Anyone know the difference between the 2nd gen and 1st gen of the 4k max? I think I got the 1st gen when I got the 2x 4k max devices for $70 (think that was the deal)?

    • +1

      What's new with this generation?
-1.7 GHz processor and more than 25% more powerful vs. 1st Gen
-2GB memory- 33% more powerful vs 1st Gen
      - Wi-Fi 6 support for smoother streaming

      • 2nd gen 4k max wired lan keeps dropping out for me.
I think its a problem with the stick firmware, rather than the OTG adaptor or USB ethernet adapter.

I didn't notice the same problem with the 1st gen 4k max.

    • +4

The first gen was smoother for me. Second gen has more internal storage but seems buggier. Also the videos have lots of artefacts when things move fast.
Kind of wish I kept my 1st gen max

      • +5

        I'm waiting for Gen V

        • Waiting for Gen X, with V on each of the 4 sides.

      • +1

Try changing the framerate to 50Hz

      • I think you can manually set the frame.rate in them. Check your tv and experiment. You may find this improves it.

    • Main difference is more storage, and with having 2 of the 1st gen that experienced the boot loop issue, Amazon replaced it with the newer one which is better. I think the boot loop is caused when the storage becomes too full.

This or the Cube? Mmm… 🤔

    • Cube is much faster but still suffers the same rubbish UI of all the Fire* devices. Having an Ethernet port is nice though if you’re in the market for one, definitely not a bad shout for $109. Fire Sticks are noticeably less responsive in comparison.

      • +1

When streaming 4K quality (50+gig file sizes) movies thru Plex to my recently bought TCL C855, it buffers and stutters a whole lot making them unbearably to watch. I conclude that maybe the wifi and ethernet port on the TCL is not fast enough to handle high bandwidth files.

Is the Cube's fast enough? Any in the knows?

        • +2

Get a nvidia shield pro, the TCL just wouldn't be fast enough to process that.

The shield will fix all those dramas and be future proof.

          • +3

@adamshere: Actually the MediaTek Pantonic chip in TCL 2024 range is fast enough. But the Ethernet port on it is not (it’s only 10/100). If you connect a gigabit Ethernet dongle (albeit only runs at up to 480mbps if it’s a USB 2.0 port) or have a fast enough WiFi network, it will be able to handle it.

I tested 120mbps 8K HEVC footage on my C845 with WiFi or directly play from SSD both works fine. But buffers a lot with the built-in Ethernet.

10/100 built-in Ethernet is a plague on modern TV chipset, just like high-end TVs comes with only two HDMI 2.1 FRL ports, all thanks to MediaTek (except LG and Samsung who runs on their own chip thus no Android TV experience). The latter will change for most of 2025 range TVs as the latest chipset finally comes with 4x HDMI FRL ports, but likely still has slow Ethernet port.

        • Cube’s Ethernet port is 100 Mbps for some reason. If you want great local streaming I’d go either Apple TV Ethernet or Shield Pro. For me, the Apple TV is the best streamer all round, the shield slightly takes the edge if you need to play uncompressed ATMOS or TrueHD as for some reason Apple TV only supports lossy versions of these. I have both but 95% of the time use the Apple TV.

          • @j1nx: Wonder if using an external USB-C Ethernet adaptor would be faster. I'm doing that with Chromecast at the moment

        • I have the same issue with Chromecast With Google TV 4k version. It stutters alot and drops frames all the time.
I know it's not because of the network bandwidth because it doesn't buffer and I also checked the (wired Ethernet) network bandwidth with an app.

I'd have gotten the Nvidia shield if it wasn't that old. So still wondering if any fire device would do.

          • +3

@Schrodinger: Don't let the Shield Pro's age deter you. In my opinion it's miles better than any Fire device that are plagued with a terrible operating system. The only negative about the Shield Pro is that it does not support HLG, if that is of any consequence to you. I use my Shield Pro daily alongside my Apple TV (Shield Pro for IPTV, Apple TV for streaming).

        • When streaming 4K quality (50+gig file sizes) movies thru Plex to my recently bought TCL C855, it buffers and stutters a whole lot making them unbearably to watch.

I have recently picked up a C845 55" and find similar issues sometimes, seems to be mainly with DoVi files served off my Plex server. I did consider it was partly due to the server being in the next room over and the network going over a set of powerline adapters, in a house that's 40-50 years old (I figure the wiring is pretty average).

