediate cancellation of $99 plan

    • Thats a good deal, did that for my wifes phone a couple years back.
Edit: just read some comments, seems that loop hole is shut?

      • some seem to have had the upfront $99 refunded, whilst others haven’t - either way, probably still as cheap as it’s ever going to be, so i’d go for it :)

  • defile best value?
Do you use it just as a phone?

    • defile best value

      😲

      • That damn spelling checker has struck again I see - lol

  • +2

get a second iphone 7, glue them together ….BAM… iphone 14.

    your welcome

    • The funny thing is it would still be smaller than a Galaxy Fold lol

Haha, I want Apple, but I also want Value …

Just incase you missed it, apple value is an oxymoron!

    • +2

Ludicrous comment. Everyone knows iPhones are always priced higher but that doesn't mean they lack value. iPhones retain the highest resale value. And until recently iPhones supported their models with the latest OS updates the longest. Just look at how long OP held onto the iPhone 7. The Samsung/Google phone that came out at the same time as it has long become obsolete and have almost no resale value.

For the record, I don't have an iPhone. I prefer Pixels.

  • +1

I'd get a refurbed iPhone 12, and invest the difference in high yield bonds…

    • They're going for around $600, I think that's bad value considering it's almost 4 years old. Especially for OP since they keep their phones a very long time. A newer model would ensure that, I don't think the 12 will.

      • They're going for around $600

        Grade A. $489

        https://www.phonebot.com.au/iphone-12/apple-iphone-12-64gb-r…

iPhone 12 was the first model to support 5G

        • +1

I personally would not advise anyone to buy a 64GB model in 2024, especially for not $489.

Also Phonebot's site isn't as clean as Reebelo so I haven't been looking there. Reebelo have Grade A 128GB for $573 and 265GB for $615.

          • @Nillionaire: Then get the 128GB version for an extra $40

          • @Nillionaire:

Also Phonebot's site isn't as clean

I always buy from them in store, so i can check the phone…

Plus they have a 7 day change of mind policy for their refurbed phones…

            • @jv:

they have a 7 day change of mind policy

              I respect that

          • +1

@Nillionaire: Per @jv, Phonebot is a reseller, Reebelo is a marketplace. Phonebot's condition gradings I've found always to be accurate, marketplaces are cheap but I think you need to be not fussy about grading.

          • @Nillionaire: Memory depends on your use case. My 64GB iPhone has 20GB available so 128GB would have been a waste of money.

            • @sumyungguy: For $40 extra though, I'd get the 128GB just in case…

              • +1

@jv: Sure, less unloading of apps to do system updates; but the difference was $80 when new.

            • @sumyungguy: With increasing bloat ware that safety margin with 64GB becomes the same as when they sold 8GB or even 16Gb phones…..

  • Motorola G54 - lol

OK, in all seriousness, I would go for that iPhone 15 for $800 deal above if you're looking at not spending too much. Else wait for the iPhone 16 release as recommended further up.

  • +1

Whats wrong with the iPhone 7?

    • A number of my apps are no longer able to be updated aswell as not being able download apps I’m interested in. I think its got to do with being too old.

  • +1

iPhone SE 2022 (3rd gen). Same size, has home button, upgraded internals, including 5g, cheaper than other iPhones.

    • I have had an SE3 that I moved to from my iPhone 7, I have loved it - it was so nice keep the same form factor as the 7 and I’m personally one of those that loves having a home button lol.

I do fully plan to upgrade to the SE4 next year even though it will be bigger.

  • iPhone SE (2020) 256GB Red, Excellent Condition, New Battery $289
I got one from Greengadgets three weeks ago and I'm very pleased with it.
    https://shop.greengadgets.net.au/products/apple-iphone-se-20…
Stock comes and goes so you might have to wait for some to come in.
I know, it's not new, it's secondhand, but you can't argue about the value for money.

    • The 2022 version has 5g and other improvements, but costs more

  • i agree with others. I would wait for the next one to drop unless you get a good deal on an iPhone 14/15 in the meantime. I got an iPhone15 Pro when Telstra did there $300 off deal. I need a decent camera for my trip to Europe in September or I would've waited as well. I upgraded from an iPhone XS.

  • Is it still on the original battery?

  • I might be in the minority here, frugal vs cheap etc etc, but an iPhone 15 will be up to date, whilst allowing for USB C charging, which, IMO, is its best selling feature.

You had a 7 for 8 years, if you do the same with a 15 (once the 16 comes out), spend around a grand, for 8 years, were talking 35-40c a day, for what's considered a modern necessity.

Up to you, weigh up what features you want, but there are a few items I don't cheap out on, and every day items are one of them.
