this game is not yet complete

Massive understatement. It will never be completed. Good to see there’s some playable progress though, but no chance spending money on it.

They’ve blown through US$710,000,000 and still grifting with FOMO referral bonuses.

One of the biggest gaming scam out there one of the ship cost $2500, better buy x series.

      Scam Citizen

None of the comments on the game's progress really matter except one fact:

The feature that makes or breaks the game is server meshing, they are currently testing the feature right now.

Assuming the feature works as advertised, the game will be in a very playable state once they fix the bugs that cause death.

    • The game engine is rather unsuitable for what game they trying to build, hence they build a lot of customisation (for example server meshing) to fix this, but I doubt even that will make the game in a very playable state

      • +3

        This is an uninformed comment.

There is no game engine suitable for what they wanted to build. They have been the first to build a long long list of technologies that didn't exist.

Technically CryEngine might have been harder to develop with compared to Unreal based on what the average developer has expierience with, but we can't presume anything and lets remember that the license they have for CryEngine gives them a lot more control then the Unreal license would.

      • Unfortunately they don't have the budget to get the engine working, they need more money, buy more ships.

There are a ton of bugs that will detriment your experience and frustrate you. However, if you persevere through them or are lucky enough to avoid them, there are some implemented gameplay loops can give a fun gameplay experience for an hour or two at a time.

I really, really like that you seamlessly transition from walking around on a planet, to getting in a ship, to flying off planet, travelling through space, going to another planet, flying along the surface, landing anywhere on the planet you like and continuing your adventures there. No loading screens at any point, and during any of the above you could abort your travel and just fly (or even EVA) around wherever you currently are without restriction. Very, very few games do that.

    • +1

No loading screens is extremely rare / unheard of in any game … that almost makes it sound like its worthwhile to check it out

      • +4

I'll clarify - there's loading screens at two points: When you first load into the game session (of course), and technically there's one if you die, so that it can sort out your respawn. Outside of that, none that I've come across.

      • The other main one I can think of is Space Engineers which is a great game, but only multiplayer up to 20-30 players, Star Citizen is designed for a lot more as its an MMO.

You can plot a course to another planet in the system, start quantum travel, then get up from your seat and rearrange your inventory if you want. Lie on the bed (if your ship has one) or walk around the ship.

If you open up the starmap at any point during the trip you'll see the position of your ship as it moves through the system.

Once you're at your destination, you get back on your seat and continue flying the ship as before. You're never interrupted by a loading screen at any point in that trip.

        • You can also power off your ship mid quantum and it'll drop you almost immediately into wherever you happen to be in deep space. Power up the ship and fly around freely (albeit with nothing of interest around).

You can also open the doors to the outside during quantum travel, step out mid-warp, and be left stranded in space as your ship happily continues warping to its destination without you.

I really don't think these should be posted anymore. Sure it's free access to an otherwise paid game, but you will need to pay for it if you want to do more than just be cannon fodder for relentless nerds funding the property portfolio of the grifters who barely keep this game development project running.

    • Agreed 100%. Time to add a filter for "Cloud Imperium Games".

This is an excellent game and every day we get closer and closer to completion. I currently have in my armada -

    • The Star Cruiser 6X
    • Blackhole Bandit
    • Falcon Z1000
    • Legion 4

Yes my wife has left me but when I rule all of space, I don't think I'd remain single for very long ; - )

I just remortgaged my house to buy the super… duper … flying duckbill megatron. It took devs 40 minutes to create out but it's got 9 main lasers, 4 double-trouble rocket bays, an inside mcdonalds, and a massaging captains chair.

  • I’m assuming you get a ship with the purchase and you can grind cash for more. The 12 ships to try, what cost are they to buy?

Can anyone comment on how this game compares to Elite Dangerous?

Sorry being lazy, I really should just try the free event. Just no time!!

    • Elite Dangerous is a mostly single player game where you fly from point to point grinding credits so you can buy a better ship but do nothing useful with that better ship, there hasn't been any substantial content added to the game in the past 10 years since its release, just disapointing expansion packs.

The game design is also vastly different, its not really "in space" but rather a collection of maps\levels that are set in space and you have to travel and have a loading screen every time you want to travel somewhere. Even on the super rare occasion that someone wants to attack you while in super cruise, you have a loading screen and then you get randomly placed into a map together where you "duel" or you run away into another loading screen, where the other player can also enter a loading screen to then place you into another loading screen to go back to your "duel" map. You repeat this until someone gets bored.

I'll also add that Elite Dangerous doesn't even have real game servers, its a peer to peer game so its easy to cheat. Their servers only hold world and mission information.

Star Citizen is at least designed to be a real space MMO game, but they've yet to fully finish the server meshing that makes it fully possible.

      • Thank you for the info! I should have stated that I do have Elite but it’s been years since I played. I don’t have any of the newer DLC. So wondering if Star Citizen is worth a go.

Star Citizen allows grinding the same way? I’m just assuming there isn’t much finished content to visit. And it’s PvE and PvP, more like an MMO?

It certainly makes a lot of promises. A lot lol I’m guessing it’s still not a good time to jump in.

        • The best time to jump in is after they implement server meshing.

Star Citizen does allow you to grind the same way, but at the same time there's so much more to do and a lot more meaningful content.

        • From firsthand experience with engineering mats in Elite, having a mechanic where the most efficient way of gathering materials is to repeatedly log in and out of the game is where I draw the line, and for all its faults I haven't seen Star Citizen having that type of grind yet.

    • Grinding cash in game can net you some ships, but not all, some are limited release, some are only available by purchase with real money etc. There's plenty of videos about on youtube about how to make money in game. They do also wipe the servers, but real money ships remain on your account.

This game has been stuck in development for so long that even if it is ever released as 'complete' it's going to be so dated anyway.

  • Free is always good!

  • +3

Over 10 years with a budget of what is getting closer to one billion dollars.

I really hope they finish it, but at this rate I probably will be 50 before it comes out, if it comes out.

As I get older I play less and less games.. I probably won't even bother then.

There's not much excuse given the budget they have.

Time is NOT free, so I don't think spending time on a buggy tech demo is a good deal.

  • Disclaimer: a mate sunk too much (>10K) and was last seen pushing referrals everywhere.

With that I've objectively recall from years of this debacle of venture capital crypto funds mismanagement..

Bear with me - but it looks like you need to front up a bit of $$$ (into the $710m pool of CEO wages) to get what appears to be an hour or two of somewhat questionable fun(?) gameplay loop.

Alright, that's probably worth a look.. yeah yeah nah, why the sodding (profanity) is this on Ozb?
    Farm referrals elsewhere haha..

    • A few hours of gameplay? Maybe in 2017.

There's plenty of content to play… but again not worth it until server meshing in my opinion.

    • You can just play the free trial weeks every few months to see where it is. It works the same as a paid account and will keep your stuff (unless a wipe) between free events. You just cant login to the game outside of the events.

You can play it a lot more than a few hours, if you like the spaceship games and dont mind the frustration of half hour server crashes and desynch jank.
If you arent super into spaceship games then no point touching it, 100 games do FPS much better.

    Another Kickstarter disappointment.