I do have a Shield (the tube shaped one) in a drawer somewhere, so I think I need to pull that out of storage.

          • @Morkai:

I do have a Shield (the tube shaped one) in a drawer somewhere, so I think I need to pull that out of storage.

Hey please let me know how you go once you do. Might buy a Shield if that solves the problem.

BTW Any files below 50gig streams flawlessly on the TCL.

        • +2

I bought a fire stick max the other day and found it was good but returned that, got the cube on sale and use it just for plex and it runs amazingly good over wifi 6e. Been watching movies over 50gb+ with trueHD dolby atmos 7.1 & hdr10+. looks & sounds good

          • @moonshine: Also dusted my Fire TV Stick 4K and tried streaming and it worked flawlessly. The homescreen is a whole lot better and brighter looking compared to the TCL homescreen too and the Dolby Atmos is simply sounding so heavenly.

In fact, so impressed with the Fire Stick that Isimply had to buy the Cube which is supposedly miles better than the Stick.

          • +1

@moonshine: +1 for the Cube - it is incredibly powerful. Same as you, I've been streaming 50GB+ Remux files etc and it can skip back and forth without lagging or crashing. It is fast and snappy, and for $109 or whatever, can't be beaten in terms of value. Yes, the home screen kinda sucks, there are ads, but that's why I use my Apple TV 4K for absolutely everything else. I would really recommend the Cube to anyone reading this, for 50% off…. and I own the Nvidia Shield Pro as well.

        • The cube runs anything smoothly

    • I have both the Nvidia Shield Pro and the Cube - and can say that the Cube is outstanding value. Yes, the homepage is shitty and full of ads. But that's the reason why I only use it for Stremio. I have an Apple TV 4K for absolutely everything else. But for Stremio… it works amazingly. Even on 50GB, 60GB, i.e. huge files, it can jump back and forth, over and over, without really lagging, let alone crashing. The Cube is powerful, let's just put it that way, and at $109 or whatever… outstanding value.

And it is far better than the Fire sticks. The ethernet is limited at 100mbps though, but on our wifi I'm getting 240mbps down and that seemingly is more than enough for those huge Remux files. I would get it, if I were you, truly, it is awesome. Naturally you can use it for Netflix, Binge etc too, but yeah, my only experience has been with Stremio (if you don't know what that is, read a guide on Reddit, your mind is about to be blown). The Shield Pro is great, but $300+ is a lot of money.

Anyone up for sharing ultimate pass if not using?

    • -3

Already sharing mine, but idk why you were downvoted :/

Note the month of Game Pass Ultimate is for new customers only

    • What about expired customers?

      • +15

        How are you still alive?

        • +1

          Just for voting purposes.

  • +2

Are these things still running on Android, or have they updated them to the new Amazon OS yet? Looking at grabbing one for Stremio if not.

    • +1

Yep wondering the same thing. Wondering if these would be good for stremio…

      • +2

These are great for Stremio and Syncler.

        • They're great for sideloading however the built-in launcher is mostly advertising (for way too much 18+ content as well btw) and Amazon locks down the Android settings pretty heavily so you won't be able to run a custom launcher or install other applications that use accessibility services.

    • I picked up a Max about 2 months ago. It had the Amazon Os. You just enable dev mode and pick up the Stremio apk via downloader. Didn’t seem to be to bothersome?

      • +2

They’re referring to Amazon’s rumoured plan to start shipping devices with their own, non-Android based Vega OS. Haven’t heard anything about it in over 6 months though (maybe I’m not looking hard enough)

    • It's FireOS, the AndroidTV fork. Runs Stremio just fine.

  • -1

how does this compare to the 2x(jbhifi)

Google TV 4k Deal that i have (the google os is kind ass ngl)

    Can i run linux? LOL

    • If you think Google TV is bad you are going to hate the fire stick. Google TV is the best there is atm

  • +2

This is too expensive. I paid around $50 for 2 last year.

    • Forgot to mention 4K max. Hopefully they’ll do a repeat

  • Have stremio on my LG TV but need ad-free YouTube. It's either a firestick or Google TV, just hoping prime day and OzBargain comments help me make that decision.

    • You can’t install smarttube on your lg tv?

    • +3

Yeah like Emilimu said, if you can root your LG you can install Youtube Ad-free (built in sponsorblock) quite easily. I've been using it for at least 2 years now and it's been great. You can install the homebrew channel following the instructions on here
No way to get Stremio app unless you use the web version on the browser afaik.

On the other hand, I use the Stremio app and Smarttube on my Google TV when I'm away from home, and it also works just fine.

      • +2

No way to get Stremio app unless you use the web version on the browser afaik.

Native Stremio app is now available on WebOS for LG CX up

        • Ahh I have C9. bummer.

      • Got ad-free YouTube through developer mode instead of root. I found the developer refresh is only needed after 1000h instead of 48h! Thank you for the above though.

        • Odd - I've never had to refresh at all.

    • +2
      • I could never get that working well for me. I was trying to get it working with my Apple TV. I might give it another go.

        • I found the auto discover client to not work very well, but manually adding clients worked 100%

          • +1

@bdl: Ahh that could be what I missed.
edit: just got it set up and its working well so far. thanks for the heads up!

            • +1

@theguyrules: @theguyrules - no problem, YouTube is soooo much better without ads

              • @bdl: For sure. I always use the built in app on my TV over the Apple TV cause of sponsor block.
Wish there was a way to do it on iPhones without a hacky app.

    • There's an ad-free YouTube available in the LG Homebrew app. Not as good as SmartTube but then again it saves you buying extra hardware.

  • +2

I wonder how long until jv starts telling you it’s part of another deal. Honestly I’ve given up arguing with him, him against a history teacher and still doesn’t listen. Not worth my time

    • +1

😂. Every useless comment jv makes adds more to his comment count

  • Which model can play game pass games without an xbox?

    • +1

4K and 4K Max (although some people have claimed they have sideloaded the .apk onto other FireOS devices with success, but look it up first)

      • +1

I have 1st gen of the 4k stick and downloaded the side app. It works just fine.

        • Did you need to download Mouse Toggle?

    • Does that actually work in Australia? There are claims the Xbox app isn’t available in Australia.

  • +3

Why do people like fire TV stick over Chromecast when former cannot cast videos/Stremio and its memory space to store Apps is quite limited. You can hardly have 7-8 Apps.

    • Same here.

    • Hulu USA works on mine

    • +3

Because casting isn't really necessary these days. Lots of app have inbuilt 'second-screen' functionality that doesn't rely on the protocol at all. FireTV devices have better codec support than current CCwGTC so if that's important to people and they dont' mind the UI I can see why they'd get them. As for storage, these have 16GB which is double the CCwGTV IIRC.

  • +1

Does anyone know how to side-load the new Kayo app to 4kmax? It worked with the previous version but not the recent upgrade. The Amzone app doesn't play 4k and stops after a couple of hours.

    • doesn't work anymore, also Foxtel/Hubbl have removed the apk. it requires Google services for the latest version.

looks like 2025 fire stick will have a better native app that has 4k kayo playback.

    • Is that a different app to the one on app store?

      • Yes, app on the amazon store is like version 1.2 vs google play store on Chromecast, which is like 2.4.2, has 4k playback, animations, QOL improvements etc.

  • I am just confused about which one to pick between the Fire Stick 4K and the Google 4K.
    Any inputs?

    • +1

I love my Firestick, but if you are willing to spend $50 go for Google. It’s more flexible and also built in chromecast.

      • where can you get a new Google cc for 50 ?

        • Chromcast 4k is for 75$.

          • +1

@Vink: I don’t know exactly when or how but keep your eyes on here. I have seen that at times. Or try marketplace

  • Just wondering can it screen mirror iOS natively?

    • Not possible as far as I know

  • Has anybody tried running Luna gaming here on these devices ?
    https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Luna-Controller/dp/B07P989QTJ

  • -1

I have a Sharp TV that has built-in android OS. The TV built-in is super slow so I use the Firestick 4K.

However, it's quite inconvenient whenever I turn on the TV. I use the Firestick remote to turn on the TV, but I have to wait for the built-in system to load the screen, and then wait for the Firestick to load its screen.

Is there any way to turn off the built-in system completely and use only the Firestick?

    Thanks

    • -1

      Get a new Dumb Tv

  • 4k Max - Great for retro gaming!

  • Has anyone managed to run Steam Link or similar on their 4k Firestick or Max?

    • Well xbox live is now available in the appstore (hence this deal, perhaps) -see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6j-XHXzTIc.

I'm fairly sure I've seen people run Moonlight client on them to connect to gaming rigs running Sunshine server.
